Hi cousin,
These two were my gggrandparents. Their daughter Mary Josephine "Louisa" Pucket married Benjamin Franklin Coxe of Baton Rouge. The Puckets were from Livingston Parish. I do have a few records on them that I will have to look up. Richard died early, and his 2nd wife Gertrude lived close to the Coxes in Port Hudson in E. Baton Rouge. There were several other children including Annie and Pliny Pucket. Welcome to the search! If you put your email on, I will give you more info. Pat Drummond

Lisa, I am looking for info on the Coxes-trying to make a connection, but it is very hard. My dad was the son of Lonnie and Marietta Grey Coxe. Lonnie was the son of Peter and Sally English Coxe.So as far as I have been able to get is my great-grandparents. If you have any info I would appreciate it. Thanks, Vicky

have been going over and over my family tree...trying to find one of my missing Cox links. I had forgotten the story my grandmother always told me. Here's some background info--
My grandmother is Alice Luellen Cox Foster born 1919 in Cabin Creek, Kanawha County, WV. She's suffered from Alzhiemer's disease for about 16 years now and is in the last stages. Her parents were James Elden Cox (born May 10, 1881 died 1957) and Hattie Virginia Basham (May 19, 1886-1932). Hattie is buried at Red Warrior, Kanawha Co. I have most of Hattie's family tree. She was the daughter of David Allen Basham and Minerva Jane Cox. Minerva was the daughter of Matthew Cox and Mary Lilly. James' side that is so hard to find. His father was Joe Cox and his mother was Rosetta Ayers/Aires. I know he had one full sister, Laura and four half-sisters, including one named Ruby. Rosetta is buried near Hattie at Red Warrior.
Now to the story:
At first, I was think "y" or "ey". But I know why I was confused, the sound that "ey" actually makes--"E".
My grandmother would always tell me the story that her father had told her. That a long time ago, Coxes spelled their name with an "E". Over time, they dropped the "e" to become cox. I don't know how long ago this was. I thought at first it was a little joke that James was pulling on his children, until I read your message. But, I have alot of my grandmother's old possessions and alot of my great grandfather's. In an old memo book, the name "Coxe" not Cox is written repeatedly.

Daniel Coxe Sr was married to Hanna Thrash. Believe he was born in Freeland and she in Weatherly. If it's the same people.
