I've just begun to research into my ancestry (beyond immediate familial knowledge) and I came upon this site.....to see so many fellow Cryan's made my day!! all my life, I've never known any other Cryan's other than those in my vastly extended family, and to say the least, none of my friends have ever known another Cryan. Despite the hard time i have gotten over the years (hey meggie....are you CRYAN?) i am incredibly proud of my name, and my heritage. as i continue into my research of my branch of the Cryan family tree, I plan to use this board. I will greatly appreciate any help y'all can give me in the future!

Did you know that Cryan is not only an exclusively Irish name but that even within this tiny island the Cryan name is virtually confined to one of the smaler counties-- Sligo.
As a result of my research i have discovered that a large percentage of the Cryan population emigrated --mostly to the US during or immediatly following the Famine of 1845-47.
As a result almost every Cryan -on the planet - can trace their ancestry back to Co Sligo in the early 1800s.
I was born in the adjoining couty -- my late Dad from Sligo.
I know some of the family history and the geography of the Cryan home-base in Sligo. If intersted in the origin of our name/family --- I'M Cathal (Irish) Cryan -pronounced Cahal

Wow that is super interesting. My maternal Grandfather's name was Cryan. My guess is he immigrated in the late 1800s. He ended up in Hells Kitchen NYC where I find him on the 1920 census.
