My great grandmother was Mary Clotilda Cauchois. She was born in Sandwich East, Ontario (Windsor)in 1863. This Cauchois family arrived in Montreal in 1683 from Rouen, France. John Baptist Cauchois was married at Mackinac in 1764. John Baptist died in Detroit. I have a great deal more information. The Burton Historical Collection has a book 'French Families of the Detroit River Region 1701-1911' by Father Denissen that provides supporting detail for this family line. Let me know if you are interested in additional details.
Thanks!

I am searching for the lineage of my grandmother, Mary Jane Cushway, b. 11 Jul 1871 in Detroit. She was the daughter of Marie Eugenia (Jane) PILON and Joseph CUSHWAY. On my grandmother’s First Communion certificate at Ste-Anne’s Church of Detroit her name is Marie Eugenia CUSHOIS.

Her parent’s marriage record (1861) is badly damaged in the Ste-Anne’s register , but the surname appears to be “COURTOIS.” I found this puzzling since the name Courtois is generally Anglicized as CURTIS and is not phonetically close to CUSHWAY.

It was not until I came across the name COUCHOIS in the book Histoire des canadiens du Michigan et du comté d’Essex, Ontario, by T. Saint-Pierre, 1895, that it occurred how close the spelling could be. A Joseph COUCHOIS is listed as a 1869 member of Section du comté Wayne de l’Association St-St-Jean-Baptiste de l’Etate du Michigan. It later sketchs the Couchois famille, stating that the family was “established in Detroit around 1776, descending from Jean-Baptiste Couchois, voyageur, established at Mackinac since 1725. Alexis and Louis Couchois have continued the lineage. Jean-Baptiste Couchois, their grandfather, arrived from Quebec.” This, of course, is well known from Fr. Dennison’s work on Detroit area families, under the more common and perhaps the original surname CAUCHOIS.

My Joseph Cushway’s spouse, Eugenia Pilon, once lived in Mt. Clemens-New Baltimore area. I know that “Baptiste COSHWAY” also lived in Mt. Clemens in 1820, and was reported to be “Cochois” the Indian trader at Flint and Saginaw in 1819. Is there a connection here? Possibly.

My Joseph was born between 1824 and 1834. The marriage record is clear about one thing: his father’s name was also Joseph. The Joseph Cushway family eventually settled in Bay City, where the Benjamin Cushway/Cauchois family also once lived. Lots of possiblities but I am having difficulty making any connections. Do you have any information that would help?

Hi! I am hoping to find a CAUCHOIS connection. I am looking for any info about the CAUCHOIS family in the Monroe, MI area, comming from Quebec, most likely. I am trying to trace a Cecilia CUSHWAY, who married Joseph LESPERANCE (b.1800) - both born in Canada. They moved to Monroe, MI, where their name was changed to HOPE. I believe Cecilia to be originally Cecilia CAUCHOIS, probably born 26 MAY 1809 Sandwich, Essex, Ontario to IGNATIUS CAUCHOIS and TERESA LAPERLE. If you have any further info on possible connections, I would love to hear it.
Thank you so much!
Robin

Hi there.... My family COUCHOIS.....also used CUSHWAY on Mackinac Island for the boat business Name.....My family was from the Island, Cheyboygan, Grand Rapids and Lansing areas...That I know of....I believe the Couchois and Cauchois are related as I think that when they signed coming over on the boats early on from France, then moving to the Canada area before heading to the island...that the O's and A's were often confused because of the penmanship....However I don't recognize the names you posted.....I am sorry that I can't help anymore....I wished I knew how to connect the dots...because I am certain there is a connection...
If I can help in any way please let me know.....
I will be glad to answer any questions you may have..
Thanks
