So glad you're still posting.

I came across a DNA project that involves the males of every derivative of Counts/Countz/Koontz/Koonce, etc. They were trying to see which lines are actually compatible through DNA. The problem is that they don't decipher the results very well; at least for myself, a layperson, to comprehend. I will send you a link on this.

I don't know what documentation the descendant who contacted you has but I would very much like to see anything not merely recitation of something that was on the internet. Why isn't there more scanning of actual documents that could be posted?

In your response you mention that you found a record with John Countz and Charles Kizer. Can you share that or at least where you found it?

Do you have this document: "the record lists them as AOL from muster by their British Captain", and "it is interesting that they are together as british soliders."

I will send you the DNA link tomorrow.

Thanks for your reply.

It is now August 2015. Don't know if you are still reading these boards. I just returned from a Counts reunion and a Rasnick/Rasnake reunion who both claim ancestral connections to John Counts of Glade Hollow. I visited his grave site. I just began doing research and the first thing that struck me was exactly what you said are the different spelling of the names, the different explanations of why (German ancestry, that's the way it was done, they made the German spelling more English) and the supposed connections being the same. It is so confusing that I am beginning to wonder if the connections are accurate. I, too, am searching for more definite proof (like deed records, etc.). Going back so far, to the late 1700s is problematic. I don't know if there is anything much to be found. Let me know if you are still on the board and have learned anything since then.

Stanwick is my great, great grandfather. His granddaughter Mary Cassie (buried at Hays Cemetery) is my grandma. Stanwick had some land dealings in South Carolina and moved to Blount County at some point after the 1820 census was taken. He's still listed in Newberry County (along with a hoard of the Counts family) at that time. I've managed to find random land records and court documents about him (including the incident with his first wife) in the Heritage Room at the Charleston Co Public Library. Working with the ladies there, we seem to have narrowed his father to either Robert or John Hays. Not really much help, as you couldn't throw a rock in this area at that time and not hit a Robert or John! His mother is still a mystery to me. I spent many a decoration day growing up driving down to Hayden to put flowers on graves and visit with family. My only real memory is of dad's Aunt Ella sitting in a lawn chair in the shade, holding court with all of us kids and telling stories about how things used to be!

Re: Catherine Counts (1790-1834

HI Vicki,
Stanwick is elusive indeed. He showed up in Hayden (Blount Co.) AL about 1820 buying land. All of my research over years of collecting began at Hays Cemetery, Hayden AL. My great-grandmother was Argie Jemima Huffstutler Hays she lived until I was 25. Her daughter, my grandmother, Katherine Hays Turner is still alive. The Counts and Huffstutlers were connected in a 1700's marriage and were Rhineland Germans that came in through Maryland and settled in the new world eventually moving south into SC. Catherine was the daughter of the Fellers-Counts marriage. Some reports state that Stanwick beat Catherine to death in their barn. I do not know if that is true. I know he re-married in Decemeber in the year Catherine died. Soon after, Catherine and Stanwick's only daughter moved to Arkansas amid a scandal for that day according to some sources. Judy Spaulding has a good bit of information available on the internet and there is a great deal of documentation of the family in Hayden since there was so many of them. Stanwick was very giving after the Civil War to the widows and children of soldiers. His sons fought too. He is documented in George Huffstutler's Revolutionary War Pension Application. Before he comes to Blount County, he is a mystery!
I have about 1,000 pages of the Counts(Cuntz/Kuntz) information created by C. C. Counts of Mississippi completed by a variety of Counts descendants some years ago. Nicholas and EVen Counts had the following children:
John Counts , B: ca 1774 Orange Co., NC; "died possibly 1820s, Lawrence Co., TN; md. Rachel Criner
William Counts, B: ca 1775 Orange Co., NC; "death not known but may have been Madison Co., AR; md. Annie Bean
George Counts, B: ca 1776 Orange Co., NC;
Mary Counts, B: ca 1778-1780; still alive in 1860; md. Henry Bowen
Isaac Counts, B: ca 17801782, Orange Co., NC; D: 1840-1845, Madison Co., AR; md. Martha McElhaney
David Counts, B: ca 1786, Orange Co., NC; D: 1861. Trigg Co., KY; md. (1) Wliz. Howell; (2) Sarah Spoon
Margaret Counts, B: Feb 1786, Orange Co., NC; D: 1856, Bradley Co., TN; md. Zachariah Keith
Catherine Counts, B: 1790, Hawkins Co., TN; D: 1817, Grainger Co., TN; md. Warham Easley
Nicholas Counts III (my line), B: 1791, Hawkins Co., TN; D: 1841, Randolph Co., IL; md. Martha Hammers
Sarah Counts, B: 1794, Grainger Co., TN; D: 1883, Grainger Co., TN; md. David Shieds Noe
Aaron Counts, B: 1797, Grainger Co., TN; D: 1878, buried in Mayberry Cemetery near Farmington Co., MO; md. Ruth Hammers
Henry Counts, B: ca 1800, Grainger Co., TN

"Nicholas Counts died sometime between the date the 1838 will was written and early September when the will was probated. [Aug 16-31, 1838). Eve Counts survived him and or some time as she was still alive and living with the family of her youngest son, Henry Counts, in Jefferson Co., TN"

I have a transcript of the Will of Nicholas Counts.

I have copies of the original estate papers for Nicholas Counts III from IL and some original land grants in MO for the Counts. Aaron and Nicholas took there families to the "west;" Aaron settled near today's Farmington, MO and Nicholas, in Randolph Co., IL. Nicholas III died shortly after moving there; his widow Martha Hammers Smith then moved her family to the Farmington area to be closer to her sister, Ruth Hammers Counts and wife of Aaron Counts. I have visited the cemeteries there and traced all the descendants in that area.

I am always glad to share information. Since there are so many pages, I cannot give all on line. I would appreciate any response from this Counts group.
Ray Smith (E. Tennessee; near the Counts TN settlement)

Oh my goodness you have done such a wonderful job on this family! I would love to link to your family but don't think I can. My James L. Counts, Coon, Coons, Coonts, Koontz, Kuhns...he couldn't write his name and it is spelled so many ways. His parents are both born in PA and that is why we can't link. My James L. Was for a fact born in VA somewhere I just don't know where on May 16, 1807. Moved to Parke County, Indiana then Ozark-Douglas County, MO in 1835 with wife Elizabeth Noble and two sons Austin and Clark. The had another son Daniel on the way from Indiana to Missouri. Austin and Clark died in Civil War but James L. lived. The three signed in as Counts at that time. http://www.angelfire.com/ia/CoontsFamilyFiles/Coonts.html is a old site of mine. Everything is documented but the birthplace of James L. And it is for a fact in VA I just don't know where in VA. Any ideas where to look? I enjoyed reading your stuff, you did such a wonderful job on it!

Hi,

I am trying to research the family of William Counts (b. abt 1775) who married Sarah Freeman in 1804 in Rutherford Co. TN. William was the son of Nicholas Counts II who had moved to Grainger Co. TN in the late 1700s.

In 1805 when William and Sarah's son George Counts was born, they apparently were living in the area of Rutherford Co. that became Bedford Co. TN in 1807.

In 1810 or 1812 William Counts moved his family to Missouri, probably in a wagon train of neighbors who moved to the Cape Girardeau district in 1810 and then, after the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812 hit that area of MO, they moved on up to the New Tennessee Settlement in Ste. Genevieve Co. in the fall of 1812.

William and Sarah raised their family in the Saline township of Ste. Genevieve Co. between 1812 and 1832 when, according to descendents of their oldest son George, they moved to Independence Co. AR along with George, his wife Malinda Tong and their young children. Around 1838, George moved his family to Van Buren Co. AR where George farmed and took on civic offices in the county. Around 1850 George left his family in AR and joined the Gold Rush to CA. After a year or so, George returned to AR and spent a year or so preparing to take back to CA his wife, younger children and whichever of his older/married children wanted to go. Around 1852 George and Malinda moved to Mariposa Co. CA and remained there the rest of their lives.

Unfortunately George's descendents do not know what happened to William, his wife Sarah and their other children after they left Missouri, except that apparently William died and was buried near his brother Isaac Counts in Madison Co. AR. When William's father Nicholas Counts II died in TN around 1839, Isaac was dead but William apparently was still alive. However, William and Sarah have not been found in the 1840 Census in AR or later, indicating William and Sarah probably died between 1840 and 1850.

I was searching at www.familysearch.org for Counts born in MO between 1810-1830 who lived in AR between 1832-1880 and found that there was a Richard Counts b. 1812 MO and living with his family in Independence Co. AR in 1850. His children had all been born in AR and the oldest was 14 indicating he had been in AR at least since 1836. In addition, also listed in the 1850 Census for Independence Co. AR, there was a Mary Counts (b. abt 1821 in MO) living in the household of Gideon Tucker and his wife Sarah (b. abt 1817 MO) who likely was Mary's older sister. To me, these Counts seem likely candidates for siblings of George Counts.

I Googled Richard Counts of Independence Co. AR and found this series of postings. I was wondering if you had found out any more about the ancestry of Richard Counts and if he was connected to William Counts, son of Nicholas Counts II?

Thanks for any help you can give me,
Lynn

This would have to be my great grandfather, unless it's an odd coincidence. My great grandfather was the Pastor of Kimberly CoG. Unfortunately, my grandfather, his son, John McKinney, has passed, and was a great "story teller" so I don't know much before William.

If you are a member of ancestry.com you will find a marriage record for Charles E Counts and Ollie Stogdale in Carter County Mo (his last name shown as Counter- but enlarging the record shows Counts)- license issued 4/18/1900 and mrd 4/20/1900. Her mother gave consent but name not shown on license - might be on record though. Charles and Ollie shown as from Reynolds Co. You didn't give your father's name, but found 1920 census for Edson Griggs, wife Olla, newborn Clayton Griggs, and 2 step-sons of Edson - Howard Counts 3 3/12 and not named step-son age 18. (Was either Shannon or Reynolds Co - forgot). Edson died 10/22/45 and Olla (Ollie?) still living - may have remarried. - Above just random thoughts and leads.

John, did anyone ever answer you? I am a descendant of Jacob W. Counts and Salina Thigpen through their daughter Margarette Caroline (Callie). Jacob W's father was John (b 1795/SC; d aft 1860/MS) & Mary Elizabeth Avery (b 10/2/1801/SC; d aft 1860/AL) Counts. One researcher said John's nickname was "Carpenter John". He is listed in one census as a "shingle maker". Their other children were Henry M, John P, Andrew & Elizabeth. There was possibly another female born between Andrew & Elizabeth. I have not proven that Mary Elizabeth b 1801 was indeed an Avery, but others have. As to who John Counts' father was, I have narrowed it down to two possibilities.

Hello Kathy! Can we communicate regarding the Counts?? I would really love to. I descend from Callie Counts and Barney McKinney and am having to now figure out this mystery. I've done lots of work and have lots of info. As a child, I was always looking at Callie's gravesite on Decoration Day, and Mom always explained that she was my Great Grandmother, but there was a real mystery in her marriage(?) to Barney McKinney. Thanks!

In re-reading the posts that apply to Barney McKinney and Callie Counts, we that came from this line all need to correspond.
Christopher Counts and Mary Bishop Counts are my great-great grandparents. There is a error in one of their children's name. "Col" is actually Eva. Somewhere down the line it was transposed. Eva was born 1857 in Kentucky. She married John Bush and they had 5 or 6 children; one of which is my grandfather "Everett Mills Bush". George Washington Counts was also married like 3 times. If anyone has any family history I would appreciate the knowledge.

In my Mullins genealogy I have Nancy Mullins and Hiram Cantrell having a daughter named Arminda Cantrell. And after Arminda's name is Stepchild. Arminda was born April 4, 1850 in Pike Co., Ky and died Nov. 19, 1914 in Wise Co., VA. She was married to William Cantrell and after he died she married Isham Mullins. She had children by both men. By having stepchild after her name I am wondering which one is her step parent. Is it Nancy Mullins or Hiram Cantrell. If her mother is Nancy then maybe she is an Elswick but if Cantrell is her father then who is her mother? I have the names of her children by both men.
John "of Glade Hollow" COUNTS - CUNTZE - KOUNTZ

To all COUNTS - CUNTZE - KOUNTZ,

I am a descendant of Philip KOUNTZ, son of John "of Glade Hollow" COUNTS - CUNTZE - KOUNTZ etc. and his wife Mary Magdeline UNKNOWN (possibly SUMMERS).

Philip's surname is written as KOUNTZ in the Bible of his daughter Elizabeth KOUNTZ Carter. The surname is spelled consistently as such in our line. I note that in no record I am aware of is John's son Philip recorded as "Counts".

However, we know that Philip's father is the John "COUNTS" who later moved to Glade Hollow, Russell Co., VA.

I would like to begin a discussion of the "facts" about John "of Glade Hollow" COUNTS - CUNTZE - KOUNTZ etc. and see more actual documentation on his line and his wife, and hopefully his parents.

The descendants of John KOONTZ - COUNTS AKA: Elder John KOONTZ who married Elizabeth BAKER and had four children have insisted that "THEIR" John is the son of Johannes (John) Counts (Cuntze) and Anna Elizabetha "Catherine" Stoever, but these parents are also given as the parents or "OUR" John of Glade Hollow.

I would like to call on all descendants of both men to help resolve this problem. FACTS PLEASE!!!

Thanks,

Sharon Lemkuil
d/o Jacks (living female)
d/o Williams (female line)
d/o Carter (female line)
d/o Carter (male line)
s/o Elizabeth KOUNTZ Carter
d/o Philip KOUNTZ and Anna KISER - KAYSER
s/o John "of Glade Hollow" COUNTS - CUNTZE - KOUNTZ and Mary Magdeline

Easter is part of the Counts family that I am. Do you or anyone have any photo's of her. I am also trying to find out where my Grandfather was buryed at. His name was Charles Edward Counts Born July 4th 1878, Ellington, Mo. Some say he died in Joplin Mo. But I can find no grave. I know the date of Death is wrong. It says 1916. My father--his son--told me he was 12 years old when his father died. My father was born in 1914. Also, I can find nothing on Ollie Stogsdill his wife, and mother of my father. Some in the family tell me she was illegitimate therefore I won't find anything on her. Can you tell me anything about her. Who were her parents? any brothers or sisters. Where did they come from. Thank you.
