Hello Peter. I see that this is an old posting, and this is a long shot! I've just found the family of my gggrandmother Jane Cray. Jane was the second daughter of Peter Cray b1816 (a cabinet maker) who married Christian Adamson b1811, Oct 15 1830 at St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Scotland. Their first two daughters, Elizabeth Lawrie b1830 and our Jane b1832, were both born at Edinburgh, and then it appears that the family moved as the next 3 children, Christian (F)b 1835, Agnes b1838, and William Gibson Cray b1840 were all born at Glasgow Scotland. We are unsure when Jane came to Australia, but she married William Bassett in Melbourne in 1852. What interests me in your information that is posted is, that it was family 'folk-lore' that Jane came to Australia to find her father Peter's brother, William..does any of this fit into the senario you know of concerning your William Cray?
