James Coward Eng to Va born before 1660
Hello, I am looking for information about James Coward, born before 1660 in England. I know he married Mary Alloway in Va. around 1687/8 and had four children. I would like info on his immigration to Va. I understand he is listed in the Old Rappahannock Co. order book as having been "imported" by William Colston before 1688. Does anyone know the ship or port of entry and does the use of the word imported imply something? Any help is appreciated. thanks, Katie

We would all like to go beyond this point. However, it seems to be the end of the line. I would like to caution you about some false information that is floating around about a "Sir" William Coward and "Lady" Mohen. This was a false report that has been printed (and later retracted) however, people on the internet have promoted it as truth, without being able to prove it. The James Coward who was "Imported" was a school teacher and was brought to the US for that reason.

Re: James Coward Eng to Va born before 1660
I ran across a site "Notes on the Coward Family" Edited by Hylton Bayntun-Coward. In It he has a William Coward who first married Bridget Hall, daughter of Thomas Hall . William married second Lady Philippa Annesley, daughter of Arthur, Earl of Annesley, and relict of Charles, third Lord Mohun. In some of the info I have seen on the net it states the James' father was William II who married Lady Mohin. Would like to know if this is our James' father. I have the book "Coward-Cowart Chronicles" but it only goes back to James who married Mary Alloway.

Re: James Coward Eng to Va born before 1660
Sorry it has taken this long in answering. In the book"Coward-Cowart Chronicles" Benjamin Coward born 1737 was the son of James Coward and Elizabeth Griffin. It has Edward listed as Benjamin's brother. This Benjamin married Elizabeth Allday abt 1750. They had Benjamin born abt. 1759, James born abt. 1760 and Joshua born abt.1762. Not sure if this helps. Good Luck!

Re: James Coward Eng to Va born before 1660
At the time, a "credit" of tobacco was given to anyone who "imported" a useful and healthy settler to the Northern Neck of Virginia. I believe "imported" could be read as "sponsored" without being inaccurate.
Colston also arranged the marriage between Mary Alloway (relic of John Alloway) and James. After a few years in the Northern Neck James became undersheriff.
His descendants, Coward and Cowart, spread to NC, SC, GA, AL MS, TX and doubtless elsewhere.
I would love to find out more about the ship and port of entry myself. Good luck.

Well, I know I'm in Florida and I have reason to believe I'm a descendant, but I couldn't find much more information on the history beyond James Coward
