I have been researching the Coy genealogy for many years and am familiar with William "Billy" Coy of Cumberland, County, Virginia. He and my great-great grandmother Mary Elizabeth Coy Goode were first cousins. You wrote an email to Andree Layton who is now deceased and whom I knew very well. Please tell me more about what you have done. I am happy to share all I know about the Coys since I am currently writing a family genealogy on the Coys of Powhatan, Cumberland, Chesterfield and Henrico Counties, Virginia

I have been able to follow the Coy line back to the Hickmans, Mosbys and Stegers from Germany and of course, Charles Coy. I know that Billy had three wives that I know of and a lot of children. I come from the family he had with Rebecca Hicks, through his son William James Coy Jr.. William Jr. had a son named James Mormon Coy who fathered several children including my father James William Coy by Lucille Sears Coy. James Mormon and Lucille left Virginia and moved to New Jersey probably in the 1920s.

My tree is public and includes some family pictures my father gave me. I need to prune my tree as there is duplicate information and a few errors as well. I would greatly appreciate hearing about anything you have learned about the family.

Thank you for your response.

The Cumberland County Virginia Historical Society published a county history several years ago and the volume is filled with valuable Coy genealogical information concerning William Coy and his descendants.Perhaps there are some copies available even now. In addition I published an article on the Coys of Virginia in an issue of The Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society 1990/1991 that contains samples of primary sources concerning our family. I shall be pleased to continue the connection if you are interested in the Coys.
Are you familiar with Frederick Bell? He is one of Billy's descendants also and has a copy of the heirs of William Coy's estate? Do you own a copy? Here is Fred's email address: Fredbell2@Comcast.net Fred is a descendant of Lusterine Coy- James Morman's sister. Fred resides in Berkely,New Jersey.

Could you tell me the website where your family tree is located? I would like to view the information.

I shall review my material and share more.

I located an article you wrote for the Afro American Historical Society and plan to purchase it. I have been searching for information for a couple of years and when I began, I never expected to find what I have found. My father, James William Coy, who died in 2012 did not know his family history. He did however, have a few pictures, including one of Billie Coy. Since I did not know the Coys were free blacks, I never expected to go beyond the civil war but have gone as far as Tim Mosby and a branch of Europeans The Stegers. I would greatly appreciate any information you are willing to share.

Hi Crystal,

I'm a decendant of William "Billy Coy and Mary Scott Coy. My great great great grandmother Queen Victoria Coy was one of his many children. From Cumberland County VA, we have never had a Coy family reunion. I'm only 29 years of age and don't know much about Mr William Coy.

I'm in the process now of finding out ANY information about him to do family reunion.

Any information would be greatly appreciated my email is kjackson.ihs@gmail.com

Thanks,

Hi D. Jack,

I too am a descendant of Billy Coy by another of his wives Rebecca Hicks. He was my great great grandfather if I'm counting correctly. Have you visited my tree? I need to prune the tree because I have some duplication of a number of people but I have been able to find good documentation on what is there. There is a lot of info on the Coy family listed there and a picture of Billy. He had a lot of children. By the way, my great grandfather was William James Coy Jr. My grandfather James Mormon Coy and my father, James Coy. James Mormon Coy left Virginia and lived most of his adult life in New Jersey.
