Can anyone provide more information as to whom the David Cozard of Alegany County, MD on 1800 census could be directly related to? It has been supposed by some that he may be the son of Anthony and Judith. Does anyone know who this David's wife and children were? The other two Cozards listed are Nathaniel and William. Any thjought as to whether this William might be the William who next appears on 1810 Hardin County, KY census (who married Mary Ruff in 1803)? thanks for all the help. Faith

Re: Cozards in 1800 Maryland
I wish I had the answers to these questions too!!! I have been researching Cozards (my mother's family) for many years. I am pretty certain that the Nathaniel you mention in Allegany census for 1800 is my 3rd great-grandfather. I have traced him next to Greene Co. PA (where his son Daniel - my line - stayed) and then on to Warren Co. OH, where I think he died in the 1840's. I have some old family letters written from Ohio that helped put this together for me. Nathaniel was in Greene Co. Pa in 1810; Wm. Cozat, Samuel Cozat and David Cozet also were in Greene Co. that year. None appear in 1820. Nathaniel went to Ohio around 1816. I have never been able to conclusively link Nathaniel to the New Jersey Cossarts, although I am sure that a link is there. His grandson's(Charles Alex. Cozard) death certificate says that his father (Daniel) was born in NJ and even though I think that Daniel was born in MD, I think that NJ link came from some sort of family story. Early Allegany Maryland records are few and far between. As I'm sure you know, the 1790 census was destroyed - that might have been so helpful! I have found a few references in books on early Maryland history: David Cossart on a muster roll for Washington Co. MD militia in 1775. (Allegany was formed from Washington in about 1789; Washington was formed from Frederick Co. in about 1775-76); Daniel Cossert on another muster roll from Washington Co. In 1778, a list of people who signed patriots' oaths of fidelity in Washington Co. included William Cassart and Daniel Cassart. A list of 1795 Allegany Co. Judgment Records mentions David Casad, as does the 1793 tax assessment. That's about all I have. I would love to hear how you are connected to these Maryland Cozards since it is not a commonly-researched line. Also, what makes you think they are related to Anthony & Judith? Let me know if you want to share more.

Re: Cozards in 1800 Maryland
Jill, Thank you so much for the information. I am related to two lines of Cozad/Cozart, through the marriage of David Cozart, son of Mary Ruff and Will Cozart (of KY) and Susan Cozad, daughter of Elizabeth Hargis and Joseph Cozad. (changed name from Cozart in KY.) David and Susan's eldest son, Joseph was my great great grandfather. I have been trying to discover where both Will and Joseph migrated from before arriving in KY in early 1800. I have tracked them from that period on but cannot seem to find a link to life before KY. One of our cousins advised that Will was actually the son of Anthony from NC but this proved not to be the case as that Will can be tracked to death down south. Another cousin advised that Joseph anmd Will were born in MD. Thus, I concentrated efforts there but have come up empty handed. I do not know whether these two are brother or cousins but it seems likely that they were well known to each other as they appear to have arrived in Christian county,KY about the same time and knew the same people well enough to have legal dealings with them. Any direction you could suggest that might lead me closer to the answer to this mystery is very much appreciated. Thanks
