The Hillcoat Murders interest me because two of them were first cousins, once removed: Lucy Hillcoat, Frederick's second wife, and her sister Caroline Le Mare. Needless to say I did not know them. Another sister, Isabella, was visiting at the time but seemingly was not with them. Perhaps she was with her brothers, Richard and George, who had gone to Mexico about 1885. I shall be interested if anyone has information on these three siblings.

Cresap in New Orleans

I recently bought a photo album (mainly CDVs) from before 1865. There is a little card in the album that fell out and it evidently was there to identify a photo. The card says, "Miss M. Cresap, Corner of Chestnut & 3d New Orleans." Does this mean anything to anyone?

This album belonged to a member of the PIGMAN family. The photos are related to Margaret "Cecilia" Morris and Nathaniel Pigman who married and lived in Wheeling, WV.

Your research seems valid. So, I well use it at the point unless something else delivers'

I can provide strong evidence that Elizabeth was indeed the daughter of Thomas Cresap.

The Ohio State Archives holds a typed transcript of a 33-page letter written by Thomas Scott (Call # VFM 2599), one of the first supreme court justices of Ohio, wherein he discusses his family history in great detail. He wrote the letter to his children on 31 Oct 1851 on the occasion of his 79th birthday.

In the letter he relates that he was born at Oldtown, (present) Allegany County, Maryland, on 31 Oct 1772, the son of John Scott and Sarah Chenoweth. Thomas writes of his grandparents Thomas Scott and Susannah Watson and all their descendants known to him.

On pages 8 and 9 of the letter, he writes:

"My father's sister Elizabeth, intermarried with Mr. Nathaniel Parker. He owned a beautiful well-kept cultivated farm and mills, two or three miles above the town of Frankfort on Patterson's creek, in Hampshire County, Virginia. He was a man of more than ordinary industry, economy and enterprise, and owned considerable wealth. My aunt had three daughters and seven sons by him, namely, Susannah, Elizabeth and Polly, John, Thomas, Richard, Aaron, Robert[,] Isaac and Nathaniel. Susannah intermarried with Charles Buler. More than sixty years since they removed and settled at Maristick a few miles from Louisville Kentucky. They had several children, but are both now deceased. Neither the names nor the places of their descendants are to me known. Elizabeth intermarried with Col. Michael Collyer [sic] and John with Miss Sally Collier, grand-son and grand-daughter of old Col. Thomas Cresap. These two families many years since removed and settled in Shelby County, Kentucky. After the decease of my aunt, Mr. Parker with the residue of his sons and daughters, their families removed to the state of Tennessee, where he intermarried with the widow of Col. Bledsoe deceased, but report says they did not live happily together."

Hi Collier Cousins,

I've been researching in obscurity for some years now and have been through a lot of material trying to confirm the parentage of my ancestor Daniel Collier (b. 1764)

To address this thread's purpose...

I've got what I believe is pretty good substantiation that Isaac Collier was married to Elisabeth Cresap (daughter of Thomas Cresap of Old Town Maryland).

A 1760 Maryland land record exists which transfers a parcel of property belonging to Thomas Cresap to one Isaac Collier. Within said document Thomas Cresap makes the following statement:

"...To Have & to Hold the aforesaid Land and premises with the appurtenances and every Part and parcel thereof together with all the rights Priviledges Benefits ProFits and advantages here from arising or thereunto belonging unto him The said Isaac Collyer and Elisabeth his wife and to the male Ifsue of Her body Lawfully begotten by the said Isaac Collyer forever and to his And their proper use and behoof forever..." (my transcription from microfilmed original)

Sounds to me like this is the statement of a protective father looking out for the welfare of his youngest daughter and grandchildren.

The name of the parcel was "Harts Delight".
The thought of it warms mine!

Chris

There are reports that some of the men who joined Michael Cresap were from western Virginia (today's West Virginia).

When Cresap started the march towards Boston, he departed Oldtown, MD headed for Fredericktown, MD. The shortest distance between those towns would take Cresap through northern/western Virginia. So, this gives some degree of credence to those reports.

The list of Michael Cresap's men dated 7 Oct 1775 is not the Rifle's he led to Boston. That list is for those whom he commanded during the Dunmore campaign in 1774. I don't think there is a list of the group he led to Boston as the men joined the group as he was traveling through Maryland there was no enlistment if the accounts are correct. The best we can hope for is to collect any and all journal accounts and pension applications etc. and piece it together the best we can.

Hi Susan,

The information that's in "The History of the Cresaps" is:

Michael Cresap, Sr. married Mary Whitehead in 1764 in St. Paul's, Philadelphia, PA. Mary died in 1821 in Oldtown. They had 5 children. Mary also married (2) Col. David Rogers who was killed in battle, and (3) Rev. John J. Jacobs.

This Michael Cresap's nephew, Michael Cresap (son of Daniel) married Elizabeth Whitehead in 1773. They had 2 children. Elizabeth was a sister of Mary's. They are daughters of James and Mary (?) Whitehead.

If you find further documentation on this Whitehead line, would you please submit it to the Cresap Society? We'd love to have updates.

Hope this helps.

referring to the Whiteheads/Cresaps and Jacobs, would either of you have any records of the parents of Elizabeth? I'm from the Whitehead line of Benjamin in Hampshire County but have unsuccessful in tying him to Mary Whitehead who was married to both Michael Cresap and to John Jeremiah Jacob.. There were several Whitehead sisters that married into the Cresap family. Benj witnessed probate records along with Thomas Cresap regarding freeing of slaves for John Jacob... any help with this family would be appreciated.

The men of Captain Michael Cresap's Rifle company are included in the book "The Tenmile Country and its Pioneer Families: a Genealogical History of the Upper Monongahela Valley" by Howard L. Lecky. Lecky states this is "the full list of men who served under him [Cresap], a list which was filed with the National Archives, October 7, 1775, and is reported by Burgess in his "Virginia Soldiers of 1776." Lecky's book is available on microfiche through your Family History Center for a very small fee.
The soldiers were alphabetically listed and I copied the names up to and including Thomas Scott. If your surnames would be listed before Mr. Scott, I'll be happy to see if they're included.
E. Robson

I just wanted to say "Thank you" for posting the pictures, obituary and other info you had on the Pigman family in Wheeling on the web. Some of the information, such as the obituary, was new to us and very much appreciated. My 86 year old father, another Nathaniel Pigman, was very interested to see it, especially the information about Samuel Carpenter, who his grandfather was apparently named after. Thank you so much for sharing this.

Linda said:

I recently bought a photo album (mainly CDVs) from before 1865. There is a little card in the album that fell out and it evidently was there to identify a photo. The card says, "Miss M. Cresap, Corner of Chestnut & 3d New Orleans." Does this mean anything to anyone?

This album belonged to a member of the PIGMAN family. The photos are related to Margaret "Cecilia" Morris and Nathaniel Pigman who married and lived in Wheeling, WV.

Cheryl Replies:

I show a Mary Magdaline Cresap who married a Kleinpeter ca 1915; her mother was a Gauch. She was a younger daughter, so "Miss M. Cresap" would have been the proper terminology.

I have none of the other surnames in my data, but they could be collaterals of some sort; I keep only descendants and their spouses and sometimes the parents of the spouses in the searchable file.

Wheeling, of course, is on the navigable Ohio River which feeds easily into Big Easy.

Cheryl Singhal

Hi James,

Charles Cresap Weeks is one of a few mysteries still left in Thomas' will, at least for me. I am not sure of who he was, nor his relationship to Thomas. It was obviously a close one, given his middle name, although he may not be related by blood. I don't think he was a grandson. I think Thomas' will reads that he lists his grandchildren AND Charles Weeks. Thomas held property on his behalf as he wasn't of age, that he willed to him, and he also paid for some schooling for him. Thomas may have done this on behalf of Charles' father, whom I'm guessing might have died.

Sorry that's not a better answer for you. If you come across some proof, will you please post back?

Thanks.
Karen
