My mother was a Cookson, actually there is a town by the name of Cookson in NE OK. My grandfather was Levi "Blackie" Cookson, he was born in 1885 and died in 1969. He was married to Mary Josephine Keyes. Nine children were born of this marriage.

If this some of the information you need let me know. I would be interested in the file that Harriet is sending you, too.

Thanks and good luck.

Rose,

Yes, I am very familiar with the Levi Cookson Cemetery in Park Hill, Oklahoma. That cemetery is named after my grandfather, Levi Cookson. All of my mother's family (she was Carmelita Cookson) is buried there. Have you been there? Decoration Day is the first Sunday in May each year. We used to have church services there and sing and then have a picnic lunch. That ceased to happen many years ago.

Yes, I have heard many stories about Jack Cookson. Did you know that there is a Cookson, Oklahoma named after my great grandfather, John Cookson?

Where do you live and how exactly are you related to the Cooksons from Cherokee County?

I look forward to hearing from you. This is exciting to find someone on the internet that is relation or know my relation.

Looking forward to hearing more.

Marilyn I have been to the grave yard or at least to a Levi Cookson but it wasn't at Park Hill it was nearer to Pettit or Qualls. I was there when my grandmother Susan Jane Lawley was buried there in 1947. My grand father John Lawley and his mother Matilda Lawley who was married to Jack Hilderbrand Cookson after Robert Harrison Lawley died in 1888.They were married in 1894 and went to the Chicago World Fair on their honeymoon. He also took four of his sons with them.My grandfathers brother Tom Lawley and his wife are buried there. I was born in the Cookson Hills near cookson. In the late fortys or early fiftys the Illnois River was damned to form Lake Tenkiller to bring electric power to the area. Old Cookson (store and postoffice )were moved to higher ground. My grandfathers farm was only a couple miles from the store and that was where I was born.I now live in Centeral California. However I plan on going home in Sept. You can take the ol girl out of the Cookson Hills, but you can't take the Cookson Hills out of the ol girl.
My E-Mail is ROSENEL1@webtv.net

Marilyn have you tried Genforum.com there is a lot a lot of intrys there. Did you know that Edley Levi Cookson was a judge in the Cherokee government and served more than one term as a senator in the Cherokee government? That was in "THE HISTORY OF THE CHEROKEE INDIANS" by Emmett Star.
