I am looking for information on Coulters, particularly John. My family traces back as John Coulter was married to Mary in Northern Ireland. His son John married to Sarah McKeag came to WI. His son John was married to Sophia Spoerl. His son John was married to Clara Ramthum - these are my great-grandparents.

Will...My Coulter's trace to Templepatrick, County Down around late 1600's to early 1700's. Eleanor Coulter then immigrated to Sussex, Deleware with her 5 or 6 sons in the early 1700's. Do you have any knowledge of this line? Is "Coulter from Northern Ireland 1735" a book? Thanks...Richard

Another Coulter researcher has indicated to me that my John Coulter, born 1750 PA was connected to this family. I have never seen documentation to support this. John married Mary Semple about 1770 and migrated to Greenbrier valley in VA by 1780. Do you have any clues?

Kerry, thank you for your reply. My mother was Helen Lindsay Coulter. I can remember her saying some of her relations had worked in the area of Anaghanoon. Sorry I have no other details.

THIS IS THE COULTER LINE I AM FOLLOWING CAN YOU PLEASE HELP

David Coulter b.1793,Kildrum Parish,Cavan CDounty, Ireland & wife Susanna Craig,b.1895, Monesk,County Cavan together with their sons: Samuel b. 1824 Carballyquill,Cavan;George Thomas b.1826, Cavan;David Jr. b. 1830, Cavan;John b. 1832 Cavan immigrated to Canada in 1834.e Mid 1870's, George and his older sons William, David, & John E. , together with daughter Ann Jane (as cook / housekeeper) started north to locate new farms. They probably took passage on a ship that was traveling North which stopped at Bruce Mines, Ontario. Thence by a ship, probably called the Kate Marks, which plied between Bruce Mines and Marksville (later renamed Hilton Beach), to St. Joseph's Island, where George's brother David Jr. had purchased an existing farm/ homestead called "Liza's House" from Allen Wilfred Rains who had just purchased a sizable section of land at the southern end of Sugar Island , Michigan.
Samuel the older brother, also located a homestead on the property 3 lots north of his brother David's farm. George & family more than likely helped Sam raise his barn which has 1878 scribed in it's gable. These Coulter farms are located just north of Richard's Landing, and across the St. Marys River from Neebish Island, Bruce Township, Chippewa County, Michigan.
George undoubtly had crossed the river and scouted out a farm in Bruce Twp. about 9 miles south of Sault Ste Mariee, Michigan. George then filed an intent to become a U.S. Citizen in Sault Ste Mariee, Michigan (Port of Entry to the U.S.A.) dated 1878 and moved in.

About the same time, George's Uncle William & George's brother John, with their families together with George's pregnant wife: Catherine & their small children crossed Lake Huron to Port Austin, Huron County, Michigan where they settled.
George's son George Thomas Jr. was born in Huron County, Michigan, November 7, 1876. Another son Harry Earl (Henry) was also born in Huron County, Nov 12, 1878. We have not been able to document the birth of these two boys. The above dates were obtained from their U.S. Army service records (Both boys served during the Spanish American War.

Hi Richard, I have the line you're asking about. Eleanor (Torbett) was married to James Coulter. She was born abt
1676 in Templepatrick,Ire., but James was born in Scot. abt. 1665. My search says Lanarkshire but I can't vouch for accuracy. They had 6 kids. Joseph-John-Charles-Samuel-William and (James) my line. Their father was Nathaniel, he was born abt. 1627 He had Michael-Mary-John-James and Robert. If you have this information by now, please disregard, and good luck. Bob Coulter

Hi Richard glad this helped you. Sorry I can't say where I found the information on Eleanor. I have a bad habit of finding things and not remembering where I found it. I can't remember how many leads I went through before I found her. Her dads name is John born abt. 1650. Guessing in Ire. also. As I mentioned before, please don't take all this as fact. Would you know for a fact who the father of John Coulter is?(abt 1750) I have him as James born abt.1700. Son of Eleanor. I'm thinking I'm wrong.

Hello Bob - Well there are so many John's and James' it can get really confusing. The James you are referring to (James born abt. 1700), I show as one of Eleanor's sons, married to ??? (I do not have her name). I show that they had a son named Andrew, but must admit I don't have much info or source data there.

Hi Richard, I have the info on James. He was married to Margaret"Peggy"Hutson born abt.1706 in Scot. Son John was married to Mary Semple lived in Pa.until the trip to Greenbrier Co.,WVa. Trying to figure out why and when John left De. for Pa. Seems most of the Coulters came through Va. to now WVa. Do you have any info on Eleanor when she came to De.,and who she was with? Bob

Thanks for the information on James Coulter and Margaret Hutson. Gives me a clue as to where to look for some source documentation.

As far as the migration from DE to PA, this seems to run in the family as I have quite a few Coulters making the move. Particularly to Bedford County PA and surrounding areas. E.G. Thomas Coulter (s/o William Coulter, s/o Eleanor) was the sheriff of Bedford County PA. The genealogy gets a little tricky because new counties were being created from pieces of existing counties. So a particular family may show up in records of one county, then 5-10 years later show in another county, when in fact they haven't moved at all.

In regards to your last inquiry, information on Eleanor:

Eleanor appears to be the progenitor of the Coulter line in the new world. She is the first Coulter to appear in Sussex County DE records in about 1719. She was a widow and records show she had 6 grown children: John, James, Samuel, Charles, Joseph and William. I am descended from William.

My husband descends from Corbin Coulter, grandson of Joseph Coulter who was the son of Eleanor Coulter of Sussex Co., DE. I have been involved with a group of Coulter researchers who have worked on this family for a number of years. We feel that Eleanor Torbett was the husband of James Coulter of Dumfries, Scotland based on the results of a researcher in Scotland. James apparently died in Scotland and Eleanor moved to America with her six sons.

Yeah. I'd be interested in information on Joseph's line as well. That is a complete missing link for me.

Sandy - I believe we have spoken in the past and I think I've even acquired info from you. Good to see you are still about.

Bob - What is your source/speculation for James' death at sea. It would make sense that the Eleanor in Scotland is the same Eleanor in Delaware. In fact, highly probable. However, I do not have any ship info for their journey. I have read speculation that the Coulter's owned ships due to the fact that James and others were merchants in Scotland. It is possible then that Eleanor used one of the family ships to make that journey with her children.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the English/Scots/Irish were pretty good about ships logs. However, I have heard that if you were traveling on your own vessel that you did not have to record yourself or your family members. Take that with a grain of salt because I am not certain.

Hi Richard, The info on James's death is just a statement. I have the printout sheet on him. I found it on Ancestry.com. Submitted by Janet Ariciu. It says he died in 1708 at sea or Ire. I think it might be at sea, or seems some mention of a burial would have been made.
