Surnames: COWARDIN, BRANDT, LOVELACE
I am looking for any information on Emanuel &/or Clara Cowardin of Henrico Co., Va. or Richmond, Va. Looking for Clara's maiden name plus dates & places of births/deaths/marriage and same info on children. They were the parents of several children including Corinne (nee Cowardin) Brandt - wife of Graham, and Herbert Spencer Cowardin, Sr. (died 1957) who married Catherine Betty Lovelace (1912-1950) on Sept. 8, 1930.

There are actually several people with the same last name as you. Your family originates (in USA) in Maryland. However, the majority of Cowardins were based in Virginia. In Virginia, John Cowardin, who built a lovely plantation in the 1700's had a couple of sons. Peter G, William L., and James A. among others. William L Cowardin is my GGGG Grandfather. Peter G Cowardin went west. I would bet money that is who you are related to.

Cowardin is actually a very prestigious name in VA. James A Cowardin founded the Times Dispatch Newspaper in Richmond. Samuel Pendleton Cowardin was an accomplished scientist, musician, and city planner. He was noted as planning the East End of Richmond. There is even a major road in Richmond called Cowardin Avenue. There was also a Cowardin street but it was changed to R st to avoid confusion.

There is a Cowardin Jewelers in Richmond that is still very active.

Please feel free to look at my page. I have done extensive research on Cowardins. My grandmother, whom i was very close to was a Cowardin.

I am also related to the Cowardins of Council Bluffs, Iowa. (The poster above, scowardin, would be my second cousin.) It would be interesting to research and see if we are related to the Cowardins who came from Maryland and Virginia, since it doesn't seem to be a common surname.

My grandmother was a Cowardin. It is my understanding that all Cowardins are related. In my research, this has certainly been the case. Peter Cawardine came to Maryland from England/Ireland. Abraham Cowardin's son John Cowardin settled in Bath County, VA. It was his children who dispersed to various parts. Collin~Kentucy William Lewis Cowardin, James Andrew Cowardin, Elizabeth Cowardin all went to Richmond, Virginia. Peter G. went out west. I have tons of information on this family. Message me, I will be happy to share.
