I have researched to find a William Colter married to Temperance Kelly listed in the 1860 Census. On the 1870 Cenus it has Temperance listed as HOH with several children to include: Margaret H. age 22, Rachel age 18, Laura age 16, James age 13, William age 11, Samuel M. age 10, Asbery B. age 8, and Joseph S. age 21. My great grandfather was Samuel Coulter married to Annie Dority. Annie was also married to Samuel's brother "Jim" or "James" and upon his death, she took up with his brother. On the cenus records of 1900 and 1910, both brothers list their father as being from Ireland and mother as being from Georgia. Any information to help get me past this brick wall would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Leigh
Regarding your Coulter research, do you know the name of your Samuel's father in Ireland? Two brothers James b.1838 & Archibald b. 1841 came to NZ from County Fermanagh & Tyrone Ireland their parents Joseph & Mary nee Weir. My cousin and I who have done the NZ family tree have always considered that other siblings could have gone to USA during the same period. Is there any connection that you know of?
Regards Jill

From the records I have, there was a William Colter listed on the 1860 US Cenus with children by the name of Samuel, James, and Miller (all 3 names appear in my lineage as brothers). That would mean that William came from Ireland. There is an Archibald Coulter listed in the "Griffith's Valuation of Ireland 1848-1864". I have not checked further into it, but this may be the Archibald you are looking for. William has children with dates of birth prior to 1829, so I don't think they are related. I will keep checking and keep you posted on what I find.

Thanks,
Leigh
