Does anyone have the 1861 and/or 1871 census for Charmouth, Dorset that they might be willing to look up for me? I am looking for information about my Gt Gt Gt Grandparents George and Elizabeth CRABB (late CROSS, formerly BOARD).

My Gt Gt Grandma Alice Sarah CRABB was born on 24 July 1861 at Axminster Road, Charmouth. By the 1881 census, she was married to my Gt Gt Grandfather William Henry GARLAND, and living in Southampton. On their MCert - Alice's father - George CRABB - was a Shoemaker.

According to the 1881 census, a George and Elizabeth CRABBE are living at Old Lyme Road, Charmouth - aged 65 and 62 respectively - George, a Cordwainer, born in Uplyme, Devon; and Elizabeth, a Laundress, born in Delwood, Devon.

Would anyone be able to tell me what this family were doing in 1861 or 1871?? I would like to know if George and Elizabeth had any other children, and if Alice Sarah was one of them. This would enable me to tie this 1881 entry down as "my" family, and be able to concentrate my research. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I'd also like to hear from anyone also researching this family, or with these people somewhere in their ancestry.

Thanks Alison, Swindon, UK

We are related. By now over the years you will have probably filled in many gaps. There maybe some data that I can share with you that you do not know. Through George and Elizabeth Crabb and Alice's brother's line we get to me and my sister Judy Searle. Her two boys were Olympics in rowing a few times over. 1992 Gold, 1996 bronze and 2012 Greg Searle was a member of the GB 8 at 40 years old that received the bronze medal. There is also a significant connection with the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy that I can share with you. Please email me back:

Hi, Alison -
I checked the 1861 for starters.
There is a George Crabb in Beaminster, Dorset, age 42, born in Beaminster, wife Ellizabeth (42), with several children.
However, there is also a George Crabb in Charmouth, DOR, age 45, born in Uplyme, DEV, wife Elizabeth (41), with several children.
Looks like the second one is your George, based on the Charmouth and the age spread between spouses.
Contact me direct and I can send specifics, if you can figure the right one, and I can follow to the 1871 also.
I don't see a connection to me, but I was following a different Crabb entry which mention a Crabb/Shenton marriage when I stumbled across your unanswered query.
