when he arrived in USA and where?
|
My guess is that John arrived in the US in the 1920s or 1930s; and probably, in Pennsylvannia. He married Katherina Klobucar Carneluti in the mid-1930s. To my knowledge,he had two sisters, Mary and Anna, and 1 brother Frank. Mary lived in Arcata, Ca. John and Katherina lived, last, in Ontario, Ca.
Does this have any familiarity to you?

My grandfather's grandmother was Helen CRNIC, as it would be spelt approximately in Croatian. In English, we'd say CERNICH, both to pronounce it and probably to spell it. It's a name from northern Croatia, as I know it. At the turn of the century, that is, 1900, Austria controlled vast reaches of eastern Europe including Croatia. People from what is now Croatia usually identified themselves either as Croatians or Austrians. Grandpa's family was from Mrkopalj, which is near Fuzine, in the hills above the big seaport, Rijeka. His grandmother Helen, or Jelena, married George TOMICH, in Croatian, Juraji TOMIC. Their daughter who became Grandpa's mom was born in 1845. I'm wondering if your CRNIC is from that area too, and would be a relative. Please take the time to post to the board, if you think we might be connected. KLOBUCHAR is another name from that same part of Croatia.

Our family as well is from Mrkopalj! Our grandparents were born there: Mirko Crnich & Matilda Crnich. Their parents were: Franjo Crnic(1837) & Marija Kanjar (1846) and Antonius Crnic (1840) and Marija Mance (1843) I have a Jelena Crnic born in 1915 in my records. I am sure we must connect somewhere. Melonie, How very interesting to meet you. I do have some MANCE names on my trees too and perhaps we can continue to write, but off the board? My grandfather's grandmother, Helen or Jelena CRNIC or CERNICH would have been born around 1825. She married George TOMIC and that's just about all I know of her. I did discover recently that the Mrkopalj parish church has records going back to 1730 on some families. Maybe our family is one of them.

About the brother Frank...my grandfather, who I believe would be in his late 70s if he were still alive, was named Frank Crnic. He also lived in California, but I'm unsure where. I know the he eventually ended up in Palo Alto. Do you think this could be the same Frank Crnic?

Hi,
My mother's family is from Mrkopalj as well and we have CRNIC in our family. In fact my Aunt who still lives in Mrkopalj is married to Stanko Crnic.
Anyway, my Great Grandmother was Marija Crnic and she had two sisters, Ana and Tilda (Matilda) and two brothers, Stjepan and Blaz.
If any of these names come up in your history, I would be very pleased to hear from you.
Thanks

Melonie,
Can you tell me where Mrkopalj is located? My John or Johan is from the Ribinic area. He had one brother, Frank, and two sisters, Anna and Mary. Mary was married to a man whose first (or perhaps last) name was Anjelic. She last lived and died in Arcata, CA. Croatian given names are a bit unusual, as you probably know, as you have the Latin name entered into the records by the church. Then there is the family given name. And thirdly and not unusually, there maybe a nickname. My John was born in 1887. Does any of this line up with your data? Dick
