Re: Critchlow or Harvey - Needle in a Haystack?

Frankly it sounds like a bit of a tall story, not least because there was no such thing as "ID" at that time. Nor is it clear from the story why your ancestor would do such a thing, nor why no one queried it when he returned home. The quite extensive Boer War records at FMP reveal no Charles Critchlow as having served, let alone been a casualty.

What you need to do is research your family history back thoroughly, starting with yourself. Many family stories have at least a grain of truth in them and it is possible you may find some skeletons rattling around in the family closet (most family historians do!). You imply that recent generations of your family are not from the UK. Have you traced them back to their arrival in your country of residence? Is that the point at which the name change was supposed to have happened?

Critchlow or Harvey - Needle in a Haystack?

This is my first post in researching this, so I don't have a lot to go on just yet. The story goes that a soldier with the last name Harvey fought in the Boer War and was killed. His ID was switched by my ancestor Charles Critchlow, who carried on living with the surname Harvey for the rest of his life, and this is the last name I grew up with (I'm so proud). Some people visited my grandmother from England a number of years ago and told her all of this but she doesn't like to talk about it.

Where do I begin? How can I get started in verifying this story? Are there other places I should post this? Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

James Critchlow at Battle of Saratoga, Capt James Knox, Col. Daniel Morgan's Regiment

I have found the Morgan's Rifles payroll sheets which include James Critchlow. He is consistently being paid 6.66 dollars a month, as a private in Captain James Knox's Company of Col Daniel Morgan's Riflemen Regiment known as Morgan's Rifles.

The dates of pay coincide and overlap the time of the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. Message me if you are interested in specifics. The NARA records are on fold3.com which is an Ancestry owned website, but requires separate subscription. You can construct a web address from this set of payroll docs -- http colon slash slash www.fold3.com slash image slash 9688829 slash

One puzzle. William and James maintained they were at the Battle of Saratoga. I am finding David Critchlow named in each payroll as well. Since James' brother David was four at the time, I am left with the only David Critchlow I know of, James' father. Any other David Critchlows who could be military age?
I have been busy so I have not been on for a while. I am married to Robert Critchelow the son of William Walker Critchelow and Stella Crum Critchelow. I have never met Maxine other than as couple of times when Bob would see her at the store and that was before Sam died. I would love to be able to get more information on the Critchelow family if you know any. I had problems with Bill or Stella telling anything when they were still living. They acted like there was some big secret that they needed to keep. I do know that Bob is not biologically Bill and Stella. That is another story for another time. If you would be interested in getting together sometime in Decatur, I would meet you. I am busy on Monday's and Wednesday's though. Marie Critchelow
We have the same relatives, I am also looking up Adeline
that married James Harvey Tucker. The daughter Sarah Sallie Simmons' Tucker. Sallie had a child named Ida Francis who married Lazenby. I have it showing that Addeline and Adeline as around 12-17 yrs. younger than J. Harvy. I have one where she is with her husband, her daughter and it shows a grand child of hers named Mary Critchlow...my thought is that Sarah was not married to Tucker when she had Mary. Would like to know if you heard anymore. Adeline is my 3rd Great Grandmother.

so, 12 years later have you compiled all your grave headstone photos? I am a descendant down the Henry, James, James, David & Martha, James & Mary Leech, James & Sarah Likens, Jesse & Betsy, Sarah Anne Critchlow. Seems like many of you are still in the PA region. I am thinking I need to take a trip to the area this summer to get a handle on the virtual research. Are all of your findings online for viewing? Could someone local help in the planning of a route for visiting all the graves and sites related to the Critchlows? How about a gathering of Critchlow descendants?
John Critchlow b.1766 and Nancy Brown confusion resolved

John Critchlow, b. abt.1766 PA, d.1832 Bullitt Co., KY, was the son of William Critchlow and his wife Sarah. William, b.1740-1745 PA, d. abt.1826 Bullitt Co., KY, was a son of James Critchlow b. abt.1708, d. 16 Feb 1762 in PA.

John Critchlow married Nancy Brown on 5 Apr 1800 (Bond) in Bullitt Co., KY.
(Source: Darnell, Betty Rolwing, "Marriage Records of Bullitt County, Kentucky 1797-1825 (Bonds, Consents, Licenses, Minister's Returns, Registers)" p.8, John Critchlow and Nancy Brown. Bond: 5 Apr 1800, Jacob Horine [signed in German script]; Nancy Brown is over the age of twenty one and has no parents in this state, Jacob Horine, 5 Apr 1800).

Note: John Critchlow, the son of William and Sarah, who married Nancy Brown in 1800 in Bullitt Co., Kentucky is often confused with another John Critchlow. This other John Critchlow, who's wife was also named Nancy, was living in Ohio prior to 1820. (in the 1850 census his children born before 1820 are listed as being born in OH). He was in Mason Co., KY by 1820 (Census) and his family was living in Owen Co., KY by 1830 (Census). According to some researchers he died in Owen Co., KY in 1830 or 1833, however, no Critchlows were found in the probate records of Owen County. John's widow Nancy (b. 23 Mar 1776, d. 15 Mar 1864, Lawrence Co., IN. www.findagrave.com Memorial# 13872440) was listed in the 1840 census in Lawrence Co., IN. In the 1850 census she was listed in the household of her son Edwin L. Critchlow in Lawrence Co., IN. She and John had at least one child born before 1800 (John C. Critchlow b.14 Jan 1797) so she is certainly not the Nancy Brown who married John Critchlow in 1800. The authors of the book "Critchlow and Related Families" addressed John (b. abt.1766), the son of William, and this John Critchlow and wife Nancy stating "Whether this John Critchlow was the same as the John Critchlow who was born about 1766 and was the son of William Critchlow does not appear; however, he is so considered." This erroneous assumption has been repeated in many online family trees.

Some records of John Critchlow, son of William and Sarah:
The earliest record found of John Critchlow is in the tax list for 1799 in Bullitt County, KY. In the 1810 census John Critchlow has in his household one female age 26-45 (wife Nancy) and also three male children and three female children. In 1820 there is still a female in the houshold in the age range to be his wife, however, there are no children listed. In 1830 John is listed by himself. It appears that all of John and Nancy's children had died sometime between 1810 and 1820 and that Nancy died sometime between 1820 and 1830.

1810 U. S. Census, Bullitt Co., KY, p.176
John Crutchloe household, (2 males under 10), (1 male 10-15), (1 male 26-44, John), (3 fem. under 10), (1 fem. 26-44, Nancy).

1820 U.S. Census, Bullitt Co., KY, p.154.
John Crutchloe household, (2 males 45 and over), (1 fem. 45 and over).

1830 U. S. Census, Bullitt Co., KY, p.116.
John Cruchlow household, (1 male 60-70).

Bullitt Co., Kentucky Tax Lists
John is listed in the following years:
---1799 (first year listed in Bullitt Co.)
---1804
---No Critchlows in Bullitt Co. tax lists from 1805 untill 1811.
---1811-1831 (not listed in 1813, 1814, 1816, 1817, 1821)
---1831, 200 acres Knob Creek, (last year listed, no list for 1832)

Will of John Critchlow (spelled Crutchloe in will) of Bullitt County, Kentucky (W. Bk.B, p.323) 23 May 1832, 17 Sep 1832,
- Brother William Cruchlow, One dollar
- Sister Sarah Goble, One dollar
- Heirs of sister Agnes Irons dec'd, One dollar
- Heirs of sister Jane Rawlings deceased, One dollar
- Heirs of sister Elizabeth Johnson dec'd, One dollar
- Sister Nancy Moore the wife of John Moore of Bullitts lick all the rest and residue of
estate real and personal Consisting of two tracts of land on Knob Creek ....... And
all household and kitchen furniture and all debts and demands due and owing to me
and every species of personal property belonging to me to her the said Nancy
Moore and to her only use and is in no wise to be Considered to be the property of
her said husband John Moore but to be hers and hers only to be used by her and
disposed of as she may think proper . . . . (signed) John his X mark Crutchloe

After looking at all the records it becomes clear that there were two different John Critchlows who were roughly the same age who had wives named Nancy; John Critchlow and Nancy Brown of Bullitt Co., KY and John Critchlow and Nancy who's maiden name is unknown.

William Crichlow; Southampton County, VA; 1777-1820

Richard Crutchlow (Crichlow) was born in Southampton County about 1805 (according to the 1850 U.S. Census). He married Polly Smith about 1831 in Southampton County (based upon the age of their oldest child). Richard's father was named William Crichlow and was born in Southampton County (according to "Virginia Deaths and Burials Index, 1853-1917" from Ancestry.com under the listing for Richard Crichlow).

William married Polly Smith 13 Dec 1802 (according to the "Marriage Register of Southampton Co, VA, 1750-1853, page 654 of the Brantley Assoc. Digitized Records). This puts William's birth somewhere around 1772-1782?).

The Brantley Assoc. digitized records show five occurrences between 1805-1820 when William Crichlow witnessed legal documents or was shown owing money. He is shown on the 1820 U.S. Census for Southampton County. I found nothing about him after the date of the 1820 census. Neither William nor his son Richard are shown on the 1830 U.S. Census but Richard does appear on the 1840 census as Head of Household.

I am looking for more information about this William Crichlow such as: who were his parents and siblings?; when/where did he die? Any help is appreciated.

Nancy Brown married John Critchlow 5 Apr 1800 (Bond) in Bullitt Co., Kentucky. Bond states: Nancy Brown is over the age of twenty one and has no parents in this state, Jacob Horine, 5 Apr 1800. "Marriage Records of Bullitt County, Kentucky 1797-1825", (Bonds, Consents, Licenses, Ministers' Returns, Registers), p.8, by Betty Rolwing Darnell.

I had originally thought that this John Critchlow was John the son of William Critchlow (b. abt 1745-aft. 1820, son of James 1708-1762) and his wife Sarah. William and Sarah and their family resided in Bullitt Co., KY. My 2nd gr. grandmother, Nancy Critchlow, was the dau. of William and Sarah. She married my 2nd gr. grandfather John Moore in Bullitt Co. 28 Sep 1797.

John Critchlow, the son of William and Sarah, died in Bullitt Co., KY in 1832 (Will Bk.B, p.323). From the 1810 census it appears that John had a wife and six children in the household. In the 1820 census there were no children, and then in 1830 he was living by himself. If he had been married with children they must have all died early.

It seems certain that the John Critchlow who married Nancy Brown in Bullitt Co., KY is the John Critchlow who died in Owen Co., KY. I believe the two Johns were probably cousins.

I am trying to find out anything I can about Robert Critchlow born 1886 in Manchester. He emigrated to the USA and served in WW1 for the americans. Parents were Charles Crtichlow (DOB 1 April 1857) and Ada Rose HIlton (DOB 13 Sept 1857). Siblings: Ada Rose (DOB 2/4/1879), Charles Henry (18/5/1881), Ada Rose (14/12/1882), Polly (1884), Frederick (29/8/188) - my grandfather, Harold Percival (1891). All I have is a photo of him and a photo of his sisters and some very basic info. If anyone knows anything or knows where I can find anything can you let me know please. Thank you.

Hi, I live in Spain but was born and grew up in Manchester, Levenshulme, in England. I know very little about Robert. I have a few photographs and a newspaper cutting from when he retired from the army or airforce but nothing else. I never met my grandfather, Fred, Roberts brother. My mum, Jean Critchlow, was Freds daughter, her sister, my auntie was Greta Critchlow. He died just before I was born. Both my mum Jean and Auntie Greta have both passed away as well. My email address is wattspamela31@hotmail.com. If you can email me I will forward the information I have and would love to hear anything you know about Robert or the family. Best wishes Pam (Watts) (Nee Lord)

Hi Sharon,

I am a descendant of William Critchlow, son of James (1708). (William was my 6th Great Grandfather.) I’d be very interested to know what info you’ve collected on the Critchlows in Barbados. And I’m especially interested in the map that you mentioned in another posting. I imagine that’s not something easy to email or mail to me so if you just want to let me know where you got it maybe I can track it down on my own? I'll also gladly share any info I have on the Critchlows, if you're interested. I have a PDF file I could email you that shows how I descend from James. (I tried emailing you at the att.net address but got an error.)

Thanks so much for your helpl!

Beth Crutchleo (yup, there was even ANOTHER spelling change. I’d prefer Critchlow – so much easier for people to pronounce and spell!:>)
Cincinnati, OH

Thank you, Don. I'm probably confusing all the John Critchlow's. This one would be too young.

The Critchlow ancestor I'm searching for is one who likely was born in the 1750s or 1760s, father of Temperance Critchlow Litten, et al. Temperance was born in 1783.

I noted a number of Ancestry.com public member trees that list Temperance's parents as John (1766) & Nancy Brown Critchlow, with Nancy having been born in 1776. Hmmmm That would mean she was 7 years old when she had Temperance. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's confused. Nancy I think is living with (her son?) Edwin in the 1850 census of Lawrence Co., Indiana.

I'm pretty sure that Temperance had a sister named Nancy who is said to have been my husband's 4th great-grandmother, and wife of Michael Litten who was Joseph Litten's (Temperance's husband) brother. Michael Litten died before Oct 1834, and wife Nancy Critchlow Litten may have died before 1850 - at least I don't find her anywhere in the census. Michael & Nancy stayed in Lawrence Co., IN while Joseph & Temperance went to Wisconsin.

Thanks again for your reply.

My wife is a Crutchlow (changed from Critchlow around 1800). To help me research her maiden name I checked FamilyTreeDNA.com for a Critchlow/Crichlow/Crutchlow Y-DNA Project and found there isn't one. Have any Critchlow/Crichlow/Crutchlow males on this Board considered having a DNA test and starting a Surname Project? It seems to me it would help a lot of people get through brick walls in their research.
If Im Correct then my Critchlow surname can be traced back to 1066 AD in england as the Critchleys, later moving to Germany where the low (lov) was added. But my searches show the critchlows moving to Penn. in the 1860s. I would appreciate any insight or corrections to my research.

I had a friend who went to Barbados and spoke to the dean of the cathedral at that time. He was told that James Critchlow did indeed to to pennsylvania. He wanted to be buried in Barbados, so that is why there is no body in the pennsylvania grave.
