crable & crabill, are we the same family??
I am descended from Crables in Indiana and I have been doing a lot of research lately and I seem to find that the name shifts from Crable to Crabill depending on who does the writing. I was wondering if anyone knows if the two families might have a common ancestry? I have also seen many other name swaps and variations, and have heard of the Krahenbuhl?? story somewhat. Anyone have any thoughts or info on this??

Re: crable & crabill, are we the same family??
I'm also from Indiana...family based in lewis, indiana south of terre haute.
as I understand it we are connected. Crabill, Grabill, Crable, Crabill, Krebil....all from the same family in Prussia. I have sent the old hessian name as Krebil/Kreble.
My "Old Prussian" was saved by a doctor with George Washinton. When Washington surprrised the Prussian unit when he crossed the Deleware that famous night guess who was Officer of the Guard...Edrich Krebil, sober and putting up a fight. Wounded in the shoulder (lost the arm), he was going to be treated due to he being a member of a most hated group of mercenary soldiers (Prussians) Noel LeClerc treated him saving his life. So if there is "Noel" somewhere in your family group we are at least somewhat related. Been a Noel in my family ever since somewhere among the boys. Noel David Crabill

Re: crable & crabill, are we the same family??
I am a Crabill researer with an extensive collection of data on this family name. I have found that the Indiana Crabill and Crable families are definitely related. I will be happy to provide anyone with information on how the two families are related once you provide me with the names of your grandparents and/or great grandparents.

Re: crable & crabill, are we the same family??
I have been searching the Crables for several years, but have reached a stumbling block with greatgrandfather/gggfather in Kentucky. My grandfather John Burke Crable, b. 1899/Tx; m. Willie Alice Duncan; GGF James Marion Crable, b. Aug 1844 in Kentucky ??, married Martha Lawrence Craig in TX. James M's father John m. Mary Musick in Kentucy (no documentation on this, just word of mouth from Aunt who has since passed away, age 104).
Any information about these Crables would be appreciated. I thought John's father might have come from Indiana/Pa but have nothing to support this.

Re: crable & crabill, are we the same family??
Yes, this is what I have found in my research. Actually, there are TONS of different variations including Grable as well. I have disovered that the Krahenbuhls (again, that's just one of the "root" names I have come across) were originally German, but were kicked out of Germany after the Protestant Reformation for believing in adult baptism. Apparently, this what considered very radical and followers of this idea became known as Anabaptists. So they ended up in Switzerland, and many eventually emigrated to the US. And here we are today! Crabill (Crable, Kraybill, etc..) is associalted with the Mennonite and Amish religion/culture. Funny, I am a Catholic!!! Hope this helps:):)

Re: crable & crabill, are we the same family??
There is a good possibility that thru the years the name got spelled wrong just once on a birth certificate & from that date the spelling has been different. That is what happened with my father's last name 90 somthing yrs ago. The trouble with it is that it makes it that much harder to trace your line, if you can locate when & if the name change took place, than you have a starting point. Good luck.

Re: crable & crabill, are we the same family??
I too have found several variations on the spelling of the Crabill name. We all seem to originate from Krahenbuhl in either Switzerland from what I have found. Theres a book called "The Crabills: How we came to be" by Pat Crabill its a wonderful source of info!

Re: crable & crabill, are we the same family??
I am looking for Margaret Crable, b. 8 Apr 1821 in Blackville, Jefferson Co., PA. She married Arthur Pratt on 30 Mar 1845, presumably in PA, and died in Tama Co., IA. (They did live in Fayette Co., PA for a while.) She was buried in the Buckingham Cemetery, Perry Twp., Tama Co., IA.
I have been researching this surname for many years, and have a few questions, regarding it. On the 1880 US Census, there were some Crables that were grandchildren, who were living with the Daugherty's. I am wondering if I'm related to this family, as they are listed as "Black" origin. As far as I know, there are only "Whites" in my heritage.
It would be very interesting if I actually have some "Black" heritage! PLEASE, do not misunderstand me. I am not prejudiced--there are many, many black people who I have admired over the years--I have read biographies of Booker T. Washington and Harriet Beecher Stow, for example. The US is honored to have many black citizens!!

Re: crable & crabill, are we the same family??
Hello. I have found the same thing. My 5th g grandmother was Mary Crable also spelled Crabill on certain documents. We have been trying to find her ancestry for years with no luck. She was born March 10th 1810 somewhere in Ohio or Virginia and married Daniel Rhodes in Ross County or Pickaway county, Ohio around 1837 and moved to Indiana with her husband. They had a daughter Amanda Rhodes who is my 4th great grandmother. The changes and variant spellings makes it almost impossible to know if our research is correct or if we are looking up the wrong lines. I am also using my 23andMe DNA analysis to try to pair up related surnames through my DNA. If anybody knows anything about Mary and Daniel, my family and I would be very grateful. My email address is: rondaweilbaker@live.comThank you. Ronda
