I've checked with my Commins cousin in Dublin. He's a descendant of Patrick Commins, a brother of Alice Commins. He has done a lot of work on the Commins family history in Ardee from the late 1700's onward. If you're interested, he'd be happy to meet with you to discuss and share family notes. Why don't you respond to my personal email (rice@msu.edu)and I'll send you his contact information.

Hmmmm. . . I know there's an entry in the parish records in Ardee for the birth of a Peter Durnin (7.12.1838) to Edward Durnin and Ally Commins of Hale Street. The sponsors were Pat Martin and Mary Bannon. Would this Peter be one of your great-grandmother's brothers?

The parents of our Alice Commins were Patrick Commins and Judith Fox. Alice is a sister to my great-grandmother Catherine Commins McCartney.

No, Edward stayed, he moved to Meath and raised a family, a couple of whom (two daughters) are said to have emigrated to America in turn. Another daughter Mary Jane Durnin went into service in Dublin and married my great grandfather John Mernagh. And we're still in Dublin.

Do you know what the Commins' father or mothers names were?

Of my Commins ancestors, Catherine, Thomas, and Dennis all immigrated to the U.S. Patrick remained in Ireland on the family land and his descendants still live there today. We have never known what happened to Alice. Perhaps she married your Durnin ancestor. We do know that her sister Catherine and her brother Thomas both named daughters after her.

Did your g-g-grandfather Edward stay in Ireland or is he your ancestor who immigrated?

Hi

just came across this board - I'm tracing Durnin ancestors and I've found a bapismal record for who I think is my great-great-grandfather Edward Durnin. The record is from the parish of Ardee on 17th Sep 1853 and his mother is listed as Alicia Commins. Could this Alicia be the same as your Alice? According to your info, did Patrick, Catherine, Mary and Alice all stay in Louth?

I've discovered some new information since my last posting. Owen Commins and Bridget Coen Cummins had another son, Patrick, who seems to have emigrated to Australia and on to England sometime later. Annie Commins/Cummins came to America in 1912, brother, John, in 1907, Margaret(Sr. Celestine) in about 1908. Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated. Theresa

I saw your 2007 posting on Ancestry.com. I have Commins family members too. When some of them got to America they spelled their name: Cummins.

One son, Patrick Commins, son of Owen Commins and Bridget Coen Commins was from Oranmore, Galway, Ireland. He's the only child who went to Australia from Ireland and then moved on to England. Does this name fit with your research?
Theresa

Their Children are: John, Annie, Mary, and Margaret (who became Sr. Celestine) all emigrated to San Francisco, Ca., USA from 1890 to 1920. Any help with this research is greatly appreciated.
I'm still struggling for information on Phillip Penrose Commins, who married Blanche de Warrenne Waller in Sydney on 21-Feb-1900. Blanche de Warrenne Commins was resident in Gisborne, New Zealand from 1919 and had already been widowed at that time. She remarried a civil engineer, John Alexander McDonald and they continued to live in Gisborne. Her second husband died between 1928 and 1931. Blanche died in Gisborne on 16-Oct-1941 (aged 67).

Did the Commins family come from New Zealand? Or did they originate from co.Upper Tipperary in Ireland, where the Waller's had resided until the 1840s?

The names are Catherine Commins McCartney, Dennis Commins of Cass County, MIchigan, Thomas Commins of Cass County, MI and Elkhart, Indiana, Mary Commins Moran (and her descendants named Salliotte and Cummings), and Alice Commins. A sixth sibling, Patrick, stayed in Ardee when the others immigrated to American around 1850.

Hello,
I have been tracing my Commins relatives of the Dowagiac and Watervliet area in southwest Michigan. Here's a quick summary. Do you see any connection?
Thomas Commins of Ardee, County Louth, Ireland came to the United States in the early 1850's. His sister, Catherine Commins McCartney (my great-grandmother) was already living in Milan, Ohio (near Sandusky, Ohio). Thomas married Mary Mullen of County Tyrone in Sandusky in 1855. They had 4 children in Ohio (Mary Ann or Mary Jane, b. 1857, Julia, b. 1859, Dennis, b. 1860, and Emma, b. 1861). Then they moved to Cass County in southwest Michigan where Thomas's brother Dennis lived. Thomas and Mary had 8 more children: Frank, Lewis, Fred, Will, Charles, Augustus, Edward, and John.
I know the descendants of all these 12 children except for Lewis and Dennis. The last we knew about Lewis and Dennis was in the early 1900's when they lived in Minnesota and then later Nevada (Dennis). There is a family story that Lewis may have moved to the wheat fields of Alberta, Canada.
Thanks for any information you have.
Their married sister, Catherine Commins McCartney, was already living in Milan, Ohio. Both brothers had large families. I have traced most of the descendants of these two families. I have been unable to find a record of his birth in Australia in the period 1855 to 1890, nor have I been able to find a record of his death in Australia between 1900 and 1941. His bride Blanche de Warrenne Waller died in Gisborne, New Zealand in 1941 as Blanche de Warrenne McDonald. That suggests she re-married.
As I uncover more information I'll post it.
Steve

My great, great, great grandfather, John Gough Waller's eldest daughter by his second marriage, Blanche de Warrenne Waller married a Phillip Penrose Commins in Sydney, Australia on 21-Feb-1900. The Waller's emigrated from their estates in Upper Tipperary to Canada, the US, and Australia in the 1840s. Perhaps there is a connection?
I don't suppose that the family tree you mention extends to Manchester or Salford does it? If it did, this would be of considerable interest to me.

John Coumans/Commins-Jane Sargeant of Ireland

I'm looking for more information on the ancestry of John Coumans (also spelled Cummins, Cummings, Cuming, Commans etc.). He was born in 1795 in Couty Cork, Ireland. He married Jane Sargeant, also born in Cork County, but in 1800. Together, or prior to their marriage, they immigrated to Canada, eventually to New Brunswick, and finally settled in Chepstow, Bruce County Ontario. Together the couple had 7 children: Mary, Simon, Jane, John Jr., Elizabeth, Anne and Thomas Coumans. I would love any info anyone has on this family line!

- Carissa Thomas
dancingbanana11@hotmail.com
CThomas@agape.twu.ca

Hi Darrell, I did some checking with OUR cousin tonight and we are of the same family. Mary (COMMINS) Gallimore is the daughter of William (Bill) Jason Commins and Jennie May Loughin. Mary is the youngest of 10 children. Her family was seperated and some went to foster care and some were adopted. Her home is in South Bend, IN. and her number is: (219) 287-3233 and she'd love to hear from you. We believe you are her favorite uncle's son. Was your father's name Ernest and does your brother live in Texas with or near you? She remembers a James Commins living in Texas.

As for me - Mary and I are cousins and I live in Missouri - transplanted from Michigan.

Looking forward to hearing more from you.
Darla LeFEVER Lewis
