Surnames: Covault, Bennett
Looking for ancestors of Isaac Newton COVAULT who came from Shelby County, OH, died at a hotel in Wellston, OH, in 1916, and was buried at Fletcher Cemetery in Miami Co, OH. Don't know who his parents were, but there were several Covaults in the Shelby-Miami area. Was reportedly a salesman for Edison Phonographic at the time of his death. He may have been the ex-husband of a cousin of mine, Elizabeth (Bennett) Covault. All help appreciated. Thanks

Have you found your connection yet? I have most of the Ohio Covualt families and dont see this one. IN Fletcher Cemetery is Isaac A and a Newton, but Newton bonr 1831 died 1903.
Also dont see this fellow in the 1880 census or 1900 or 1910. Are you sure about the facts?

Burial in Fletcher, Miami, Ohio

I can find no marriage record and given the 1880 census listing it seems he was born out of wedlock. I think the most likely ID of the father is Isaac Newton Covault (1853-1933) born in Green, Shelby, Ohio and moved to Poweshiek County, Iowa in 1876 where he married Catherine Florence Jones. There is, however, no mention (e.g. in his obit) of the elder I. N. Covault leaving behind an illegitimate son when he moved to Iowa.

I have a photo in an album belonging to my great-grandfather Freeman Jones (brother of Catherine), taken by G. S. Elwell of Toledo, Ohio, which I think is likely to be of Elizabeth Ford Bennett (I can find no other likely candidates in my family). I've been trying to put a name to the face - hence my research.

I have attached the photo and newspaper clippings noted above to Elizabeth Ford Bennett in my family tree on Ancestry (The Raintree County Atlas) at http://trees.ancestry.com.au/tree/73831579/person/4828329711...

Yes, that confirms the info I have except for a few of the earlier dates which I suspected might have been a little off. Catherine/Katherine Florence Jones was my great grand aunt and her brother Freeman, my g-grandfather, lived on a farm adjoining the I N Covault family in Poweshiek Co, Iowa.

The younger Isaac Newton Covault (1876-1916) is the mystery. Wm Hamilton Covault's brother was in the right place and right age to be the Isaac Newton Covault named in the birth register as his father, but that is obviously only circumstantial evidence. It would mean the elder Isaac N. left Ohio for Iowa around the time of the baby's birth if not (a little while) before. It seems odd that a child born out of wedlock as implied by the 1880 census listing for Elvira Wiles has the father's name. Maybe it sounded better than the truth.

Re the photo - I have found more info in city directories for the photographer that point to a date 1889-1893, so that is obviously too early for it to be Elizabeth Ford Bennett.

You wouldn't happen to know of any photos of Isaac (Wm Hamilton's brother)? It seems likely that he might be in one of the photos in my great-grandfather's album.
