I have hit a brick wall with Nathan Couch, b. 1804 in SC, appears to have lived in Georgia while, and by 1850 is in Alabama. Often listed as Nathan B Couch, but census record shows him as Nathan C Couch, and he has a son named Calvin. I cannot find anything on his siblings or parents in South Carolina.

Several Couch men are listed in the 1830 census for Franklin County, Georgia and appear to be brothers of Joseph Couch of Spartanburg, but no record he had a son named Nathan. Perhaps he is a cousin? There is a Nathan Couch in the 1830 Franklin county census, but the number of children don't exactly line up with what I have on his issue.

Have you considered using DNA to help you find out more about Nathan Couch? That is what I had to do with my Couches from New Jersey because so many documents had been destroyed.

Feel free to email me at beckygrizz@yahoo.com if you would like to learn more about the DNA process.

Becky Griswold

Thanks. I've done the mtDNA and am now waiting on results. It's good to know I'm not the only Couch descendant using this approach!

Have you joined the Couch DNA project?

mtDNA is great, but it unfortunately won't help you with your Nathan Couch line. You would have to take the atDNA test for a DNA connection to Nathan. Also, if you know a living male who descends from Nathan's line, then he could take the Y-DNA test and that would tell definitively which Couch line Nathan is from.

Sorry, I should have said I've taken the mtDNA and am now waiting results on the family finder DNA. But I am going to look for male relatives who have or might take the Y-DNA. Thanks for the suggestion!

Have you contacted Bill Couch? He has a web site. Nathan Couch is part of our group 5 DNA. It is not known who his parents are.
