I recently started on the journey to find out who my Cowling ancestors are. Clarence Joe was my grandfather, and up until this week, that along with the fact he had a twin sister named Clara and he is buried between Clarksville and DeKalb is all I've known. He passed away when I was three years old. Ernest Harold was his brother. Clarence Joe had two sons, my father- Harold Wayne (d. 11/2007) and Lawrence Ray (d. 3/2005). I drove today to the Madras Cemetery in Red River County, TX to see his grave, which is next to Ernest Harold's. Any other information you may have concerning this family line would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Cowling from Yorkshire DNA test

Thank you for your reply. I doubt that we would find a DNA connection through autosumnal DNA, as any connection would be very far back. My Cowlings were in Pateley Bridge from about 1708 and yours were in Silsden.
I wouldn't be too surprised that your DNA shows Irish percentage. According to autosumnal DNA my own DNA is only 33% British, yet I've traced my family back at least a couple of hundred years in all directions and all were British. But I think it shows that further back most of them were invaders - Saxons, Vikings etc... Anyway I'm pleased to be a mixture!
I have found some definite connections through DNA testing - 4th and 5th cousins. Also the DNA shows the correct connection between myself and my uncle and my cousin, who have all tested their DNA - so I am confident in it. It is just quite difficult to interpret, but I joined one of the forums for the Cowling YDNA type (male line) and they are making a lot of progress lately in understanding where they came from. As more people get tested and they do more research on archaeological remains, I am sure it will become clearer.
So far my uncle is the only male Cowling I know of that has been tested, and he has a rare YDNA signature, so it would be very interesting if any other male Cowlings with Yorkshire roots got tested, to see if they match him.
I did my testing through "Family Tree DNA", and I found their "family finder" tool very useful. I'm not sure if ancestry have a similar thing to help you find cousins.
Anyway good luck.
Regards, Jenny

My great grandmother was a Patience Cowling of Brunthwaite near Silsden (Kildwick registers) and I have recently had a DNA test done by Ancestry. I believe it to have been contaminated in the process since they describe me as 24% Irish when I know my ancestor pedigree tree has no one at all with Irish antecedents on it. A Cowling married to become a Fort. That family came over with the Conqueror. That was on my father's side. My father was a Martin, which is also a French name, On my mother's side I am descended from the Huguenots. Yet with all these French connections there is not one mention of it, so I do not know whether this DNA test will be be of use to either of us. I discovered that Guy Fawkes born in York had a mother who was a 'West Yorkshire Cowling'. I wonder whether either of us is connected to him.

Hi again
Samuel Cowling (1757 to 1794). Christened at St Peters, Birstall on 30th Oct 1757. Shown as the son of Samuel Cowling of Adwalton. m. Witnesses were Thomas Atkinson & Robert Turner. Samuel was buried in Birstall Parish on 24th May 1794 (shown as Samuel Cowling of Adwalton). There is an admon document registered at the Prerogative & Exchequer Courts of York o 28th May 1794. According to my records your great grandfather was named Christopher Cowling (Born in Rothwell in 1847). Your great great grandfather was also named Christopher Cowling (Born in Gildersome in 1810). Your ggg grandfather was named James Cowling & he was born in Drighlington in 1783. My records also show that your father had a brother named Seth Cowling who was born in 1910. Is that correct?

Hi thanks for getting back to me. My father Samuel was definitely born March 1, 1917, but I was told he had an older sister by the name of Mary and his father's name was Seth. I may have this incorrect. His father Seth apparently died when my father was in WWII and his sister died when she was in her 20's. Do you know more about the Samuel Cowling on your side of the family tree?

Hi Paul,
After joining Ancestry.ca, I believe this is exactly the family tree I am looking for. My father Samuel was born in 1917 to Seth and Annie (Knocton) in Wortley. He had an older sister Mary and brother Seth. What else do you know about them?

His mother's name was Anne and she died approx.
1920. His father's name was Seth. Do any of these people sound familiar to you. I am looking for information on my father's side of the family.

Hi Pat,
Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I am finding it very difficult to get any where with my grandfathers history, the only information I have,
He was born in Nth Fitzroy, Melbourne, Vic,
11th May 1905 Stephen Francis Cowling
Died 14 Sept 1961, buried at Peake SA
Married 14 Sept 1926, Adelaide Registry Office
Annie Elizabeth Hutchens
Fathers name : Thomas Cowling
Lived in Nth Fitzroy, no idea where he was born and no mothers name, no dob or death for Thomas.
Have not been able to obtain birth cert for Stephen as it appears his birth wasnt registered. Stephen died before i was born so never knew him, and my mum says that he never spoke about his family, apparently he left home at age 14 yrs, So you can see I have very little to go on, and very hard to know what steps to take. Regards Pauline
I to born in Australia/South Australia

Hi Pat,
Yes, I have death certificate and marriage certificate for Stephen Francis Cowling obtained from SABDM,
Death cert Ref 00318282 6184
Marriage cert
I do have a copy of the marriage cert but unfortunately when Ive copied it I have cut off any ref no.
But Stephen and Annie were married at the Registrar General, Flinders st Adelaide, sept 14th 1926, father listed as Thomas.
Stephens birthplace listed as Melbourne, Victoria on death cert.
As you can see I have very limited information, which makes it very difficult to find any leads, As yet I have not been able to get to a library to trace information there.
My thoughts exactly, if they lived in Melbourne until Stephen was 14, he must have gone to school somewhere??
I will leave you with it, I unfortunately dont have any other helpfull information.
Regards Pauline

I am looking for information on a James Cowling born about 1843 in England (as legend goes). He married Anna Catherine Ward in 1877 in Livingston County Illinois Nevada Township. I have no other record of him in Illinois or anywhere else. They had a son , James Riley Cowling born in 1883 In Illinois who married a first time and the details of this are unknown. It was a rumor he had a family he left behind in Tidewater, Va. His second marriage was to a Ethel Scott in 1918 in Richmond Va. James Riley Cowling died in 1928 in Va.
Anna Catherine Ward's family was from Ohio.
There are lots of James Cowlings and finding the connection has been difficult.
My fathers side of the family have a deep connection with the Cowling family, that still live in the Brendon Hills - Raleighs Cross pub would be the nearest point as the farmhouse was sold in the 1990s/2000 The farming family there were Ralph and Margie Cowling who were first cousins I believe that had 7 children. The ones I know of are Fred, Stan and Audrey who lives in Canada who we still keep in contact with. I do not know if this matches up with your records I am trying to find my fathers grandmothers family Joanna Watts who died in Somerset and had a big connection with the Cowlings not sure if by friendship or whether by lineage.

Hi. I know this is a long shot but I don't suppose anyone may know of a John Cowling born 1866. In Ripon Yorkshire. He married a Mary Paver in Kirkthorpe 26th May 1890. On the marriage certificate his father is named as James Cowling, Stonemason. I don't seem to be able to find either John or James before the 1891 census which is very strange! If anyone has any information I'd be very grateful. Many thanks, Helen.
