The Samuel and Rachel (Van Sickle) Crate family is mentioned in the Van Sickle genealogy at Google Book, p. 136. I have not tried to prove all of the children, but I do know the date of birth of James V. S. Crate in the genealogy does match his date of birth in the 1900 census. There are also Crate marriage in the Hunterdon Co., NJ marriages at Ancestry.com. It might be the right James Crate who married Sarah Apgar in 1850, except that in 1850 he was enumerated (with no wife) in the Vancickle (sic) family in Tweksbury, Hunterdon, NJ (it is the right age to be James V.S. Crate).
In 1850 Samuel, Rachel, Andrew, Catherine, Harriet and Aaron are all living as a family in Readington, Hunterdon, NJ. Also in 1850 again in Tweksbury where James Crate was living is Anna Crate, age 84, living in the family of Nichlus and Dellila Apger (sic)(indexed spelling).
