John Francis Coxon (gr.father)b. 1887-died, 1959; in Baltimore, MD, Old North Pt. Rd.; wife, Anna Katherine Kestner; had 4 boys, Charles Francis, John, both dead, Frank, Wm. Theodore living. Mother died when my father, Wm.T. was only 10 yrs. old; Was told that my great-grandfather was a potter; and that the family was a large one. When they came here from England, they settled in NJ and MD. My father, Wm.T, is going to be 78, and is troubled that he does not know of any Uncles or Aunts. It would make him, and our entire family happy to find as many members of the Coxon heritage as we can. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Lori, sorry it took me so long to reply. Your info. seems to fit in perfectly, but I still need to contact some distant cousins to verify. My gfather was born here in MD in 1887. I know he had brothers and sisters, but don't know how to find out. His father was born in England, (town unknown), and I was told many Coxon's came to the US and settled in NJ and MD. Oh, and also, my ggfather was a Potter. I will get back to you as soon as I get more info.

Thanks!
Jean

I was just reading your message on where your Coxon ancestors were from. I am a Coxon and I previously lived in MD. I remember my parents having a bible with some of my ancestors names in it. My father is William F. Coxon III and my uncle is David R Coxon. They were born in upstate New York and I remember that their ancestors were originally from England. Currently they live in MD. I remember a Rose Coxon in the book, but I can't think of any others off the top of my head.
Can you name any of your Coxon ancestors that were from England and possibly tell me anything that you have found out just for curiousity reasons, and if you have found out anything interesting. I am just now starting this and I am curious to see how far back I can go with this. Thank You, David Coxon

I read your message and I find it to be interesting. My father's name is William F. Coxon III. He was born in Upstate NY and now resides in MD. He says that the 2 William's above him did not live in Potomac, MD. I am curious to find the relation of the William Coxon that you mentioned living in Potomac, MD.
Do you know of any earlier Coxon's? Have you found out anything interesting? Thanks for any help, David Coxon

Coxons of Stoke-on-Trent

The Coxons of Stoke-on-Trent

My name is Steve (Stephen William) Coxon, b in 1958 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. I have three brothers, Paul, Andrew and Philip. Our father is William Arthur Coxon, married to Patricia (nee Daley). Our paternal grandfather is Frederick Samuel Coxon. Both he and my father worked in the building trade throughout their working lives. My father’s brother is David and his sister is Ann (now Smith).

My great-grandfather William – a fireman by profession - was killed in France during WW1 on Wednesday, 5th June 1918, nearly three years after his brother – Robert Arthur – was also killed (Saturday, 25th September, 1915). William left a widow, Grace. You can see their details and search for other Coxons who fell during the wars through the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website – www.cwgc.org. The site is often very busy and it can be difficult to connect at times. They were the sons of Frederick and Elizabeth Coxon who lived at 71, Cobden Street, Longton, Staffordshire (now part of Stoke-on-Trent).

I believe the family had strong links with Bolton and Preston in Lancashire, with a branch in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

Other names featured in the family history on the paternal side include Hammersley, Sturgess and Hales (of Norton-in-Hales, Staffordshire). On my mother’s side, family names include Flynn and Byrne. The Daleys have a strong presence in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire and around Toronto, Canada.

If I can find out more about my ancestry, I’ll let you know. If there’s any information you need that I may be able to find, get in touch.

Hi Steve,
Great to hear from you. Many of my Coxon line
were potters in Staffordshire. Many from Hanley,Fulford,Longton,Durham,Burslem. Other related surnames are FINK,CLAY,SMITH,CARTWRIGHT,CARTLIDGE,BALL,COATES, FOSKETT ....all from Staff. Do you have any potters in your family. A few of my Coxon's came to America in 1850's and settled in Trenton NJ creating the Coxon Thompson pottery and the Ceramic Art Co. Any relation?
