Dear Lyne:

I was just going over some older information and came across this thread that we wrote a few years ago.

Apparently I was busy with my kids at the time, as I don't believe I did anything on your line. I wasn't sure if anyone's contact information was still current so I thought I would write through the message boards.

I would still love to know more about your ARBOUR connections. For starters . . . What is your dad's name?

Thanks for getting back in touch!

Shannon :)
My great-great grandmother was Marie Amanda Lanclos Courville. I'm sorry I've never heard that they adopted a child. They had 4 children: Rosa (my great-grandmother married Oscar Zerangue); Arthur; Leonce Michel & Henry Gabriel Courville. Leonce died at the age of 18 supposedly from a hunting accident. I have very few pics of them if you'd like I can email to you if you contact me. We called them Memare & Pepare Frank. They are buried in Arnaudville & I know exactly where the grave is at. Not sure is Leonce is buried in Arnaudville or Leonville. I have spreadsheets on the Lanclos'. I have on the Zerangue side. Will work on the Courville side. If you want to ever contact me, please do at my email address: bonniel@iss-snub.com.

Bonnie Lanclos

Denise was my (grandfather) Helaire Theriot's aunt (my Mom's Dad). My grandfather's Mom & Taunt Denise were sisters. There were at 15 kids born to their parents. Taunt Denise married Bill Courville. I haven't really started working on the Courville family tree but I will. My Dad also had a grandmother that was a daughter to Francois "Frank" Courville & Marie Amanda Lanclos. My Dad was James Lanclos but passed away 41 years ago, I was only 14 years old when he passed. Coming back to Taunt Denise, I went to the funeral home when she passed away. She was in Cecilia, LA. I have info on the Latiolais side of the family (she was a Latiolais before she married Bill). I do hope you contact me. My email address is bonniel@iss-snub.com.
Bonnie Lanclos

Dear Carol
some thing that jumped in my mind is the date of his arrival in NewZealand. I do not know much about your Michael...but in 1837/38 there was a war sorts here, between Ontario and Quebec, it was a political thing. The outcome, some of the people were in prison, and if they were not redeemed by their families, they were deported and not allowed back into the country. I do not know the names of all these people deported, at that time, but he could be one of them.
also you must find out if he was a Courville dit deBilly or a dit St.Louis.
Yes, I have checked his records that covered most of South Louisiana. For that date of birth the only one recorded is that son belonging to Pierre Courville and Marie Eugenie West. Hebert's books supports his wife Louise Taylor (Teller) and all subsequent children of the two being born in Louisiana primarily St. Landry Parish. Since the census records confirm the Hebert catholic records I cannot figure out how he could be one in the same in Texas (Polk County) married to Sarah Hudson unless he was a traveling bigamist! I am searching. The earliest record of that name in Polk County was his land purchased in 1847 right after it broke off from part of Liberty County. I have found both marriage records to Sarah J. Hardin and Sarah Hudson. The names in the Polk County census are 1850 - Caldwell and 1860 Calwell. By 1870 he is deceased and his wife Sarah (2nd marriage) shows up as Colevil. Any ideas welcome!

Jannine, I can't find you on Facebook. Here is some of your lineage. Your Grandfather John was born Jean Baptiste Courville to Sosthene Courville and Marie Alexandrine Green Courville. Our familial connection is through Marie Alexandrine. Her mother was Agnes Charlot Green Butler. Agnes was married to Thomas Green Jr. Thomas Green was born in 1868 and was shot dead in 1897. Thomas was a son of my Great-Great-Great Grandparents Thomas Sr. and Louisa Green. Your Great Grandfather Sosthene died in 1917 of pneumonia. I really would like to know who your Grandmother Avia's parents were.

Alexi is mentioned and he went down with a brother. (sorry don't know which one) they were from the deBilly family that came to settle in Champlain Quebec.

I could not find either of them in the HBC archives employees records. Basil is there with information that has already been widely shared.

Has anyone looked into the Louis Courville Sr. that married into the Salish Kootenai Tribe. Born 1828. Many descendants. Could he be a brother of Basil?

I will wait for your reply.
I've found where I got the name Jean Baptiste Courville. The history column in the Polk County Enterprise on 25 Mar 2004 had a story about the family of William Givens Hudson and Mary Mimone Allen. There it says that their daughter Sarah Ann Hudson married Jean Baptiste Courville who owned 320 acres in the Robert Whitlock Survey east of Leggett in partnership with William Givens Hudson. It also says that both of Sarah's husbands were buried in the Oates Cemetery east of Leggett.

Have you checked Rev. Donald Hebert's "Southwest Louisiana Records" to see if there are any records of a second Jean Baptiste Courville?
Have you found any records that actually have the name Jean Baptiste Courville in Polk County, Texas? I put that name in my records years age when researching John R. Oates family, but the only source I listed was the 1860 census which has Jno. Baptiste Colveil, Calveil or Calwell (depending on who did the index). More recently, I was researching Jack Wilkinson/Wilkerson who married Adaline Courville. At that time I found the death certificate of Mary Pauline Rice which has her father as John Batise Courville.

There is a marriage in the Polk County Marriage Book B for B. Colvele and Sarah J. Hardin dated 2 Jun 1850. On the 1850 census in Polk County, Bates and Sarah Caldwell are listed next to widow Martha Harden (66). Could Bates Caldwell be Baptiste Courville?

When I started working on the family, I thought Jean's, (Possibly called John by others since Jean is French for John),name was Jean B. Courville. On my grandfathers records, it is spelled Courville.
I'm glad to know that Mary Pauline's record lists him John Batise Courville. I know they lived in Polk County and the only record I've pulled up is his military record.
It IS possible he was a bigamist with another wife and family in Louisiana. He was born in Louisiana. There was a Jean Baptiste in Louisiana with matching years of birth and death. If he was the same man, and I hate to think he was, he made it home for census. There are records for this man in Louisiana. It's been hard to find records for our Jean which might lend credability to someone with a double life.
On my grandfather's, (Wade Hudson Morrison), death certificate, his mother's maiden name is listed as Courville.
On the Texas Death record of one of Lou's children, his mother's maiden name is given as Covelle.
Another bible record shows the spelling Culveille.
It's a mystery at least now. I keep hoping that one of the descendants will come up with something concrete. Otherwise, JBC is a mystery. I would love to hire someone who actually knew how to find out if I had the $$$.
When my father was alive, the grandchildren all went together and bought a marker for Lou, (Louisa) because there never had been one. I'm not sure which grandchild ordered it but spelled her name Lou Colville Morrison. He had wanted it changed but it didn't ever get done and I guess won't.
Just in our family records, I've seen so many variations of the spelling
Thank you so much for that information!
I had started to think my information was wrong.
It's strange I can't find any census information for my gt gt grandfather.
I have found his military information and he served in the Confederacy with Oats. I'm sure if they weren't before the war, they were afterwards. William Givens Hudson was Sarah Hudson's father. I didn't know her middle name was Ann.
Are you descended from this family also?
Thank you again.
Carol

I just looked at the Polk County Texas Marriage Book B again. In the "C's" there is a:
Curvell, Batiste to Sarah Hudson On May 1,1853 Page-43
I think this is an accurate record!!! Since there were two fellows and wives with similar names, it has really confused things. I still am not any closer to finding Batiste's parents, etc. but will try to just stick with this spelling and see what happens.
Thanks for ALLL your help.!

Eight rows up from them is:
Colvele, B. to Sarah Hardin On June 2, 1850 Page 15. This couple may have been confusing some of the folks out there.

My grandmother's mother's name was Marguerite St.Jule dit Aveline, and my grandmother's grandmother's name was Marguerite Denys. Joseph Courville and Marguerite St.Jule were married in Montecello Quebec, and were both adults...Joseph Courville and Marguerite Denys were married in Grenville, Quebec, and were both adults. This means for Joseph and Marguerite Deny there are no family only friends as witnesses. I am trying to go back to Jean Baptiste deBilly who married into the Vien familly.
The Courville family was originally the DeBilly family. They had a country seat in Courville-sur-Eure (Eure is a river), in France and another in the Bourg St.Louis in Paris. in the 1700's there were two brothers living in Courville sur Eure. I have a sketchy lineage of them in France. If you wish I can send it to you. Just email me at n.dubois@telus.net .

Hope to let you know, is that the Courville family in France went by the name of DeBilly, and two brothers lived in the town of Courville-sur-Eure, about 10 or so miles from Paris. Another brother lived in the district of St.Louis in Paris. I have more info though not lots, further back. If you email me I will be happy to give you what I have. After the 3rd generation in Canada I am missing about 5 generations between the 3rd and my grandmother's grandfather. So it's still not complete. Hope to hear from you soon.
Re: Courville Families

It's been a long time since I put a message here. I got side-tracked on other lines in my family.
I'm back on Courville.
I still haven't found any will or land records on my Jean Baptiste Courville married to Sarah Hudson. I did find a military record though.
There is a J. B. Courvill that served with COMPANY F, Twenty-Second Texas Infantry, C.S.A. It was organized March 10, 1862 in Polk CO, TX by Rev. J. A. Scruggs. The unit became part of Walker's Texas Division. John R. Oats is a second lietenant. John R. Oats will marry Sarah Hudson after JB's death. They must have been friends, I'm thinking. Anyway, Company F fought at Young's Point, LA June 7 1863, Against the advance of the Federal Army under Gen Bnaks from Franklin, LA (March 14-26, 1864); Natchitoches, LA (March 31, 1864, Wilson's Farm, LA, (April 7, 1964)Savine Cross Roads Mansfield, LA (April 8 1864), Pleasant Hill, LA (April 9, 1864)doperations against Gen. Steele from Little Rock to Camden, ARK including engagements at Mark's Mills, ARK (April 15, 1864 and Jenkins Ferry, ARK, (April 30, 1864). So, I guess my question is:
Did your J. B. Courville serve the Confederacy? If he did, this might be another matching point or perhaps verify that he was a different JBC than mine.
