There are several of us trying to find more information on Elizabeth Cowan, my ggg-grandmother. Her son was George Washington Cowan, b. in VA 1812, and died in Morristown, TN 1927. We've all hit a stone wall when researching Elizabeth, and it's looking more and more as if she was not married. It's also looking as if her father was James Cowan.

An October 3, 2006 post from msrehm states that they may have had a brother, Samuel, born in Wytheville in 1816 or 1817. She states there is a land record for an early Samuel Cowan and Wife Jean of Knoxville to a Hugh Montgomery.

Samuel T. Cowan and Margaret Maria Halsey Cowan had the following children;
1. Senah (Asentha) Cowan married probably Clayborn Lawson
2. James N. Cowan married to Alberta Lindsay
3. William Cowan married to Mary L. Patterson
4. Martha Cowan married to
5. Mary Elizabeth Cowan married Rush Patterson
6. Sophia (Sylvia) Cowan
7. Samuel Cowan married Margaret Leedy
9. Guy T. Cowan married 1. Mary T. Patterson 2. Eliza Thompson 3. Tina Leadman
10. Horton Cowan married Cora Fowler
11. Rachel Cowan married Thomas Proffitt.

She also states that there are marriage records for Farney Jones and Rebecca Cowan on Feb 22. 1831 and Merideth Hurt and Lucinda Cowan on March 22, 1833. These are possible siblings for my Samuel T. Cowan.

Any additional information you can find would be helpful.

Thanks,

Debi

The 1850 VA Census for Wythe Co. shows Elizabeth Cowin, b. 1792, age 58 with her sister Isabella Cowin Painter as head of household(My 3rd G-Grandmother) George, b.1827 age 23 yrs.

This is all the info I have on the Cowins. The only reason I know that Isabella was a Cowin is that my mother has it in her Bible as Dabney Painter married to Nancy Cowin d/o James Cowin. Isabella Cowin is the correct name for her, though. Dabney died around 1835 and left her with all the children. My 2nd G-Grandfather was Stuart/Steward Painter.
Isabella is listed as Head of Household in several census' after Dabney's death. She resides in a house beside of her brothers-in-law, Isaac, George, and Mathais Painter in 1840. The only one that has Elizabeth listed by name is the 1850 C. along with George.

I will continue to search for more info. Sorry I couldn't be anymore help. Nancy

Debi,

I've been looking into the 1830 C. Wythe Co., VA. It shows a James Cowin, Elizabeth Cowin, Thomas Cowin, Samuel Cowin, and Joseph Cowin.

James, age 40-50 yrs, wife the same w/children.

Elizabeth, age 20-30, no husband, mother age 70-80. She also has children.

Thomas, age 30-40, wife the same w/children.

Samuel, age 40-50, wife the same w/children.

Joseph, age 30-40, no wife w/children.

This would put this Elizabeth with brothers and also shows birth around the turn of the century 1800.

I agree with you about this Elizabeth and George being your Elizabeth. Wythe and Pulaski Co. are side by side and the area of Black Lick where my Isabella lived is on the eastern part of Wythe Co., VA It is now know as Fort Chiswell. I-85 and I-77 combine in this area of the county. I'll have to look at the location of Hiwasee. Looks like it's near Newbern. One of the Census' has Newbern as the Post Office.

Hi Nancy, Thanks for the info…I do believe that this group of Cowans (Cowin) is probably ours. One thing I’ve noticed in a couple of the censes is that they are next door to Crocketts, so I wonder if they are related also. I think they were next door in the 1810 Wythe census and also next to Isabella and Elizabeth in the 1850 Wythe census. In the 1860 Wythe census, Elizabeth and James are living next door to Fugates, which was the last name of George’s first wife. They must have moved closer to thme. She had apparently died and he has the two children with him.

By 1870 they were in Wafsee, Pulaski Co, Virginia, he had remarried Nancy Castle, my gg-grandmother. They were still in Hiwassee, Pulaski Co, Virginia in 1880. By 1900 Geroge and his whole clan had moved to Morristown, Hamblen Co, TN. I don’t know whether Elizabeth's brothers went or not. That might be something else to look into.
Take care and thanks again for the information! Debi
