Cude and Coode

Thankyou Vernon. We all appreciate your unflagging research into the descendants of John Coode, which has uncovered a great deal.

Yes the English invented bad spelling (they subsequently invented good spelling too) and in some old families you can often hardly find two children who were christened with the same surname. People just couldnt have cared less how their name was spelt; it was all "spoken word".

However the fact is the Cornish only used a few certain forms of alternatives for COODE, and CUDE was never ever one of them. TIMOTHY is also a very rare name in Cornwall. The immediate assumption must be, therefore, that your Timothy had no Cornish connections.

Also being in the same parish and having a similar sounding name, or even an identical name, is also no guarantee at all that people are related. I can show you many examples of this in Britain and Australia. You will need to find some sort of birth record or other record referring to Timothy as a child in order to provide convincing evidence of a connection.

Some evidence that Timothy had direct dealings with the Coodes would also be helpful.

Good luck
