Hello and greetings - tomorrow I will be visiting friends on the Isle of Man - and with the name Cowin - thought that I might be in good company.

My tale is somewhat complicated since I was adopted (the name of my birth certificate being Williams) - but the adoptee family (from Salford) was Cowin.

A few years back - on a flight to Canada - a guy introduced himself - he too was a (Frank) Cowin. I had understood from some years earlier that the name Cowin was very common on the island - I will have a look in the local phone book on arrival.

Kind regards -

John Cowin (now living in Essex)

I am Justin Jerard Lawson, I was born Apr 29, 1977. My mother's name is Nikki. I thought I should let you know the correct spellings of our names and the date of my birth for historical reasons. I never knew that Rocky's name was Randall as well. I remember talking on the phone years ago with Franki and Jonni (I think I was 7 or 8 at the time). I'm very sorry to hear of grandpa (Bob) Lawson's passing. I would very much like to have said thank you to him and grandma (Mickey) for all their kindness over the many years, even if we saw each other very little. I have very fond memories of them both, and wish things could have been different for everyone. Please convey this to Mickey when next you see or speak to her as I'm afraid I'll never get the opportunity to do so myself.

You may well be correct about Tessie being Teresa or Jessie - I have just been working from a list my Mother wrote out some time ago where she showed Tessie as Mrs Edwards.
Heather Crescent definitely rings a bell - I'm sure my father lived in Pulrose at some time in his youth, and I can remember Uncle Dick (Richard) living there (and drinking in the Quarterbridge pub !).
I grew up in Willaston.
What is your connection to the Cowins ?
Andy
PS also e-mailed you
I am afraid I just don't know any further info. than in my previous query. I think likely my birthdate of 1851, Isle of Man would have come from their marriage or census info. It gets a bit tricky when one starts on the "4th. marriage" as this was Mary Ann Tanner-McKain-Collis-Bust-Cowin 4th. husband.
Hi Nancy, Thanks for the info…I do believe that this group of Cowans (Cowin) is probably ours. One thing I’ve noticed in a couple of the censes is that they are next door to Crocketts, so I wonder if they are related also. I think they were next door in the 1810 Wythe census and also next to Isabella and Elizabeth in the 1850 Wythe census. In the 1860 Wythe census, Elizabeth and James are living next door to Fugates, which was the last name of George’s first wife. They must have moved closer to thme. She had apparently died and he has the two children with him.

By 1870 they were in Wafsee, Pulaski Co, Virginia, he had remarried Nancy Castle, my gg-grandmother. They were still in Hiwassee, Pulaski Co, Virginia in 1880. By 1900 Geroge and his whole clan had moved to Morristown, Hamblen Co, TN. I don’t know whether Elizabeth's brothers went or not. That might be something else to look into.
Take care and thanks again for the information! Debi

Wm. James COWIN b. 1851 Isle of Man s/o John COWIN & Margaret MORTON MANN m.? Mary Ann TANNER COLLIS BUST

Hi; This is one of those longshots. I have just discovered that a Wm. James Cowin b. 1851, Isle of Man, s.o. John & Margaret (Morton) Mann may be husband #4 of my Mary Ann (Tanner-Collis-Bust). If so there is confusion to this as he may have been married previously to Margaret & she is shown as a widow after the marriage to Mary?? Tanner is my interest & I was given a 'Tanner Family Album' of old unidentified pictures etc. In this one is a picture taken at Isle of Man, thus my extra interest in your item. Does anything sound like any kind of a connection to your searching. I think the picture was about 1863. Thanks.

I am researching my family tree (Cowin side) and I am looking for the above people who were born and married in the Isle of Man.They had at least one son William who was born in 1843 in Lackley IOM. William moved over to Hoylake UK and was married to Mary Ann Cowell (b.1843 d.1876-78) 1 child - and then Isabella Cubbin (b1846, Kirk Partrick IOM) 5 children. Is anyone related to them or know who John Cowins parents, grandparents etc were?

Do you know where Henry and William were in 1850?
I find a Henry King COWAN in Greene County in 1850 near a William, He had a John L. 3 living with him which would help explain why no children with William, but he was the wrong age. I find another William in Greene Co, No children ??? Oldest child born in 1847 or so. Could be a son of his wife?
I found a Henry in Sugar Loaf twp, Marion County, AR in 1840. ???
Then I find Henry and William in Sugar Loaf twp Carroll County AR, 1860

I descend from William who may have had a daughter who married a Wadkins/Watkins. My GGGrandfather Alfred Robert WATKINS is 16 in 1880 in Brown County, TX listed as a grandson. He married Elizabeth, age 16, Step-daughter of William, and Son of Elizabeth Sondles Owen.
Thanks for any info.
Krealyn Watkins Brecht
PS I have moved from CA to Stone County, MO, and have finished the circle started by my family.
Tressa, what do you know about these men aside from the dates and states you post? Have you found them in all possible census records? Are these men you *think* are your direct male ancestral line, or only suspect? Whom did they marry, where, and when? Where were they born, where did they die, and where are they buried? What records have you already consulted, and where was that research done?

Is this your father's listing in the Social Security Death Index? WILLIAM COWAN, 11 Jun 1898 - Feb 1984. Last residence: Brownwood, Brown Co. TX 76801. Last benefit: Brownwood, Brown Co. TX 76801. SSN# 450-26-9959, issued Texas? If so, there are a couple of things you can do with this record. Go to http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi and find your father's record, and then add a Postem with your contact information. This will help any cousins who are out-of-touch and looking for your family to find you. Next, click on the SS-5 letter link, and print out a request to the Social Security Administration requesting a copy of his SSN application. Enclose a check, and mail.

Finally, are you a member of the Cowan list? That's where you will find most of the Southern US Cowan researchers. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/cowan.html for more information.

Hi to all the cowins out there!. I have traced my cowin line back to c1676 in the Isle of Man with the help of Pauline, a distant relative who now lives there. I am now looking for family in Hoylake Wirral who are related to William Cowin b.1814 d.1917 Hoylake. We ran a chimney sweep business in Hoylake for over 100 years.
Debi,

I've been looking into the 1830 C. Wythe Co., VA. It shows a James Cowin, Elizabeth Cowin, Thomas Cowin, Samuel Cowin, and Joseph Cowin.

James, age 40-50 yrs, wife the same w/children.

Elizabeth, age 20-30, no husband, mother age 70-80. She also has children.

Thomas, age 30-40, wife the same w/children.

Samuel, age 40-50, wife the same w/children.

Joseph, age 30-40, no wife w/children.

This would put this Elizabeth with brothers and also shows birth around the turn of the century 1800.

I agree with you about this Elizabeth and George being your Elizabeth. Wythe and Pulaski Co. are side by side and the area of Black Lick where my Isabella lived is on the eastern part of Wythe Co., VA It is now know as Fort Chiswell. I-85 and I-77 combine in this area of the county. I'll have to look at the location of Hiwasee. Looks like it's near Newbern. One of the Census' has Newbern as the Post Office.

If you want you can contact me at NWGrigg@aol.com

Nancy

The 1850 VA Census for Wythe Co. shows Elizabeth Cowin, b. 1792, age 58 with her sister Isabella Cowin Painter as head of household(My 3rd G-Grandmother) George, b.1827 age 23 yrs.

This is all the info I have on the Cowins. The only reason I know that Isabella was a Cowin is that my mother has it in her Bible as Dabney Painter married to Nancy Cowin d/o James Cowin. Isabella Cowin is the correct name for her, though. Dabney died around 1835 and left her with all the children. My 2nd G-Grandfather was Stuart/Steward Painter.
Isabella is listed as Head of Household in several census' after Dabney's death. She resides in a house beside of her brothers-in-law, Isaac, George, and Mathais Painter in 1840. The only one that has Elizabeth listed by name is the 1850 C. along with George.

I will continue to search for more info. Sorry I couldn't be anymore help. Nancy

There are several of us trying to find more information on Elizabeth Cowan, my ggg-grandmother. Her son was George Washington Cowan, b. in VA 1812, and died in Morristown, TN 1927. We've all hit a stone wall when researching Elizabeth, and it's looking more and more as if she was not married. It's also looking as if her father was James Cowan.

An October 3, 2006 post from msrehm states that they may have had a brother, Samuel, born in Wytheville in 1816 or 1817. She states there is a land record for an early Samuel Cowan and Wife Jean of Knoxville to a Hugh Montgomery.

Samuel T. Cowan and Margaret Maria Halsey Cowan had the following children;
1. Senah (Asentha) Cowan married probably Clayborn Lawson
2. James N. Cowan married to Alberta Lindsay
3. William Cowan married to Mary L. Patterson
4. Martha Cowan married to
5. Mary Elizabeth Cowan married Rush Patterson
6. Sophia (Sylvia) Cowan
7. Samuel Cowan married Margaret Leedy
9. Guy T. Cowan married 1. Mary T. Patterson 2. Eliza Thompson 3. Tina Leadman
10. Horton Cowan married Cora Fowler
11. Rachel Cowan married Thomas Proffitt.

She also states that there are marriage records for Farney Jones and Rebecca Cowan on Feb 22. 1831 and Merideth Hurt and Lucinda Cowan on March 22, 1833. These are possible siblings for my Samuel T. Cowan.

Any additional information you can find would be helpful.

Thanks,

Debi
Isabel COWIN, b. 1740/1, dau of John COWIN & Margaret COWLE

Jan
I cannot find a Charles Cowin, but i did find an Isabel Cowin in my ancestory. She was the Sister of John Thomas Cowin, daughter of John Cowin and Margaret Cowle. I followed that vein and found that Margaret Cowle's parents were John Cowle and Margaret Killey(Kelly Perhaps?). Going further down the vein, John Cowle's parents were Charles Cowle, and Isabel Kneal. I still couldnt find any proof to the name charlotte.
I did read somewhere that the Cowan/Cowin/Cowle, were sometimes confused or inter-used, as the case may be.
But in my studies, Charles Cowle DOES Go back to the Isle of Man. he was born Mar. 6 1720-21.Died Est. 1771-1813. and Isabel, born Mar 5, 1740-1741, died Est. 1772-1835. However, there was only one child that i can find. He was John Cowle B.Feb 26, 1769, D Est. 1801. Let me know if this info helps. haha, or does it confuse? :) E-mail me at CFisk101@aol.com

Dear Ron, nice to hear from you. My Cowin family on the IOM consists of Charles (Chas) Cowin who i think was not married to his "partner" Isabelle/Isabella Kelly. He had a daughter though called Charlotte Cowin who was born around 1843 on the island. (I think in the Peel area of the island). Thats all the information i have. Have you tried the bulletin board specifically for those searching for relatives on the Isle of Man? If not, let me know if you want the e-mail address and i will find it for you.
Regards Jan

Susan I might have some information that can help you. I am fairly sure there was a Patricia Cowin that lived down the street from me and it was rumoured that she was adopted.I am not sure of the spelling of her last name though. My wife's last name is Cowan and she reads both the Cowin and Cowan message boards and there seems to be some confussion as to who is related to who and she is still trying to figure it out. My mother will have more information as she was friends with the Cowin's or Cowan's which ever the case may be.I will ask her and I will let you know. S.Henderson.

William COWAN is consistent about his place of birth, if not his age. in the censuses he says he was born in MO.
I think the William COWAN I find in 1850 in Greene County MO in Ozark TWP is "our" Bill. two pages away, is Henry COWAN and family. I find them next to each other in 1860.
OK, if this is William, where is Jeanette and John Elvance? John Elvance should be about 2 yrs old.
Could he actually be the son of Jeanette and a first husband? All the OWEN children took the name COWAN in 1870.
Ozark County marriages:
COWENS DOW MAY 8 1866 TABOR LUISA
He is in the household of Henry COWAN in 1860.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Krealyn
I'd like to welcome you to the Cowin Message Board. I'm the Admin, and also have the Cowen, Colquhoun, Calhoun and other variant spellings boards. We have a nice little Cowin list, for those of you who are interested, but the most active list is the Cowan list, of course. For more information, see

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/cowin.htm
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/cowin.html

Notice that we can now list surnames that are mentioned in each post, and choose a classification. Please do this each time you post, to enable others to find you! Use Query for all questions, even about various Data types. The Data classifications are for actual Bible records, Obituaries, Pension files, etc. Also notice that you can attach pictures, scans of documents, and short GEDCOMS to your posts, too. This should really help our research!

I hope to see you all on the list,

Valorie Zimmerman
Black Diamond, Washington USA

COWAN DNA Project for COWAN/ COWEN/ COWIN males

The members of the Cowen-L and Cowin-L have been invited to participate in the COWAN DNA Project. The person who contributes the DNA (via a painless swab of the inner cheek) must be a Cowan/Cowen/Cowin-surnamed male, with a direct line -- in other words, no adoptions in the male line. The cost is about $100, and makes a great gift, by the way. That's what my dad is getting for his birthday next month. :-)

My hope is that his results will prove my theory that his line of Cowans from Selkirkshire Scotland, actually tie into the Sterlingshire and Scotch-Irish Cowans. I hope eventually some of the Colquhoun, Calhoun, Cahoon etc. males join in this study also, to determine whether we are kin to them, too.

Laura Cowan Cooper, who is in charge of this project, has said, "Let me know if you have someone that can take part. I need name, address,
phone number, contact e-mail, and the line from that person back to oldest known ancestor." The group doing the actual running of the samples is http://www.familytreedna.com. They actually offer a free video, if you are interested in this Project, but have questions.

If you are interested now, just go to http://www.FamilyTreeDNA.com and locate the Cowan group and request a kit. Laura will respond with your kit number, and further instructions. She will need your male line (by email) so that the findings can be correlated. If you are a Cowen/Cowin female, Laura suggests that you "sponsor a male brother, uncle, father, or cousin" -- which is what I did. Or a few people could get together the money.

Laura will be writing the list with occasional updates, as more men join the Project and get their results. It's all very exciting!

Valorie Zimmerman

Re: Alonzo Leroy COWIN, 1928-1977 - grandson of Alonzo COWIN b. c1860 OH?

Ramona, a search of the Social Security Death Index, http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi gives the following results for a search for Alonzo COWIN:

ALONZO COWIN, 13 Apr 1928 - Sep 1977, SSN 283-22-9552 issued in Ohio. Once you locate his entry, if you click on the SS-5 link, you can generate and print out a letter requesting his SSN application, and mail it to the SSA with your check. Usually a location for last residence is listed, but none was, in this case. At least you have a date, so that you can search for an obituary. I would contact the Veterans Administration with this information, also. You may also be able to find him or his brother and sister in city directories. Since you know that Louisa was in Wilmington, Ohio, I would zero in on that. If you don't have access to records there, use the USGenWeb sites for Holmes, Tuscarawas and Clinton counties -- and perhaps volunteers from Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, http://www.raogk.org, for ancestors only. RAOGK does no lookups involving living persons.

Also, you will want to click the Post Em link, and leave your contact information. Have you requested his records from the Army? I searched for Manuel COWIN in the SSDI and did not find him; nor did I find him in http://www.theultimates.com/white/ . :(

The only Alonzo Cowin I found in the Ancestry index to the 1930 US Census: Cowin, Alonzo F
Age: 70 Year: 1930
Birthplace: Ohio Roll: T626_1820
Race: White Page: 10B
State: Ohio ED: 20
County: Hancock Image: 0889
Township: Findlay
Relationship: Head

Much too old to be your Alonzo, who would have been 2 years old, but perhaps his grandfather? The link to the image didn't take me to see Alonzo, unfortunately.

I hope some of this information helps. Good luck!

Valorie

Jason B. COWAN joined Union Army in Boston, Mass 1860s

I am looking for information on Cowens, Cowans, or Cowins from the Boston, Mass area during the Civil War Era. Just general information about the family in the Massachusetts area would be useful to me. I'm interested in social and religious backgrounds of the family.

My gg grandfather was Jason B. Cowan who joined the Union Army in the Boston area. He served in G Company, 36th Infantry as a private. I pulled his military record in the National Archives, but I didn't get any other information except that he was hospitalized many times during the war and got out in Tennessee.

He ended up in Northern Alabama in 1881, married my gg grandmother and then divorced in 1887. He filed for his pension in 1909, but was denied.
