Brigid Cryan, Boyle, Co. Roscommon
My paternal great great grandmother was Brigid Cryan. Brigid married Cormack Carroll on February 2, 1848 at the Boyle Parish (RC) in Co. Roscommon. Witnesses to their marriage were James Gallagher and Margaret Cryan. Brigid and Cormack had seven children: Brigid 1849-49; James, 1850-50; James 1851-1933; Margaret, 1853-1888; Jane, 1855-1932; Brigid, 1857-1935; and Winifred, 1862-1935. Baptismal sponsors for children are: Brigid, Michael Cryan and Johanna Carroll; James, James Brennan and Mary Mulrenan; James, Michael and Brigid Cryan; Margaret, John Cryne and Rose Keeny; Jane, Cormick Gallagher and Margaret Brennan; Brigid, Ned Guny and Catherine Rorke; and Winifred, James Cryan and Jane Mulrenan.
Jane Carroll was my great grandmother. The story has it that her parents sent her over to the States to break up a relationship with a British soldier. Jane came to Lowell, Mass. (possibly to stay with maternal relatives) where she met James Donovan.

Joan, do you know who your Brigid's parents were? My g-g-gmother Atty McDonough married John Cryan at Boyle in 1825; their first daughter Brigid Cryan was baptized at Taunaugh in 1826. I wonder if your Brigid is the same person? John Cryan died before 1848; Atty took her nine other children to America in June 1848. Atty's Brigid didn't come with. Could she be your Brigid, a newlywed who stayed with her husband? (I think we've talked about this on the Cryan-L mailing list.) -- all the best -- A. Riley

It is my belief that my gr gr grandmother, Brigid Cryan, was the daughter of Michael and Brigida (Fury) Cryan christened on October 9, 1822 in Boyle (RC). I also believe that my gr gr grandmother's relatives that immigrated to the States settled in Lowell, Massachusetts. Lowell is where my great grandmother, Jane (Carroll) Donovan, immigrated to from Boyle. Jane was the daughter of Cormack and Brigid (Cryan) Carroll of Garrow, Co. Roscommon.

Hi Joan,
We haven't talked in a very long time.
Went to Ireland, found a Bridget in St Aiden's cemetary in Monasteraden, could this be your relative? Can't place her in my Cryan family! Let me know,
Edna Fuller

If you ever find connections to those Brennan's listed as baptismal sponsors please let me know. I have Brennan's that were married in 1837 in Boyle and later immigrated to Lowell in 1848. I always wondered if my Thomas Brennan (b. 1814) was the son of Thomas Brennan and Maria Mulhern married in Boyle around 1809.

Re: Brigid Cryan, Boyle, Co. Roscommon
Hi Joan, After researching the Gray family from Boyle, I came across Margaret Cryan, born around 1830 to Michael and Bridget Cryan. Margaret married Peter Gray and settled in Lowell, with at least 12 children that I know of. If you would like to see my Gray tree, feel free to contact me. Pat
