CENSUS RECORDS:
1820 Elizabeth Township, Lawrence Co. OH
shows MICHAEL BOWEN with his 1st wife; they had a family of 12: 6 male and 4 female. Who were these children?
I think one of them was SARAH BOWEN who married RICHARD MALONE, JR. They were married 6 Jan 1826, Lawrence Co. OH. They had my great-grandfather, MICHAEL MALONE who m. RHODA MILLER; 2nd CYNTHIA MILLER; 3RD WILSINA PROSE CAMPBELL SHAW. Children of RICHARD MALONE, JR. & SARAH (BOWEN) MALONE:
1. Michael Malone
2. Leander Malone
3. Hugh Malone
4. William Malone
5. Samuel Malone
6. John Malone
7. Daniel Malone
8. Richard Malone
I have found death certificates for most of these children, and parents listed were RICHARD MALONE & SARAH (BOWEN) MALONE. Many of these children lived in Vinton County, OH.
Another child of MICHAEL BOWEN & 1st wife was MICHAEL L. BOWEN:
I only know of MICHAEL L. BOWEN'S child ESTHER BOWEN. My mother called her EASTER.
In the 1900 Lawrence Co. Ohio Decatur Township, she is listed as
EASTER BOWEN b. Jul. 1831 age 68 and Single. Address is DryRidge, Lawrence Co., OH.
In the 1920 census, Elizabeth Township, east half Lawrence Co. OH, she is listed as being on Wolf's Hollow. That was off Cannon's Creek Rd. The Bowen Cemetery is on a hill at the end of that road. WILSON BOWEN is buried there. He was a son of MICHAEL L. BOWEN and a brother to EASTER BOWEN.
EASTER BOWEN d. 23 June 1924, Coal Grove, Lawrence Co., OH at the age of 91. She was b. 7 May 1833. I believe she was in the old folk's home and buried in their cemetery. It was at times referred to as the Infirmary.
Note from my mother - NELLIE (MALONE) DILLON:
Her father, DANIEL E. MALONE, son of MICHAEL & RHODA (MILLER) MALONE, told Nellie about a time when he had gone to Ironton from his home on Slab Fork Rd. When he came back home he came out Cannon's Creek Rd. and turned up Wolf's Hollow. He stopped at EASTER BOWEN'S home to get a drink and to water his horses. EASTER was glad to see him. She said, "Come in and sit a spell, Mr. Malone; If Lawrence County was a bull, this would be the tail end of him." She was referring to her place. Nellie said that Easter was Daniel's cousin.
.
MICHAEL BOWEN & 1ST WIFE had
MICHAEL L. BOWEN who m. ELIZABETH DELAWDER AND 2ND ELIZABETH JAYNES.
Their children were
Easter, Anna, William, Katherine, John, Wilson, Abram, Thomas, Ellen
Another daughter of MICHAEL & 1ST WIFE could have been ANN LIZA BOWEN who at times went by the last name of MALONE as she lived with SARAH & RICHARD MALONE, JR. She married DANIEL CLARKSON 5 Sep 1832
In the 1850 census, Symmes Township, Lawrence County, OH. SARAH (uses name of Sally) was living with Hugh, William, Richard. Her son MICHAEL MALONE was living next door; Ann Liza lived near by. It is believed that SARAH'S husband RICHARD MALONE, JR. died around 1849.
As I have already mentioned I believe another of MICHAEL & 1st wife's children was MICHAEL L. BOWEN. There are two marriages for him. They are MICHAEL BOWEN & ELIZABETH DELAWDER m. 25 Aug 1824; Another marriage is MICHAEL BOWEN & ELIZABETH JAYNES m. 2 Nov. 1825 In the census records for MICHAEL L. BOWEN, the name used for wives is Elizabeth. I always thought his wife was a Delawder. Upon further research I now believe that Elizabeth Delawder was his first wife and Elizabeth Jaynes was his 2nd wife.
DANIEL B. BOWEN who m. MARY DOTSON, may have been another son of MICHAEL BOWEN & 1ST WIFE. Harriet Brown is working on this one.
Most of the marriages listed in the Lawrence County Marriage Book 1,2,3 are JOEL BOWEN'S children:
1. Sally Bowen & Joseph Drouilliard 31 Aug. 1820
2. JOHN BOWEN & MALINDA MOORE 6 Nov 1825
3. COLUMBUS BOWEN & HANNAH CHAPLIN 3 Oct 1830
4. ELIZABETH BOWEN & THOMAS BAY 30 Jan 1832
5. MISSOURI BOWEN & STEPHEN HOLCOMB 20 Mar 1834
6. LUCRETIA BOWEN & LEWIS E. CLONNINGER 11 Feb 1836
7. ANTHONY W. BOWEN & MAHALIA SINGER 13 May 1840
There are some BOWEN marriages in the 1st marriage book of Gallia Co. OH. Most of them are JOEL BOWEN'S children.
ANNA CRANK was m. 1st to JOSEPH CRANK, 1792 in Ohio.
She was ANNA MASTERS b. 1770, Augusta, Virginia; d. Jackson, MO 1864.
Their children were:
Nathaniel, Mary, Elizabeth, Phoebe, Sylvester, Joseph, Enoch, and Alfred. JOSEPH CRANK d. 1824 in Lawrence County, Ohio.
After MICHAEL BOWEN died, his widow applied for a land patent of 160 acres, S36, T35N, R29W. Issued Dec. 10, 1859 to Anna Bowen in Vernon County, Missouri. It reads: "Warrant No. 20.614 for 160 acres, in favor of Anna Bowen, widow of Michael Bowen, Private, Revoluntionary War, granted to Anna Bowen and to her heirs." Who were these heirs? Crank children or Michael's children?
There is a Bowen Cemetery in Vinton County, Ohio. People buried there seem to be descendants of a JOHN BOWEN. I do not know how they connect to MICHAEL BOWEN--if at all.
More as I find information, I hope.
