Hi Russ, Many thanks for your response and I can understand the short time lag, as I have been busy over the past few years as well.
My great grandparents, Henry and Sarah Craber came to Australia in 1878 (my g-grandfather's sister Sarah Craber came the following year) My grandfather Henry was born in 1880. We can understand the musings you had on the way the name is pronounced. That must be our lesson of patience in this lifetime, such that for me when my marriage broke up and I decided to take another name I went back on my paternal grandmothers ancestors to pick a surname I felt comfortable with, because sure as hell I wasn't going back to Craber - I had had enough ribbing at school to last for the rest of this lifetime.
If you would like to contact directly please email me on
mmckone@vtown.com.au. I have forwarded the link to my brother Graham Craber and you can contact him on E-mail Address:
gcraber@hn.ozemail.com.auThere is only one family of Crabers in Australia and my brother at this stage has a daughter, so the family name will be continued probably only with my male cousins who I believe have sons.
I would be very interested in any family history, especially when your family went to America and where from. I did find a Craber going to America from what would have been Prussia in the late 1600's, but have done no work on that field. I know my family were in England from at least 1700 onwards. My grandfather used to say they were orginally from France, but I don't know whether I would trust that information or not.
I also believe there was a Jewish connection to the family (which came through in looks in my father's sister), but from the time they came to Australia at least the family have been Church of England.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Mheg
