Jeremiah Cowan & Desire Green
I am looking for any information on Jeremiah Cowan b. abt. 1802 in Tipperary. It is believed he was the son of Thomas Cowan & an unknown Miss Gardner.
Apparently his family emigrated to Baltimore ca. 1809. He ended up in Canada and married Desire Green in Blenheim, Ontario on July 1st 1823. He died March 15th 1880 in Princeton, Ontario.
Any information would be a great help. Thank-you, Karen

Re: Jeremiah Cowan & Desire Green
Dear Karen, I'm Jeremiah Cowan's great great great great grandson. He settled Princeton Ontario. He married Desiree Green in 1823. He had 15 children. Their names were William, Thomas, Ann, Joshua, Susannah, Seth, Margaret, Edmond, Abigail, Charles, Matthew, Jeremiah, Mary, George and Caroline. Apparently the Cowan family still owns 200 acres of land in Princeton. He later married a widow named Fowler in 1874 and died in 1880. Hope this helps. I would love to know about his ancestors if you find anything. from James in Australia

Re: Jeremiah Cowan & Desire Green
Dear James,
I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner but I just came across this message and obviously missed it last year for some reason. I hope this will still reach you.
I can supply you with some information on Jeremiah but that line of the family is still somewhat of a mystery. I descend from a brother or cousin and we have several references to the cousins in Princeton and some photographs which I am currently trying to identify. I am specifically looking for information on his daughters Abigail and Caroline.
I have found that Caroline married John James Hamilton but know nothing about Abigail apart that she is noted in the 1852 census.
My curiosity arises from 1) some family notes about a Cowan relation with a daughter Abby & Carrie and 2) a photograph of a lady ca. 30 years old taken ca. 1867. On the back is writen, " To my friend and cousin Matthew, from Abbie Odele". Matthew Cowan is my gt-gt-grandfather and there are no Abigails or Abby's in his family nor that of the Cowan cousins in Halton. However, we know the Halton family, my Cowans from Cannington and the Princeton families were all related and this photo is taken in the same studio with the same backdrop as 2 of the Halton cousins. Of course this misled me to think she belonged to the Halton family but I have that line pretty much complete now and she doesn't.
I'm pretty sure she is the Abigail from Princeton and the note mentioning her younger sister Carrie (Caroline) help support this.
Anyway, I do have other information that you'd likely be interested in and suggest you send me an e-mail. I don't know if it is available if you click on my profile so I'll add it. Just change the "at" to @.
I'll hope to hear from you,
sincerely, Karen

I am just starting my family tree and was excited to find the names of Jeremiah's children. I am also looking for his ancestors in Ireland and I believe we go further back to Scotland. Re: Jeremiah Cowan & Desire Green
So great to learn of other descendants! I'm trying to get up to speed with my family history. One of Jeremiah's sons was Charles. Charles remained in Princeton, as did his son Frank. Frank had 2 boys of his own, the younger being Robert who is my Father. Jeremiah would be my great great grandfather. And I have add 3 (male) offshoots of my own!
Today I went to the family plot in the Princeton Cemetery with one of my 4 sisters and her 2 kids. My sister took some pictures while there which I hope to get copies of. Jeremiah, Deseree, Abbey, Charles, Frank, Esther were some of the names we saw. I'll need her photos to confirm full names and dates.
I'm happy to share more if others can do the same. :)

Re: Jeremiah Cowan & Desire Green
Hello,
I know a little about Jeremiah's ancestry and have been trying to learn more. My information comes mostly from family stories that were passed down. Jeremiah's father was Thomas Cowan who was at some point in charge of a prison in Baltimore, Maryland. Politically, he was a Tory. He and his wife, I don't know her name, died on their way to Canada during the War of 1812 (ca. 1812-1815).
Thomas's father was also named Jeremiah Cowan. He lived in Barrisokane, Tipperary, Ireland and his wife's maiden name was Gardiner. She died in 1819. I do not know where or her first name. Her father was a church official of some kind (my grandmother thinks he was a bishop), named Jeremiah Gardiner. He was born somewhere in Southern Ireland and was a postmaster in Barrisokane. His religion was Protestant.
I am hoping to learn more about this family. If anyone knows more about Jeremiah's ancestry or about his siblings/cousins and how they fit in, please let me know. Thanks!

Hello Karen,
I would be interested in learning more about the cousin/sibling of Jeremiah's that you descend from and how they fit in. Right now I don't have any information about cousins or siblings of Jeremiah's.

Greetings All I am also a descendent of Jeremiah Cowan through his 3rd son Joshua Green Cowan who came to Victoria, Australia and married Fanny Stack in 1855. They had 9 children. Their 3rd son was Thomas Jeremiah Cowan who married Lizzie May Reeves in 1892. They had 7 children of which their 5th was my grandmother - Cora Elizabeth Caraline Cowan. She married Raymond Arthur Wilkinson Buller in 1918. I have quite a bit more information of the Cowans which I would be pleased to share. Bruce bcroberts'at'bigpond.com
