I visited here to start my family tree. John W. Cozat was my maternal grandfather. His wife, formerly Lena Fike, was my maternal grandmother. They had 7 children: Melvin, William, Joeseph, Kenneth, Elizabeth, Wilma, and Vera. My mother is Elizabeth, the oldest daughter (now Elizabeth Long). As of April 7th, 2000, all children of John W. Cozat are still alive and living in the Coleman Michigan area. I now live in Pittsburgh.

Thank you for your reply. In speaking to my grandmother (90) today, she said she thought that William may have had a brother and very well may have come from Ohio to Missouri as a young man. Her sister (93) has the family bible and the notation is more about Hariett's side of the family. Wm. Cozat was her great-grandfather. Are you doing any more research in Ohio regarding the family?

J. Long-I think I know who the brother was and where. I was in a cemetary in Danville and found a grave and records of a family with the spelling of Cozatt. I cannot find anyother records of this family with this spelling and it is only an hour south of Ohio

Sorry for the extremely long delay in replying. We have been off line for some time waiting for DSL cable internet to come to our area of Pittsburgh.
I have not been doing more research lately--busy with work and restarting college and such. I did gather all the Cozat relatives in Coleman, Michigan (my home town also) last summer for our first family reunion in over 20 years. Sadly, I have lost 3 uncles in the last 1.5 years since first visiting this site--2 of them Cozats (Joe and Ken).
I will call my mom (kind of the family historian) about your last message concerning your grandmother's recollection though. Her side of the family has always had a bit of a mystery about her Fathers (my grandfathers) Dad and his background.
My grandpa, John W. Cozat, was raised in North Western Ohio (west of Toledo). I know he was born around 1903. I am assuming his father would have been 20-30 when grandpa was born so that puts His birthday sometime in the 1870's. It was my grandpa's grandfather who would have been in the Civil War (they referred to him as "Pap"). I have a cousin who has researched him a bit.
That's all for now. If you hear of other information I hope you'll write. There just aren't THAT many 'Cozat's' that we've ever come across so some connection may be possible.

I'm speaking to my mother as I type this. HER great grandfather was "Pap". His name was John F. Cozat. His son was named William A. Cozat--it's possible that John F. may have had a brother,
I know they lived in Paulding County and Van Wert, Ohio. John F. served in the Civil War.
My grandfather, John W. Cozat was one of 5 children of William Cozat. William's father was John F. Cozat. Our question was whether John F. might have had a brother.
My grandfather's family (John W. Cozat) was kind of infamous because his mother and all three sisters died of Tuberculosis one after the other (because they cared for one another). His sisters who died were Deam, Faye, and Irene. His mother was Mary Elizabeth--she also succumbed to the disease. Only my grandfather and his brother Ted were the only survivors. Grandpa died in 1984 and Ted died in 1986--both in Coleman.

Here are the statistics as we know them:
John F. Cozat--1844-1934 (married to Sara Mault)
------William A. Cozat (son of John F.) 1876-1960
-------------John Wesley Cozat (son of William A.) 1903-1984
-------------Ted William Cozat (son of William A.) 1910-1987

All other information I have on John F. (called Pap by our family). He served in Civil War in GAR an Ohio Regiment in 1861.

John Cozat is my grandfather.

Hope that helps.
