In the 1870 census he was in St. Mary Parish, La. It list his age as 23. That would put him being born about 1857. There is also a James Cruce listed in the same census in Orlean Parish. I don't know any of his siblings or his parents as this is the first information I can find on him anywhere.

He married Amiee Edmonia Carlin, daughter of Delfort Carlin and Noemie Provost. In the descendants of Claude Provost he is listed as C. Cruce and in the 1870 census for St. Mary Parish he is listed as living with U. B. Carlin and as son-in-law. My father has always been told that the Cruce's (Cruse) were part Indian and part Spanish. My grandfather, Allison Cruce (son of James Amiee Cruce according to baptismal records in the Southwest Louisiana birth records for Franklin, St. Mary Parish, La.) certainly looked as if he was Spanish Indian.

James Cruce was living in Orange, Tx in 1931 when he shot himself. I have been to City Hall and they have no record of his death. My Dad's older sister remembers the day he shot himself and the name of the street he was living on in Orange, Tx. City Hall suggested he may not have been pronounced dead at his residence and may have even been taken to Beaumont, Tx. I haven't been to the records office in Beaumont, Tx yet.

Where did you find the name John Cruce?

John is my 3-great grandfather. He is found
on the 1850 Census Titus County, Texas #147 and
also the 1860 Census Red River County, Texas.
I will look more for James in my research and see
if I can find anything. I have the Cruce line
to the 1600's is all. I know that my family
has darker skin than usual, but I never heard
them talk about being part Indian. My linage
doesn't have any names that sound like it
could be Indian. Who knows? I'll let you know
if I find out anything else.
