Mary Sue Rakes Crabill,
83, of Toms Brook, passed
away surrounded by her
family on Tuesday, April
17, 2012. The funeral will
be held Saturday, April 21,
at 3 p.m. at the Dellinger
Funeral Home in
Woodstock. Reverend
Dianna Horton will
officiate. Burial will follow
in Sunset View Memorial
Gardens in Woodstock.
Mrs. Crabill was born
January 31, 1929 in Henry,
Virginia daughter of the
late Wilton and Ethel
Rakes. She attended
Franklin County Public
Schools. Her first job was
working for Eddie and
Naomi Wilkerson. Mary
moved to the Valley with
the Wilkerson’s to open
the Valley Diner. She met
Eugene and they were
married on February 8,
1952. Mary and Gene
worked side by side when
they began Crabill’s Meats
in 1962 for more than 40
years. Mary’s greatest love
was her husband and
children. She was a member
of St. Peter’s Lutheran
Church in Toms Brook
and was involved with Girl
Scouts and many of her
children’s activities. She
was preceded in death by
her husband of 57 years,
Eugene Crabill and
siblings, James Rakes,
William Rakes, Charles
Rakes, Frances Peer, Cecil
Rakes, Everette Rakes and
Elmer Rakes.
Mary is survived by
four children, Phyllis
Hamilton and husband
Chris of Harrisonburg,
Phillip Crabill and wife
Donna of Woodstock,
Karen Condon and
husband Titus of Toms
Brook and Larry Crabill
and wife Sandi of Toms
Brook; one sister, Carol
Ballard of Martinsville; two
brothers, Doug Rakes of
High Point, NC and Pete
Rakes of Collinsville; six
grandchildren, David
Hamilton, Lauren Hamilton
Drayer, Kimberly Crabill
Lowden, Nicholas Crabill,
Kristin Crabill Hefren and
Adam Crabill and five great
grandchildren, Savannah
Hefren, Jackson Drayer,
Blayze Henry, Ryder
Crabill and Ella Hefren.
Pallbearers will be
David Hamilton, Adam
Crabill, Nick Crabill, Titus
Condon, Lee Brown and
Jeff Peer.
The family will receive
friends Friday from 6-8
p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the
family request that memorial
donations be made to St.
Peter’s Lutheran Church
or the Toms Brook Fire
Department.
