Hello, I am my family's genealogist/historian. I just discovered the 11 or more Craber children, the last of whom were born in Eastern Oregon. Original last name was KROEBER, and I have discovered about 8 variations on the spelling, until about 1885 when they began using the CRABER spelling.
The following children (or most of them) were descended my ancestor and her first husband Herman Kroeber who died on his way home from the Civil War. He was born in "Prussia". We have family history on the great-great grandmother back centuries.
Parents: Eugene and Mary Kroeber/Craber Children/possible children: Olive Craber, b. abt 1882 Albert Craber, b. abt 1883 (lived in Washington) Jessie Craber, b. abt 1884 Edwin Craber, b. abt 1889 (married Maude Rice) Ralph J. Craber, b. abt 1892 Francis (male), b. abt 1893 Bessie, b. December 22, 1896 John E. or E. John, b. abt 1901 Cyrus, b. abt 1902 James, b. 1903 David, b. abt 1904 Sylvester E. (birthdate unknown--haven't tied name directly to Eugene and Mary

Since posting my original message, I have corresponded with some Oregon-Washington Crabers.
In researching, I learned that Sylvester E. is Sylvester EUGENE, the father of the children listed in my original message.
Have Herman KROEBER's Civil War pension record. He served Illinois in the 8th Cavalry and died at what is now a Veterans hospital in St. Louis, 2 days before he was to be discharged after the Civil War ended.

Allyson, is there any record of your family having been in Virginia about 1830 to 1870? My paternal great grandmother was Emma Craber Beard, daughter of Jesse Craber, born in either Henrico or New Kent county, Va. about 1840, married in Staunton, Augusta County Virginia, where she died in 1877. I haven't been able to trace Jesse. Does he fit on your tree?

I haven't traced it that far back; I haven't tried to locate any of Herman Kroeber/Craber's siblings or ancestors. Ancestors would have been in Prussia/Germany. They didn't change the spelling to Craber until around 1880-1885. I will keep your ancestor/relative in mind in my research and will post a message when I find more about his history. Sorry I couldn't help.

Thanks for your quick response and for keeping us in mind. Linda

My father has a picture of Herman in his civil war uniform. It's a large photo in an oval frame. My great grandfather was Edward (John, I think); his kids were Harold, Dallas, Gordon, and Creth. Harold died years ago, Gordon died last year, Dallas died earlier this month at 97, and Creth is still going strong in her mid-90s.

Hi, Russ. Yes, we're "cousins". I think it was your father who sent me a copy of the photo; I identified who it was. Herman's widow Fanny Barnes Kroeber (later changed spelling to Craber) Bates was my great-great grandmother (I'm descended from her son with her 2nd husband). I live in western Oregon and do the genealogy for my family. An Eastern Oregon cousin (from another branch of the family) sent me Dallas's obituary. I had an Uncle Dallas too. Longevity runs in the Barnes family. Fanny lived to be in her 90's, as did one of her sons. Herman died on his way back home after the war (may have been a POW) and is buried in St. Louis, MO at Ft? Jefferson. I have the Civil War pension records.

Hi Allyson,
Do you know where in Prussia that Herman Kroeber was born? Do you know any of Herman's ancestry? I am trying to connect the entire Kroeber family in the US through their German ancestry. Herman could possibly be from the Kröber family originating in Winningen, Rhineland with Anton Kröber (born abt 1540; also known as Tönges, a variant of Anton).
Thanks, Jim
