Elizabeth Mulgrew is my great grandmother. The name is NOT Eliza in the 1880 census listing, but an abbreviation of Elizabeth. It is my understanding past down through my grandmother and mother that Elizabeth, my great grandmother, came to Philadelphia from Stewardstown/County Tyrone as a child. She was sent here because her parents James (I believe the first name is James, although not substatiated) Mulgrew and Elizabeth McKenna had contracted tuberculosis. James Mulgrew sent his young daughter Elizabeth to live with his sister, Ann Mulgrew and her husband Robert Cranston. The Cranston's had no children of their own, according to my mother, but raised my grandmother Elizabeth to adulthood. My mother informs me that my grandmother, Sarah referred to Ann Cranston(Ann Mulgrew maiden name) as "Auntie" Cranston and that the Cranston's had a big house. Robert came to Philadelphia shortly after the Catalpa incident ended. They were married after the Catalpa incident.
Interestingly, my grandmother Sarah Hughes (Daughter of Elizabeth Mulgrew ) marries a second cousin James Mulgrew,a Philadelphia Police officer. Thus my mother's maiden name is Anne Mulgrew.
Hope this helps.
