I am trying to research my family tree. My great grandfather was John Douglas Coxon b.1889. From what I can gather his brothers and sisters were; Clara, Kathleen, Beatrice, Leslie, Cyril, Marjorie, Gerald and James.

I do believe his parents were James and Sarah. They were in the boot making business in Derbyshire.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Sheree,

Looking at the Free BMDs, there is a birth of a John Douglas COXON:-

Births Mar 1889
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coxon John Douglas Shardlow 7b 465

This certificate would give you his parents name.

There is also a marriage of a James and Sarah . It may be the one you are looking for:-

Marriages Quarter-ending Mar 1884

COXON James Henry Shardlow 7b 609
Moore Sarah Elizabeth Shardlow 7b 609

In the 1881 census there is a James Coxon, shoemaker, who could possibly be an earlier ancestor with a niece staying with him called Sarah:-

Hello Sheree,

I had a look for the children on the Free BMDs and found the following, all in the Shardlow area. The area covers:-

Sub-districts : Castle Donington; Melbourne; Shardlow; Spondon; Stapleford.
GRO volumes : XIX (1837-51); 7b (1852-1930).
Alvaston, Arleston and Sinfin, Aston upon Trent, Barrow upon Trent, Boulton, Breadsall, Breaston, Chaddesden, Chellaston, Dale Abbey, Derby Hills, Draycott and Church Wilne, Elvaston, Hopwell, Kirk Hallam, Little Eaton, Littleover, Long Eaton, Melbourne, Normanton, New Normanton (1837-90), Ockbrook, Osmaston, Risley, Sandiacre, Sawley with Wilsthorpe, Shardlow and Great Wilne, Sinfin Moor, Spondon, Stanley, Stanton by Bridge, Stanton by Dale, Swarkestone, West Hallam, Weston upon Trent.

Beatrice Coxon

Births Q/E Sept.1892
Leslie Coxon

Births Q/E June 1894
Cyril Coxon

Births Q/E Sept.1897
Gerald Keetley Coxon

and then two James Coxons. Maybe one died!

Births Q/E Sept.1898
James William Coxon

Biths Q/E Dec.1899

I didn't find a Margaret in the Shardlow area. I see Sandiacre is in the Shardlow district, where the older James I sent you on the 1881 census was born.

I currently live in Edinburgh and the family have done so for the last 54 years. My father was Allan Hartley Coxon born Derby (22/11/09) & Died 27/10/01 who latterly moved to Scotland and established himself as a Head of Dept. in Ancient Greek mythology at Edinburgh University. He still has a surviving brother, Stanhope Coxon, who was an accountant and beekeeper and still lives in Inverness with his 101 year old wife. Any Derbyshire connection is of interest as I look for certain roots all the time. Best wishes, Ed Coxon.
