Hi,

My dads Dad was George Matthew Cowen who would have been born around the 1900 mark.

He left my dad during/ just after WWII when my dad was a young boy (Brian (my dad) born 1938) so I would love to make contact with any new family that he may have started....

He was in the army, but I cannot tel what regiment from the photo that I have.

Anyone have a grandad/ Great grandad that fits that description. His new family may not even know that he had a son as my dad never saw him again.

Thanks

Demelza

My grandfather George is proving quite elusive...

He left my dad in around 1940-1945 when they were living in Andover.
My dad, Brian, was born in littleborough, Lancs to Sybil Primrose West/Palmer/Cowen

Any clues on George, he may have found love with a nurse in during the war?

Thanks

Demelza

If you haven't come across this information let me know and I can try to provide it to you. I have filled in a bit more information about Ralph's siblings than you have. Access my tree "Henchbarger compiled by Tracy" to compare notes. You can access my tree by clicking my user name. Good luck! Tracy Henchbarger

I am seeking information about any Colquhouns who moved south to London after the uprising in 1745 and may have anglicized their name.
Specifically I am interested in George Cowen who was appointed to the Thames Water Police by the magistrate Patrick Colquhoun in 1798. They were both from Glasgow, were they related?

I noticed that you pulled up 1880 census of Benjamin Ai Cowan and son Israel. I am the great granddaughter of Benjamin through Israel's sister Mary Elizabeth listed on that census as Lillie M. Shroyer, her married name at that time. If I can be of help to you, I do have information on some of the Israel Cowan family. I am looking for Benjamin Ai Cowan's Father. On the 1880 Census he says his father came from Ireland and on another census he says from Scotland. I do not have a name for him, do you? Thanks, hope to hear from you.

Hello! I'm not sure if there is any connection, but my husband's Cowan line lived in the St. Clair county area around 1840-1880 that we know. Some of them migrated to St. Francis county Arkansas around the end of the 1800's into the early 1900's. They lived in the Colt and Wynne, Arkansas area. If you think there may any connection, I would be glad to share what I know. What time frame are you researching for Birmingham?
Greetings,

I compiled and researched for a 3 CD set of the music of Ina Ray Hutton:

http://www.futurenoisemusic.com/product.aspx?id=738

It was released last year in England and the results were quite good. At the time I was trying to find out any info I could get on Miss Hutton to write the liner notes for the CD and naturally her mother Marvel as well. Ultimately, I found very little info on Marvel but would still be interested in anything you discover.

Thanks,

A. Maroulis

I'm pretty sure I know your father - Robert Reed Cowens. His father (your grandfather) was an Irishman who married a mulatto woman in Iowa. Your father was raised by his Irish father, from what I know, in a farm area. Your father was killed in a domestic dispute in 1969. Your father had a degree from the University of Iowa in Psychology. You also have a half-brother. Your father was married 3x. I did not know your mother. The Irishman is dead now, as he died in the 1960's as well (before your father). Maybe there are people in Iowa who can tell you more. Good luck!

Holli,
Thank you for all of this information. I believe I picked the info up from "Genealogical and Family History of Western New York" publ. 1912.
I do know that finding it in print does not make it true!

I appreciate you sharing the details of the mystery that is John Cowen's wife and the mother of his children.
I am just happy to have connected my Cowen family to John Cowen (1754 RI - 1843 NY). There was a big gap in our knowledge just 2 generations back, but it has been filled in. I will have to be satisfied with that accomplishment.

Thanks again, and Happy New Year!
Marsha

Happy New Year! The short answer to your question is no Hannah Litchfield who married Isreal Cowing did not have a sister Deborah who married John Cowen. The long answer is that this has troubled Cowen/Cowing researchers for years.

The records of the First Congregational Church of Rochester list a Deliverance Cowen, was this the same person that George Randall shows as Deborah Litchfield?

The late Chester Cowen said: "I, for one, do not believe Deborah Litchfield was the correct wife for John Cowen, II. In the church records of Rochester, MA. I have recently learned that a Deliverance Cowing was a member of the church along with a number of his children. The second wife for John Cowen, II. was Desire (Hawes) Hatch and she was listed as Desire Cowing BUT I am sure Deliverance was not a Litchfield but of some other surname and this I am attempting to obtain in time."

I do not know if he ever found his answer, sadly he has passed away now.

The book "Litchfield Family in America" says the following on the subject:

Depend ANCE^ Litchfield {Lawrence'), second daughter and
third child of Lawrence' and Judith (Dennis) Litchfield, was
born in Scituate, where the record (only one of Lawrence's
children) is still legible on the town clerk's first book of vital
records : " Dependance the daughter of Larance Lechfeld was
Borne y^ 15 of Febuary 1646."

In 1672, by the will§ of Hester (Ester) Woodfield, Depend-
ance^ received ten shillings ; in 1649 she was remembered,
with her brother and sister, in the will of her grandfather,
William Dennis ;1| in 1678, she signed a paper in receipt of all
her interest in the estate of her brother. Experience^ Litchfield ;^
in 1683, William Peakes bequeathed** her thirty pounds and
" houserome and fiering soe longe as shee Liueth a single
woman;" in 1685, her mother, Judith Peakes, mentions her in
her will as unmarried.

It is possible that it was Dependance, called by DeaneJ|
" Deborah," who married, in 1687, John"" Cowen, son of John'
Cowen and widow Rebecca Man, his wife. If this was Depend-
ance^ instead of " Deborah," then she was about forty-one years."

In short; If John really did marry a Deborah Litchfield, she is not from Lawrence or any of his sons.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

Holli
She came to Western Australia as a
young woman and worked in service for a wealthy family in
Peppermint Grove where she met her husband- my grandfather-
My father didnt really know much about his mothers parents but always said they were very wealthy and that James Cowen would 'light his cigars with ten pound notes! But if this was so why did Sussanah cross the country as a young women to work as a servant. I would love to hear from you regarding what you know re James Cowen and his family
Regards Moya Miller

I am looking for confirmation or information relating to Mr. T.H. He was born in Lynn Regis, Norfolk, England, the son of Joseph Henry and Mary Elizabeth Cowen, in 1836, died in Oct. 1891 in Tasmania and was married to an Isabella from Scotland.

Any information that would clear up this mystery would be appreciated. You can reach me direct at jamesmgray@bigpond.com.
