Rachel Corgill Wife of Elisha/Eleazer Hornbeck Ulster and Sullivan Co., NY 1795 - 18??

Story last updated December 2014

There is much misinformation, and some confusion on the genealogy of Eleazer Hornbeck from Ulster and Sullivan Counties of New York, late 1700's to mid 1800's. To (a) summarize the known facts, (b) correct some falsehoods and (c) list what is concluded about his life story, the following is provided:

First the knowns based on records:

1. A different Elisha Hornbeck is listed in the Wawarsing RDC records born 06 Mar 1791 son of Abraham Hornbeck and Rachel Decker; grandson of Elisha Hornbeck (b. 1735). He married Sarah Louw and they had the following children: Catherine Addis, John Addis, Peter H., Cornelius Hardenburgh, Waarner, and possibly one other. This Elisha died 1868 in Neversink. (Now forget about him for this summary, he is simply listed so no one confuses him with the one born in 1792 that is the focus of this story.)

2. An Elliza Hornbeck is listed in the re-translated Wawarsing RDC records born 02 Dec 1792. His parents were Petrus Hornbeck and Sarah Maria Louw. (The spelling of this name - being neither Elisha nor Eleazer is probably at the source of some of the confusion.) This Elliza would also be the grandson of Elisha Hornbeck (b. 1735).

3. An Eleazer Hornbeck is consistently floating around in the records first in Wawarsing and then in Neversink and is pretty well documented after he shows up serving very briefly in the War of 1812 (from Aug - Nov 1814). He is listed in Wawarsing, Ulster County in the 1820 and 1830 census and in 1840 census in Neversink, Sullivan County with a growing family. (I don't think he moved between 1830 and 1840, it is just that Neversink got created.)

4 . In 1845 and 1846 Eleazer Hornbeck is mentioned in the early Grahamsville Church Records by reference as follows: Oct 4, 1845 -"Received Confession of faith" ... (among others) "Jacob Hornbeck, son of Eleazer, Sophia Tompkins, wife of Jacob" … April 4, 1846 Received as Member "Hannah (Rosekrans) wife of Eleazer".

5 . In early 1849, Eleazer dies intestate, but a claim is placed against his estate by Nathan S. Perkins and Eleazer's family and their locations in 1849 are listed in the claim as well as in the quit claim they sign to resolve the claim. Those listed are wife Hannah and son Jacob of Neversink, and children James, John, Joseph (a minor), John Hinckly and his wife Nelly Hornbeck Hinckly of Wawarsing.

6. Eleazer Hornbeck is mentioned in two documents (a) Historical sketch of the Reformed Church of Grahamsville; and (b) The papers of Reverend J. Milton Harris. In each case only a discussion of where he lived in the Grahamsville area is provided, rather than links to family.

7. Hannah's tombstone in a woods in Sundown begins, "Hannah, wife of Eleazer Hornbeck".

Thus the picture that emerges of Eleazer and family, and further census and misc research reveals approximate or actual birth dates of family members as follows:

Jacob - about 1817 - married Sophia Tompkins, she the victim of the 1868 Accord, NY roadside murder
Nelly - about 1820 - married John Hinckley
James Samuel - July 1823 - married (1) Lucy Edwards; (2) Sylvia
John S. - Jan 1826 - married Mary Jane Ackerly
Joseph - about 1829 - married Catherine Von Wagner
Hannah Rosekrans was born 09 May 1798 in Shawungunk

Based on the known facts above, it was assumed that Eleazer and Hannah married about 1816 since son Jacob was born about 1817.

The important new information that has come to light about the Eleazer Hornbeck family comes via the following source: New York Town Clerks Register of Men who served in the Civil War 1861-1865. The Register separately lists Jacob, James and John and includes their parents. For each of the three men listed in the Register, known to be the sons of Eleazer per his will, the parents are as follows: Elezer Hornbeck and Rachel Corgill (spelled in a few ways). Importantly, it does not list Hannah as the mother and notice also that actually from the known records, we don't come across Hannah as a spouse of Eleazer until Hannah she joins the Grahamsville Church in 1846.

Although youngest son Joseph served in the Civil War, I have not come across a listing of him in the same Register thus cannot attest to his mother's name.

As an aside - James and John both named a daughter Rachel (presumably after their mother, who is not Hannah); younger son Joseph named a daughter Hannah.

Rachel Corgill was born 19 Oct 1795 in Wawarsing, the daughter of Abram Corgill (1758-1838) and Tryntie Hornbeck (1762-1838); Tryntie is also the daughter of Elisha Hornbeck (b. 1735).

That ends the summary of the knowns. But one last item that I am trying to track down so it can be called a known: I am told that in a book Time and the Valley written about the Neversink area, Eleazer and Rachel are noted together.

Tieing the story together:

Some on-line information was also consulted and there are a lot of family trees on line that copy from other trees, some of the family info is good, some not. In particular there are three main categories of family tree files that name Elisha, Eleazer, Elliza Hornbeck.

1 . Some list Eleazer Hornbeck b. 1796 in Shawaungunk to the same Petrus and Sarah Louw Hornbeck (but there is no such person in the Shawungunk record and no records there for the family of Petrus and Maria (all their children are listed in Wawarsing)). So that set of trees has a wrong birth year and location for a start, but they do generally list him married to Hannah and they usually list the 5 children, or some part of them.

2. Some trees, often the same as those in 1 above and 3 below also list both an Elisha and an Elliza born Wawarsing in Dec 1792 (when combined with Elisha b. 1791 discussed very early in this story and their listing of Eleazer in 1796, these trees have 4 men with very similar names, three of whom born to the same parents).

3 . Some trees have have Elisha (b. 1792) married to Rachel Corgill, and some of these list a single one son James (or Sands James)*, a few 2 sons, James and Jacob. Those listing him married to Rachel are correct, even if they lack all the children.

* I cannot account for the name Sand James being used for James Samuel.

So what we have is this -

1. Although the Wawarsing record lists an Elliza b. Dec 1792, the name Elliza never again shows in the records. The person becomes Eleazer in all the records thereafter, although it was likely his name was meant to honor his grandfather Elisha Hornbeck, just as was his cousin Elisha born in 1791. (The name Eleazer is fairly common in Neversink back in this time.)

2. This Eleazer, sometimes called Elisha in some family trees was the son of Petrus and Sarah (Maria) Louw Hornbeck.

3 . There was no Eleazer born in Shawungunk in 1796.

4. Eleazer marries his first cousin Rachel Corgill presumably in about 1815 or 1816 (given that 1st child Jacob was born about 1817), and together they have at least the following children: Jacob, Nelly, James and John (with the clearest proof being the New York Town Clerk Register of Civil War men).

5. At some point Rachel dies and Eleazer marries Hannah Rosekrans. When the death and remarriage occurs is not yet known, and whether Hannah was previously married I do not know. But for timing, best fit is either Rachel dies about the time son John is born (Jan 1826) or within a year of that, and Hannah becomes Mrs. Eleazer in about 1828 in time to produce Joseph recalling he named a daughter Hannah. But the marriage to Hannah could be as late as 1846 when she appears in the Grahamsville church record.

Thus for descendants of Jacob (including this writer), Nelly, James and John, (and uncertain on Joseph) we are not descended from the Rosekrans and their long and interesting history; instead we are doubly related to Elisha Hornbeck (b. 1735) and at least as far as I can tell, the Corgill genealogy for Abrahms background is not at all well established (though a few on-line sources list his origin as Scotland).

To further elucidate the story, I would love to find:

a. Records of Eleazer's marriages to Rachel and Hannah (but the marriages in Wawarsing apparently don't exist from 1795 - about 1830)

b. Death record of Rachel

c. The NY Town Clerks Register for Joseph Hornbeck listing his parentage, particularly his mother.

d. The Time and the Valley Book that references Eleazer and Rachel.

e. Corgill geneaalogy.

Other miscellaneous records of Eleazer

A. War of 1812 Records

Available from national archives - Nothing relating to pension records Muster record: 1. Eleazer Hornbeck, private, company muster role Aug 18-Nov 18, 1814 Capt Gale's Co. Detached Militia, Reg't of Infantry commanded by Lieut. Col. John T. van Dalfsen. 2. Eleazer Hornbeck, Pvt. Co. muster role dated Brooklyn, Nov 22, 1814 for Aug 18 to Nov 22, 1814, Capt. J.P.C. Sampson's Company of Detached Militia in the Reg't commanded by Lieut. Col. John T. Van Dalfsen. Date of enlistment 18 Aug 1814. Discharged Sullivan Co 160 M from Enct. 3. Eleazer Hornbeck, Pvt. Company Pay Roll for Sept 18 to Nov 26, 1814 Capt J.P.C…. Commencement of service Sept 18, 1814; expiration of service Nov 9, 1814; Term of service 1 month 22 days; Amount of pay 13 dollars 86 cents; Remarks: Discharged resides 160 miles from Encampment.

B. A mention in Historical Sketch of Reformed Church of Grahamsville, New York

Page 26: "On the remote eastern boundary, where now resides Cornelius Vandemark, lived Cornelius H. Sheeley, one of the first Elders of the Church, the head of one of the two branches of the Sheeley family. Next this way was a house at Conrad Vandemark's; one at Charles H. Smith's and one on the Luff Smith Road; a house at Harirson Smith's on the opposite side of the road; a house at Sanford Vandemark's and a log house at the Eleazer Hornbeck place, near old well, on creek side of road; a house at Gregory Hornbeck's and a school house at east end of covered bridge. The red mill and house were built in 1842. On the knoll in the rear of Mrs. Horace Hornbeck's was a log house, the home of the Hornbeck family…" Further note: Later on page 27 is a statement: On the Denam Mountain Road was a house built by Mr. Tompkins. (Researcher note: Could this Tompkins be related to Sophia Tompkins who married Jacob Hornbeck, eldest son of Eleazer in 1844?)

C. A mention in booklet entitled: "The Papers of Reverend J. Milton Harris"

Page 9: "On the hill back of the Dr. Kimble's home and houses, the notable Gregory Hornbeck lived on the place Grover Hornbeck had bought for his new residence. There was an old chimney that he'd taken down; that was the chimney to Gregory Hornbeck's house. Gregory's father was known as Eleazer [sic] Hornbeck; he lived in a log house in this vicinity. The house burned up. (Some say Abram was the father of Gregory. Gregory's name was Abram.)" Researchers note 1: Eleazer was not the father of Gregory. Researchers note 2: Other Hornbeck's mentioned in the Papers of Rev. Harris: Susan, Chester, Grover, Mrs. Ethel, Peter, Joseph, Sanford, Otis, Horace, Wessel, Addie, Jacob, Ralph, Sam, Lyman.

D. Claim against his estate and Quit Claim by family

Eleazer died intestate, in Kingston, Ulster County records are a petitioner claim and quit claim deed as follows:

1. A petitioner, Nathan S. Perkins asked the court, as a creditor of Eleazer to have his estate given to him. He valued the estate at less than $1000. (The letter names all Eleazer's and Hannah's children and lists where the lived in 1849. Also mentions Joseph a minor (about 20). Petition filed April 16, 1849.

2. Quit claim deed filed in Kingston that begins as follows: This indenture made this 23rd day of May 1849, between widow Hannah Hornbeck and Jacob Hornbeck of Neversink, Sullivan County, and James Hornbeck, John Hornbeck, Joseph Hornbeck, John Hinckly, and Nelly his wife, of the Town of Wawarsing, Ulster County, being the widow and heirs of Eleaser Hornbeck deceased of the first part and Nathan S. Perkins of the Town of Wawarsing, Ulster County, of the second part. The land referenced was at the time in the Town of Shandaken, Ulster County, in the Denning _____, in Great Lot in the Hardenburgh Patent.

E. A mention in the Book Time and the Valley

Information pending

Comments and thoughts please. Anyone know the lineage of Rachel and her father Abrahm?

Gary Dufel

gdufsr@gmail.com

I have an ancestor Rachel Corgill, born 1795 in Wawarsing, Ulster and the area became part of Neversink, Sullivan County. She was daughter of Abrahm Corgill and Tryntie Hornbeck and she married Eleazer/Elisha Hornbeck about 1816 or so. I am looking to trace Abrahm back in time. Some on-line trees list him being from Scotland

Would like to hear from anyone related to the Corgills. My children are descended from the Corgills in Texas. Their gggrandfather was Wm. Able Corgill, ggrandfather was Wilbert Madison Corgill, and their grandmother was Lois Marzelle Corgill Smiddy. Lois' brother, Leonard Corgill, passed away recently in Wichita Falls, Texas. To my knowledge there are no males to carry on the Corgill name in this line.

Sue,

I have just read your message regarding Samuel Corgill. I was always told, the name was Cargill. Our 'cousin' Marsha Hays Frederick mentioned your message last week.

I have very little info on Sam Corgill other than this:

(1) I have a copy of a death certificate for Letha Sims Corgill Latham, Mary Ada Corgill's mother.
(2) A copy of a page showing where Sam Corgill(e) was a Private in Co. B 28th Regiment of the Louisiana Infantry during the Civil War. He died on June 16, 1862 in camp near Vicksburg, MS of measles.

This information was furnished to me by one of my aunt's. I have not researched this side of the family yet, so have found nothing else.

If you would like copies of these, I would be happy to mail them to you. Just send your address to me.

Gail

CORGILL FAMILY

Richard,

Thanks, so much, for responding to my message. I had given up hope that anyone other than Sue was researching this family.

However, our info differs somewhat. My research, and verification by family members, shows that Letha Sims Corgill (dtr. of Artemus Sims) was married to Samuel Elcainian Corgill. Their children were Mary Ada Corgill who married William Allen Purdy (these two were my great grandparents on my dad's side), William Able, Leathy Anna, Samuel Madison (whom I show was born in 1863), and F. Corgill. Samuel Elcainian is said to have died during the civil war (1862) of measles. He married Letha in 1852 in Bossier Parrish, Louisiana (found on Ancestry.com database). After Samuel died, Letha married John Latham in Hempstead, Arkansas on October 9, 1867.

Do you have any documentation on Lorenzo? Would love to compare notes.

You can e-mail me direct at buffalospirit@door.net.
Hi, I am looking for a Dallas Co. connection also. I have Samuel Corgill, I am sure he had a sister named Ann Eliza. She married George Lenoir in Dallas Co. in 1846 and later moved to LA. My Samuel was then in AR with his wife Letha Latham. Lethas siblings were living with them and later one of them married Martha lenoir, daughter of George lenoir and Ann Eliza Corgill. I also wonder if there is a possible connection to James Corgill and Margeret Corgill.

Are Samuel, Ann Eliza, James and Margaret siblings?

Sure would like to find out. Do you have any parents or siblings for james?

Jo Cox
I believe these last 3 to be Lethas siblings. Does anyone know the brothers and sister of Samuel Corgill? The W. F. Sims listed with them on this census married Martha lenoir 5 years later and her mother was Ann Elizabeth Corgill. I am trying to establish a connection here.
Thanks for any help.

Jo

Does anyone have any documentation on Lorenzo? I have heard this name before connected with Samuel E. Corgill, But all the documents I find his name is Samuel E. I am beginning to think Lorenzo may have been his father. My G.G.Grandfather was William Able. Would love to hear from any one on this

I have been unable to trace the Corgills or the Leachs. A large group of them all moved to Texas.
