On Monday morning, August 8, at her home in Cedar Mills, God took into His care the life of Alta Staggs, who spent her life here on earth in the service of her family and friends. She was among mothers the greatest.
Alta was born in Monroe Township, Adams County, Ohio on January 11, 1909 to Wylie and Mary McCarty Copas.
Preceding her in death were her father, Wylie Copas, and grandson, Daryl Johnson.
Alta was a member of the Beasley Fork Christian Union Church and the Cedar Mills Methodist Church.
Alta was united in marriage to Oscar E. Staggs, Sr. June 12, 1926 by Rev. Eugene Mills. To this union six children were born, Mary Johnson of Cincinnati, Oscar, Jr., and Geraldine Lacy of West Union, Harold of Carlisle, Karen Grooms of West Union, Route 1 and Linda Calvert of West Union, Route 2.
Alta is survived by her husband, Oscar, Sr. and her six children; her mother, Mary Copas Hull; two brothers, Albert Copas of Salanis, Calif. And Elmer Copas of West Union, Route 2, and two sisters, Bethany Copas and Nealie Grooms of West Union, Route 2. She also leaves her sons-in-law, Lomar Johnson, Charles Lacy, Robert K. Grooms and Billy Calvert. Her daughters-in-law are Rose Mary Staggs and Ruth Staggs. There are 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren who will miss her love and kindness. She leaves her brother-in-law, Chilton Grooms and sister-in-law Elizabeth Copas; also, a niece, Grace Sininger of Amelia, Ohio.

Funeral Services for Elmer Copas
Elmer Copas, 71, of 1070 Copas Road, West Union, died last Wednesday at a Cincinnati Hospital.
Surviving are two sisters, Bethany Copas and Nealie Grooms, both of West Union, and a brother, Albert, of California.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Beasley Fork Church, with Rev. Clifford Stevens officiating. Burial was in the West Union Cemetery.

Elmer Noble Copas, son of Wylie and Mary McCarty Copas Hull was born November 3, 1910 and passed away January 27, 1982 at Veterans Medical Center, Ft. Thomas, Ky. at age 71 years, two months and 24 days.
He was preceded in death by Father, Mother, one sister, Alta Staggs, and step-father George Hull.
He is survived by one brother, Albert Copas, Salinas, Calif.; two sisters, Bethany Copas and Nealie Grooms, West Union, Ohio; also seven nieces and nephews, Mary Johnson, Cincinnati, Harold Staggs, Carlisle, Oscar Staggs Jr., Geraldine Lacy, Karen Grooms and Linda Calvert, of West Union, and Evelyn Grace Sininger, Amelia, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Copas, Salinas, Calif.; two brothers-in-law, Oscar Staggs and Chilton Grooms, West Union; one uncle, Johnie McCarty, West Union, and several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews he dearly loved.
He was inducted into service for his country September, 1942 and served faithfully for more than three years. Serving in the European Theater of War, he was discharged October 19, 1945.
He was a member of V. F. W., American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
In November, 1980, he accepted Christ as his Savior. His last testimony was there was nothing between him and the Lord.
He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors. He was honest in all things and helped anyone in need.

Hi, I just wanted to know if she was related to Greenberry and Susan(nah)(Staggs) Copas? I do remember my grandparents talking of Oscar and James Staggs, but don't know if Oscar is the same as yours. Ann

Geraldine “Gerry” Lacy, 83, of West Union, died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at the Adams County Manor. Mrs. Lacy was born
March 31, 1930, the daughter of the late Oscar and Alta
(Copas) Staggs in Adams County.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lacy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Lacy, and a greatgranddaughter,
Paislee Dickens. She is survived by two daughters, Julie Beasley and Debbie Eldridge, both of West Union; a son, Michael Lacy of West Union; two sisters, Karen Grooms and
Linda Calvert, both of West Union; a brother, Harold
Staggs of New Carlisle; four grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 27, at 1 p.m. at the Thompson-Meeker Funeral Home, West Union, with Cliff
Stevens officiating. Burial followed in the West Union
Cemetery. Visitation was held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
July 27. A gathering with friends and family was held
at the West Union Christian Union Fellowship Hall following
the services.
