We are Crabbs, from MD, and there was quite a gathering of Crabbs living in the Taneytown, MD area which goes back to the 1800s. I remember an Ann Frances living
there in the 1940s. I know of no others
except that some have moved to PA, where
I live, near Lancaster. The Crabbs book
says that they are in MD, OH, Indiana,
Utah and a couple in Wash. state (Seattle area). There are very few of them.
My son Joseph lives in WV. Has anyone tracked
the name back to its roots outside of America? From where and when they came over, etc.?

Crabbs in Maryland ?

George, I am most interested in your Crabbs in Md as my Crabbs forebears are also from Md - and VA. After the 1860's my branch is mostly to be found in Iowa. I am most particularly trying to find the parents of my Joshua Crabbs who was born in MD about 1827. It is possible his father was either Joshua or John. His mother's name was almost certainly Emily, according to the 1850 and 1860 MD census - but the father is not listed in either of those census. Although he and his spouse, Thurza Ann Hewett were both born in Md, their children were born in PA and VA. Are any of these names in your records? I would be most grateful for any information on my Crabbs line. Thank you so much!
Penny

Hi,
I have Ann Frances Crabbs 1837-1906 married William Thomas Henley, they lived in Emmitsburg, MD.
Her parents Joseph died 5-21-1851 & Margaret Crabbs
born 12-3-1815 died 10-30-1880. I am looking for Ann's brothers & sisters, and Joseph's parents etc.
There are several Crabbs listed in Emmitsburg's census and James Helman's book "Emmitsburg, MD." I can't seem to figure out how I am related to whom. You can email me direct if you like. sdilbeck@flash.net

Penny I am related to the Crabbs in Iowa. Robert Franklin
Crabbs was my great, great, great grandfather. His father was Joshua Jacob Crabb who worked for General Lee and died in the Civil War. I would like to find out his father's name as we do not know it. Joshua's grandfather was Frederick Crabb and his 3rd wife was Christine Whitmore.
Do you have any more info? I have lots more I can share.

Mary, I am excited to make contact with another of Joshua's descendants - Robert F. Crabbs and Helen Arvilla Johnson were my great-great-grandparents - my great grandmother was their daughter, Julia Grace Crabbs, who married Charles Fast. Which of Robert and Helen Arvilla's children would be your great-great-grandparent? Re. Joshua - there are those who state that another Joshua Jacob Crabbs was our Joshua's father, but there is no proof of that offered that I have found and that Joshua Crabbs had moved to Indiana and was a boatman of some sort, while ours remained in the Md. Va. area and followed the apparent family trade of a miller. I agree that Frederick, b. 1777, was most likely Joshua's grandfather. There is a Benjamin Crabbs listed on the 1830 US census, who has a male child under the age of 5 - and Joshua would have been 3 yrs. at that time. Also, there was a Benjamin F. Crabbs living in the Alexandria Va. household with Joshua's family, who was 1 yr. older and could have been either Joshua's brother or cousin. The Emily Crabbs also living there in 1860 I believe was the Ammony Troxel who married a Benjamin Crabbs in Dec 1827. She likely is not Joshua's mother - maybe his step-mother, or maybe an aunt? I also have much to share on our Crabbs line descended from Robert - and his siblings and his mother, Thirza, but think space will run out here. I would like to give a call - maybe next week or the following week-end - what time zone are you in? I am in Oregon, so Pacific time. I do need to re-visit the info I have as I have been neglecting the research for this last year.
