I am looking for any information regarding the Croan family (also spelled Crone) who came to New York aboard the Constellation in 1850.

I have information on Crone/Croan families in the Liverpool area pre 1880's.
I have traced my Crone tree back to St Michael on Wyre Lancashire to the 1700's.
If you are interested email me

I would be interested but I must say my Croan line appears to have come from Ireland via Liverpool aboard the Constellation.
Thanks

Hi,
Do you have anything on Robert born circa 1765 in Ireland? He was married to Christina Smith in Frederick Co.,Maryland on 8 April 1788. Any info is appreciated.

I'm also looking to trace the geographic origins of the name, as part of my planning for a trip to Ireland in April 2010. I'm trying to work from both ends toward the middle, and am not getting far.
Can you tell me how you got to the Constellation in 1850? Does your lineage include an Oren H. Croan or a James Matt Croan?
Happy to correspond via e-mail if that's better for you.
Best,
M. Croan

Hello, Matt. The Constellation is a probability rather than concrete evidence. My ancestor came about that time from County Down and there was a John Crone of the right age on that ship at that time. You can find it on the Ships List online. It was in a book on Irish Famine Immigrants when I first came across it. It was not unknown for them to cross to Liverpool (where the Constellation sailed from) and to land in New York, taking the steamships up to Canada. I've looked all over for Croans...I know the frustration.
I don't know either of the names you mentioned. They haven't occurred in my family tree which is fairly complete until I try to get back to Ireland. What time period are you looking at?

Yes, I can tell you about James Matthew Croan. He was a brother to my great-great grandfather Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Croan. They were not from Ireland. This particular family was of German descent. James Matthew, known as Matt was the son of Stamen Croan and Malinda Reatherford/Retherford. I can give you more information on this family. Orin was a son of Matt's.
