My great grandfather, John Marshall Cookson, is listed in the 1850 Census in the household of Gardner Cookson with his brother Calvin and his mother Mary. My family records say that John was born Feb. 2, 1848 in Linneus, Aroostock, Me. His father was Calvin Gray Cookson born ca 1821-1824 and married to Mary Curran ca 1844. I found him later in Elgin, Canada and he died in Augres, Mi. (I have a copy of his death certificate but it gives no earlier data). I have not been able to trace him any earlier or find his parentage. I assume that he and Gardner were brothers. I have noted a number of Cooksons around the area at the time. If any of my data would be of helo to you let me know and I would very much appreciate any data you find on Gardner or Calvin Gray. The 1850 Census for Brewer, Penobscott, Me shows him with three sons, Edward A., John C. and Wiliam.

My name is Scarlett Cookson, I am a great-granddaughter of George Cookson. George's descendants all live in London.

We know that George was born on 9/01/1912 in Winnipeg, Canada, and that he was orphaned. We do not know when he arrived in England. He died aged 46 of blood poisoning following a failed operation. My Father and Grandfather have both told me that George was a lovely man.

George joined the British Army in 1940. He was married to Florence Orr, they had two children Joan and Allan. Allan, my Grandfather was born in 1943. Unforunatly Joan died aged 17. Allan married Valerie in 1960, they had two children, Jeremy and Alan. Jeremy is my father.

We do not know much about George's family history, but would love to learn more.

I am looking for info on parents of Ernest Cookson b. 1883 Arlecdon, Cumberland. His parents were John Cookson b. abt 1858 Westmoreland and Elizabeth Edwards. John Cookson was the son of John Cookson b. abt 1823 and Jane Watson. In 1891 Ernest is living with his grandparents, John Cookson & Jane Watson. I am presently researching the Cookson family who originate from the Pilling area of Lancashire. and have been to the parish church and have pgotographs of the gravestones that contain the name 'Cookson' I have an interest in Samson Cookson b 1878 who shows on the 1881 and 1891 census forms but then cannot any trace of him fron there on. Do you have him included in your tree? Would appreciate any available information and I am willing to exchange information and/or photographs. Regards Steve

First I am not the one you replyed to but do have The Rebecca she was refering to in my database. Some of what the other person has is different from what I have.Rebecca Cookson was born to Oral Cookson and Evelyn Gordon as was stated she was born 14 Jan 1920 in Etna,Penobscot,Maine and died 28 Sep 1979 in San Diego,Ca. I have more and some other folks that I have been in contact with over the years/ My Mom was a Cookson.

I'm trying to incorporate all the marriages and the tree is rather busy, I want to make sure it's as accurate as possible. When I'm back this summer my mother and I are going to visit Pilling church to see if there are any more clues.

I have the basic census information for my great grandmother, Agnes Cookson b 1873, parents Thomas b 1838 and Ann b 1840 and extended family all in the Pilling/Preesall/Garstang area of Lancashire. Thomas was the village miller and most of the family were in farming.

If anyone has any familiarity with them I would love to hear. Especially anything to do with the two Gladys Rosamond Cooksons I discovered. Thanks!

I am the Gloria Cookson, or rather Gloria Cookson, mentioned in the original post. My father was Raymond, my brother is Albert Cookson (living in Etna). My mother was Gloria Vanderhoof Cookson. My father is bured in the cemetary in Etna. I know that Evelyn was married to Oral Cookson, but that is about all. Yes some of the children, I ws told, died, two others - George and Gloria - was put up for adoption. George became - I have it written somewhere. Gloria became Nancy and lives/lived in Canada. I would appreciate any family history that any of you have.

Hi I am trying to find info on my grandfather John Alexander Cookson b.1908- he had two brothers Ben and George. His mothers birth name was Harriet Elizabeth Vince (sylvia).1st marriage to Tidy and had a son David William Tidy, she later married Thomas Bedson Cookson. Harriet died in Canada 1913 -Iknow that John,Ben and George ended up in Barnado's once back in the UK. Ben later returned to Canada and married Hattie? George lived in London. John also lived in the UK. Has anybody got any info on the brothers, dob,dod etc. regards Sarah Collins.

carolann greiner turner, hello, i have been trying to reach you. i went to the david library last spring to see if they had information on thomas cookson, war of 1812 and war of independence. since thomas died in quebec 1830's, i assumed he was of age to be a veteran of both wars. no records of thomas could be found. afterwards i saw your posting that said thomas was about 18 or 19 years when he was in the war of 1812. thomas is tough to track. maybe military records over in england might help. i bet he was born in england, came over for the war and never went back. you said something in the past about hiring a pro to track thomas down, whats the cost? let me know , maybe i can help out. i would also like to find out more about joseph cookson's 1st wife merance callie, from sherebrook, canada, and her family, so maybe the genealogist idea is sounding better all the time. i hope all is well with you and vern, and the family. keith

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help with this one.

A marriage took place at Whitegate, Cheshire, England on 21st April 1813 between Joseph Cookson and Mary Davies.

As the marriage certificate makes no mention of who the parents are and I have two Joseph Cooksons, either of which could possibly fit the bill, I am stuck.

Possibility No 1. Joseph Cookson born in Over Cheshire c.1793. He was a saltboiler by trade. Wife Mary.

Possibility No 2. Joseph Cookson ch. January 1792 in Tarvin Cheshire, died 11th, February 1822 Tarvin. He was a farmer. Wife Mary.

Any feedback at all would be more than welcome.

Hi!

We are not certain as to exactly WHEN our COOKSONS came to North America. However, we find our Thomas COOKSON in the War of 1812 in Quebec City--he is 19 at the time of his enlistment. Unfortunately, no other information is gained from his military records. From 1812 on I have his complete descendancy on down to the present day. There was another COOKSON in Quebec City at this same time, and his name was William. I believe there HAS to be a connection. Am intrigued by the names you list as there was a Thomas AND a William, although the dates are a bit off.

carolann, how are you doing? i have been looking for you on the internet, but did not know your email address, or your land address. i see you are still looking for info. on thomas cookson. i wrote aletter to canada some years back, the reply was in french, and i do not know what it says. but i guess it says they want $$$$$$, for any info.. you have my land address, give me yours and i will send you copies of my letters from canada, who knows maybe there will be a lead. its really difficult to find records on the soldiers of england during the war of 1812. i thought you said there was a chance that thomas or even his father was in the american revolutionary war. if thomas was 19yrs at enlistment war of 1812, his father(who ever he was) would be old enough for american rev. war. early census records list a cookson in new york but no info. on him.

Another apparently given to Mr. and Mrs. Elmore Cookson from sister Della, age 17 years, 5 mo, taken Oct 29 1909

I'd be very interested in sharing information re my COOKSON family who originated in Quebec ca. War of 1812.

This line of COOKSONS then came into the US approx. 1875 or so. Some went to Maine and other to Mass.

I have lots of info to share.

I am looking for info on a Alice Cookson she Married a Thomas Billington. I would love any info on the children and the dates I did find them in the 1841 lancashire Census a friend has they say Thomas is 45 and alice is 35 but she said in those days they rounded there age off to the nearest five. So the birth year would be wrong to figure it out. I hope there is some that is connected some how.

I don't know if this helps. The only info I have on Lewis Cass is that he married Eva A. Hutchins on March 7, 1872. My ggggrandfather was his older brother Milo A. Do you know where in Pa Samuel Pierce Sr was born in 1743?

There waa the Rev James COOKSON (1751-1835), who was born at Barton and christened at Martindale on 4 Apr 1751. He was the son of John Cookson, gent of Barton Westmoreland, who married Elizabeth MOUNSEY on 7 Jun 1750 in Barton.

Rev James was Vicar of Colmer, Hants for 59 years. He married sarah ROBINSON on 28 Jul 1783 at East Tisted, Hants.

They had at least 5 children:

Capt John COOKSON, Royal Bengal Artillery (1787-1819). Buried at Colmer.
Lt George Bryon COOKSON. 8 Native Infantry (1789-1813), buried at Dinapore, India
Ann Constantia COOKSON (1800-1821), buried at Colmer.
Thomas COOKSON (1803-1834), buried at Colmer.
James COOKSON, about who I know nothing.

Most of this data comes from the gravestones in the churchyard, which I found somewhere on the internet.

Looking for documentation of names of Ann Greenlaw's parents. I have been told that they were Alexander Greenlaw and Jane Allan, but I lack any proof. Ann Greenlaw (1813-1896) married Ralph Cookson in 1828, and this couple had many children. Is there a descendant out there who has a family bible or other written documentation? Ann had two brothers--Alexander (1818-1876, my ancestor) and Harris (1812-1881,never married).

He was the son of Thomas Cookson c.1863 and Martha Ankers and was married to Martha Lightfoot.

Does anyone know whether or not this farm still exists?

Hi,

I am looking for where a public house (beerhouse) was situated in Hartford Cheshire England in the 1800's called "The Royal Oak".

Evidence for it's existance is on various censuses at the time and particularly relating to the family of Joseph and Ellen Cookson, where Joseph was described as both publican and grocer.

On a recent visit to Hartford, people I spoke to were unable to recall an establishment by this name.

Can anyone help?

I believe this Rossetta is a relative of mine I have a Rolla that is from the same areaExcelsior Springs Mo. Rolla born around 1857 and Rolla Born in the 1880 his father was William Cookston the 1857 Rolla was John who had a sister Rosetta.
