Hi,

I am looking for an Alfred Court m. an Emma Mariah Hollington (or Hollings/Collings/Collington? from poss. Redditch or Manchester Eng. My Alfred was called "Shorty" and someone has said the family owned a pub thereabouts. Alfred & Emma Maria had at least these children - John William (called Will or Willie) b. cir. 1887 and James, b. ? They all (4?) came to US, Brooklyn NY area around 1900 or so.

Any help grately appreciated.

Do you have this info already?
Alfred Court Licensed Victuller of Redditch Road, Studley, Warwick. Aged 29 in 1891
Wife Emma aged 28 in 1891
Son aged 2 in 1891
Probably nothing to do with your family but there was an Emma Maria Court with a son Alfred in the Croydon area (south west of London

Hello John...

I think this may in fact be who I am looking for. Please send me any info you have on this Alfred, wife Emma & son. Also, do you have info on Emma Maria?

Thank you so much. I had given up on this for a while.

I think that this is Alfred's earlier family. They appear to have had money, at least while the Father in law was alive, as they had a house servant.

57 Prospect Row, Redditch 1851
Age Born about Birth Place Occupation
John Court 29 1823 Redditch Fish hook maker
Jane Court 24 1828 Bromsgrove Fish hook bender
John William Court 7 1844 Redditch Scholar
Anna Maria Court 5 1846 Redditch Scholar
Emma Court 2 1849
Ellen Court 1 Mo 1851
Joseph Manley Butcher & Father in Law
Also had a house servant

53 Ipsley Street, Redditch 1861

Age Born about Birth Place Occupation
John Court 38 1823 Redditch Fish hook maker
Jane Court 33 1828 Bromsgrove Fish hook bender
Emma Court 12 1849 Redditch Fish hook bender
Ellen Court 10 1851 Redditch Scholar
Selina Court 7 1854 Redditch Scholar
Harriet Court 9 Mo 1860 Redditch

Living at 137 George Street, Redditch 1871

Age Born about Birth Place Occupation
John Court 48 1823 Redditch Fish hook maker
Jane Court 43 1828 Bromsgrove Fish hook bender
Selina Court 17 1854 Redditch Needle Maker?
Alfred Court 8 1863 Redditch Scholar
Frank Court 6 1865 Redditch Scholar
William Court 1 1870 Redditch

No trace of John in the 1881 census or after. Assume he died between 1871 and 1881.

John William may have gone to the USA in 1861 on the Kangaroo

If John William did go to the USA then parents and younger members of the family may have followed later as they seem to disappear from census records after 1871

Sorry the tables or tabs get pushed out of alignment.I can send the info in MS Word format if you like.

If you could let me have a gedcom and or jpg of your family tree I would appreciate it as I have a number of contacts with families in this general area.

Dear John (WOW that is strange, never written a 'Dear John' before)

First of all, thank you for your help... you seem to be the one consistant source & reply for information for me, and I am grateful.

Unfortunately, the only true resource of info I have is my elderly Aunt Emma, who has alzheimers...she is the oldest child of John William ("Willie") & Winefred (nee) Gallagher.
"Willie" is the son of Alfred "Shorty" Court & Emma (Moriah??) Hollings, Collings?? from Redditch area. This is all I know. I do also know that "Willie" came to the US (Brooklyn, Lee Avenue) in late 1890's or early 1900's and married Winefred Gallagher. They had many children, named Edward, Catherine, Robert, Marie, Geraldine, Thomas, William, James, Alfred, Dennis, & Michael Court

I do see other Court families with similiar names, and understand that 1st borns are named after fathers, 2nd borns named after eldest brothers, etc. I am just trying to make some connection somewhere.

Maybe I just do not have enough information to continue my search properly??

Thanks...

Valerie Court

Hi Valerie,

Never written a dear john letter! Makes me wonder whether all your ex boyfriends are still waiting on the corner of the street somewhere.

I will circulate your info amongst my email contacts in the next few weeks. You can contact me directly through the "Court Genealogy" link on this page http://www.courtgen.com/

Hi Valerie
Have just picked up your query via the Courtonline Society - I think I may have found your John Court b 1823 in the 1881 Census. From Ancestry, search the 1881 Census for Court, born 1823, birthplace parish Redditch. There are 2; J. Court is the one who most closely matches your man. He is living in Ipsley Street. Maybe he left his wife?
Happy hunting! Regards
Niki

Hello...

Thank you for replying to my inquiry, however my John was born around 1887. He had a brother named James, his parent were Alfred "Shorty" Court & Emma.

Thank you again, and if you come across any of the above mentioned names, please write again!

Sincerely,

Valerie Court

Dear John,

We have spoken in the past... I do now believe this Alfred & Emma are mine! I found in the 1910 Fed. Census in NY Alfred age 48, wife Emma, age 48, William (their son) age 22, Winifred (Wm's wife) age 19, and William, age 2 (Wm & Winifreds son)

If you have any more info on them, please email me! TY (YAY I have gotten somewhere!)

Whoops, sorry Valerie I just nodded off there for a couple of seconds. Too much time at the National Archives, British Library, etc..
I assume you are refering to the family who spanned three censuses. I have no more on them at the moment but I will email the Courts that I have with a Redditch connection.
At a guess he is the same John Court as the one in this family:
John Court 45
Hannah Court aged 50
Joseph Court 20
John Court 15
Mary Court 15
Henry Court 10
Harriett Court 9
Living in Ipsley Street, Redditch in the 1841 census. John and family lived in Ipsley Street in a later census and there is still an Ipsley Street in Redditch.
I have noticed that there is a Joseph Court born c1820 in Redditch on GenesReunited. Let me know if you do not have a GenesReunited account.
