One of my wife's ancestors was a John Cozby who may be your ancestor. Here is some information I have about him and his descendants.
John Cozby lived in Calhoun's Settlement, 96 District in 1775.

Robert Cozby was born about 1755 in Virginia and died 7 October 1828 at the residence of his son in Triana, Madison Co., Alabama. He was married about 1782. The name of his wife is unknown. He was buried 8 October 1828 at Triana burial ground where his aged wife had been interred. He volunteered for military service in the Revolutionary War and served as a Private in the South Carolina Militia in Captain Thomas Langdon's Company under General Williamson. He was a sergeant in the First Regiment and was shot through the thigh in a skirmish with Tories on 22 November 1775 and lost the use of his leg. Because of his disability, he applied for a pension in Madison Co., 16 November 1818, Pension S 24966. Robert received a pension while a resident of Lowndes Co., Alabama in 1821. His son William was appointed agent to receive payments for his father. He moved from Virginia to South Carolina in 1783, to Elbert Co., Georgia in 1784, to Knox Co., Tennessee and Blount Co., Tennessee in 1793, then back to Knox Co. and Bledsoe Co., Tennessee. He came to Madison Co., Alabama with his son, William, in 1816 and operated a Tailor Shop. He was a resident of Lowndes Co., in 1821.

Josiah Crawford Cozby was born 3 January 1816 in Madison Co., Alabama and died 4 December 1883 in Hamilton Co., Texas. He was buried in Honey Creek Cemetery. He married Susan Anna Whittenburg on 28 December 1841 in Talladega Co., Alabama. She was the daughter of Andrew Whittenburg and Anna Long. She was born 5 November 1825 in Bedford Co., Tennessee and died 4 July 1906 in Hamilton Co., Texas. She was buried in Honey Creek Cemetery. Josiah is listed in the 1880 Limestone Co., Texas Federal Census on page 357, Dwelling 227, Family 239. Listed with Josiah, age 63, is his wife, Susan age 54, daughter Alice, age 28, son George, age 20, daughter Louisa, age 18 and a cousin, James Albright, age 18.
Josiah Crawford Cozby and Susan Anna Whittenburg had, among other children, a daughter named Margaret Mary D. “Belle†Cozby (my wife's great grandmother) was born 16 July 1856 in Texas and died 20 April 1883 at age 26 years, 9 months, 4 days, in Limestone Co., Texas. She was buried in Honest Ridge Cemetery, Limestone Co., Texas. She married William Jefferson "Jeff" Gilbert on 28 October 1875 in Limestone Co., Texas. He was the son of Jackson Gilbert and Nancy Ann Sparkman. He was born in March 1850 in Georgia.
