That I know no body has made this test.
I am in Panama, but we have few family members that are leaving in EEUU, I will send them your e-mail to see if they are interesting to do it, if not I will investigate if I can do it here. I have our family tree, made by my father, from the first Baker that was in Cuba John William Baker, son of Jacob & Hanna
There are some papers in the Historical Society of Pensilvania Collection Number 1725 that could clarify some matters about our family in Cuba and the relation between John and his father Jacob and sister Catherine but I, until now, could not revised them.
You could contact me by my personbal e-mail: bequerm@bequerengineering.com, if any.
Really it has been a pleasure to receive your information.
waiting that we could keep in contact
Best regards
Manuel

Manuel, I believe that we are 6th cousins, because our common ancestors, Jacob Baker and Hannah Smith, were my 5th great grandparents. A question: have you or any other male Bakers/Bequers in Cuba done a YDNA test? I am a participant in the FamilyTreeDNA.com's group called BakerAncestors. It would be wonderful if we could figure out which Bakers are our family. The name "Baker" is very common in English-speaking countries! I believe the only way we have a chance to learn the name of the father of Jacob Baker is through a YDNA test of a male who is a direct male descendant of Jacob Baker.
I have some interesting new information about our family!
Information on Jacob Baker and his son-in-law Cornelius Comegys (they were business partners and active in the Methodist Church) found by paulabaker69@hotmail.com

Jacob Baker was born 25 Aug. 1731 in Strassburg Germany. [Note: I believe this was Strasbourg, Alsace, France.]

Hannah Schmidt was born 14 July 1750 born in Bucks County , Pennsylvania. She was baptised in the Southampton Baptist Church. The church has a record.

Jacob and Hannah married in Pennsylvania, 8 April 1774.

He died 4 March 1822 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Court record.
http://books.google.com/books?id=zwMcAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA188&a...

Another book http://books.google.com/books?id=RpQOAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA45&am...

Another book.
http://books.google.com/books?id=itw3AQAAIAAJ&pg=PA92&am...

Google book that has Jacob and Cornelius in it.
Thank you for this information. Although I am not the same person you were responding to, I am looking for the same set of (great)grandparents. My husband's father was Frederick Vansant Comegys, named by his father (Oscar Comegys)for Oscar's cousin, Frederick Vansant, whom Oscar lived with when he moved from Galena to Wilmington in 1900. Oscar's parents were Gorgianna Vansant and John Comegys. I know that Oscar had one brother, John, but did not know he had more siblings until I just read the July, 2000 post you responded to. I will plan a trip to see if who we can find in the cemetaries you mention. Thank you again! P.S. If the previous post's owner, Roxanne, gets this response, I would certainly appreciate getting in touch with you too.

I realize this post is 12 years old, but I think I have some info for you. I lived in Sassafras when I was small. My great grandmother, Arabelle Price Robinson, who lived to be 96, was interviewed in 1978 for an article about Sassafras. In the article there was an 1877 map of Sassafras where you can see a home owned by Comegys and another home owned by J.D.Vanzant. This map can be found on the Kent County Historical Society website at http://www.kentcountyhistory.org/maps.php

I believe also that I can help you locate the cemetery that you're looking for on the map. There is one cemetery marked that goes with the St. Johns Methodist Church, but there is also a second cemetery next to it, that I know to be there, that is not on the map. If you look at the map, the cemetery should be on the unmarked lot behind the Rehobeth M E Church. I believe it may even be a part of the Vanzant lot now as well. This church was torn down at least 10 years ago. I don't know if the cemetery has ever been mapped. This may help you with your search, especially if you have an opportunity to go to Sassafras.

Re: John C Comegys

Well long story short I had a feeling it was John C. Comegys after seeing the census for 1910 in Church Hill, Queen Ann, MD. Both Lula and he were listed as MARRIED for the same number of years, but put out for work and living in other peoples homes. My mother had sent away to the Maryland archives to see what they could find. She sent them info on my "hunch". It paid out! We have a copy of a couple documents including their marriage. I haven't figured how to scan these documents just yet (they sent gigantic copies) but when I do I will forward you what I know.

In that year I did find Helen Comegys living with her aunt Laura Long (the census has it written "Lang"), but I have been unable to find Ethel. She would have been an infant at this time. My grandmother (Catherine Starkey) does remember visiting with her 1/2 sisters from time to time, so I know she wasn't adopted out with a name change.

I had also suspected a divorce, but no record was found. Lula died just a few years after marrying Issac Starkey so it is possible that he (John C) had Tuberculosis as she did and they didnt have the financial means to deal with it. The old family story says that Issac Starkey met her (Lula) in an Alms House where he was doing repairs.

Anyway, I will be in touch with what information I have.
Brittany Toft

PS. if you send an e-mail address I can send scans directly.
John C Comegys

I am looking for information about John C Comegys who married My Great Grandmother Lula Alice Jester. They had 2 children Ethel (b.1905) and Helen (b.1909). John died in 1910 or shortly after that. I believe. Lula (Jester) Comegys then married Isaac Starkey and had my Grandmother Catherine Starkey. She often spoke of visiting her 1/2 sisters Helen and Ethel, but I have been unable to find any further information on John C or his daughters. I know that in 1910 Lula and John C were both sent out to work as hired hands in the Church Hill, MD area.

Does anyone have information on John C Comegys or his daughters Ethel or Helen?
Thanks,
Brittany

You may have already found this information.
Yes, Thomas Clark was married to Evelina Mitchell Comegys. She was born Aug 1866 MD. Her parents were John P Comegys and Georgianna Mirchell. I began by reseaching the Vance connection which is the maiden name of my husband's mother.

Evelina Mitchell Comegys m: Thomas Clark MD
They had a daughter Sarah Catherine Clark who married Edwin Stuart Vance.
Edwin Stuart Vance and Evelina had children including Doris May Vance. Doris married Banks Daubert. I just confirmed that Evelina is correct when I recently talked with Doris' sister. I have more information but you may have already acquired it.

If you need more information I will try to help.

Comegys in Champaign Co. OH and Jefferson Co. IA

I'm a bit confused and hoping someone can help. I'm looking for the parents of Cornelius Milton Comegys, b. 1833 in Urbana, Champaign, OH and d. 1911 in Bondurant, Polk, IA. He m. Elizabeth Vaught.

So...the 1850 census for Salem, Champaign, OH shows:
William Comegys, b. 1805 VA + Sarah A. b. 1802 VA
ch: Sarah b. 1828 OH, William b. 1831 OH, Cornelius b. 1834 OH, James b. 1836 OH, and David b. 1838 OH.

Next...the 1856 Iowa Census for Liberty, Jefferson, IA shows:
Jacob Comegys b. 1799 VA + Sarah b. 1801 VA
ch: [1] William H. b. 1828 OH m. Eliza b. 1836 IN, their ch: Mary B. b. 1855 IA; [2] David b. 1837 OH, [3] Daniel R. b. 1841 OH

Seems to be two different families, although there are similarities in names and birth years.

Finally...the 1860 census for Fairfield, Jefferson IA shows:
Jacob Comegys b. 1799 VA + Sarah b. 1795 VA
ch: Sarah b. 1830 OH, Cornelius b. 1835 OH, Daniel b. 1842 OH
the next family listed is:
William Comegys b. 1832 OH + Eliza b. 1836 IN
ch: Mary b. 1855 IA, Presley b. 1858 IA

Did these two families somehow merge? Is it even two different families? Cornelius is first listed in 1850 as a child of William and Sarah, isn't on the 1856 census at all, then shows up again in 1860 as a child of Jacob and Sarah.

Help please!

Valerie Bradshaw

Valerie,

Concerning your message about the Jacob Comegys family in the 1850 and 1860 census. The William married to Sarah in the 1850 OH census is believed to be Jacob. No one knows why he was listed as William.
The William born c 1832 that you mention is Jacob and Sarah's son.

Guy Wallis

We don't really know much about these two sisters.
Their Parents were George Spencer Comegys and his wife Elizabeth Naudian Cockren. [Is that the correct spelling of Naudian?]
George and Elizabeth had, I think 5 children although there appears to be a question here.
1) Helen Spencer Comegys b 1895-1989 unmarried
2) Lydia Ann Comegys 1896-?
3) Natalie Wowell Comegys 1899-1991 m Frank Edward Hedger
4) Lydia Naudin Comegys 1899?-1986 m Francis Ernest Bolton. Is this Lydia actually the same person as Lydia Ann?
5) Mary Elizabeth 1909-1977 m Herbert William McNinch.

The parents and children except for Lydia Ann are all buried at Shrewsbury Church Cemetery in Kent County MD.

WE don't know anything od their descendants.

The person you are looking for is:

Doctor Cornelius George Washington Comegys born 23 Jul 1816 in DE died 10 Feb 1895. Not sure where he died. His parents were Governor [DE] Cornelius Parsons Comegys and Rubamah Marim.

My information is that he lived his adult life in Cincinnati. Prior to entering medicine he was a school teacher, bank teller, businessman and finally a doctor. He received a Medical Degree in Philadelphia in 1848 and practiced there before returning to Cincinnati where he is said to have founded the Miami Medical College.

Yes, We are aware of Lula, her two Comegys children and her re-marriage and her Starkey daughter. What we didn't have information of was the given name of her first husband.

What is you source for his being John C Comegys?

If you will go to; http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=c_comeg...
you will find a likely candidate for the husband. There was nothing in this obituary to link him to Lulu, but their living separately in the 1910 census suggests a divorce.
You might check the Chestertown newspaper for more information. Also the cemetery and Kent County probate records.

COMEGYS Elaine E. - Antioch College

Longtime Yellow Springs, Ohio village resident Elaine E. Comegys died Nov. 22, Thanksgiving Day,2007 at her home. She had fallen asleep after reading the latest Harry Potter book.

Elaine was born August 8 in a year she would not divulge, in Charleston, West Virginia, to Dr. James P. Solomon and Dr. Effie O. Ellis, and she was raised by Arthur Ellis. Elaine worked for years at Antioch College in the co-op department and finally served as dean of students.

She is survived by her daughter, Danielle Comegys-Pelligrino, and son, Marco Solomon Comegys, and all the beautiful spirits in the world, happy and sad.

A spiritual ceremony in her memory will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007 at 2 p.m., in the Glen Helen Building. If you can’t be there, let yourself whisper into the wind and she will know you loved her.

Natalie Comegys

Today my mother-in-law was talking about being at her sisters christening and her mother (Lydia Comegys) had a sister (Natalie Comegys) who was from NY and she was quite the society lady and arrived in her furs and very jeweled. Not much else was known or said about Natalie. My MIL doesn't remember much more than this about Natalie though. Does anyone know of her marriage or descendants?

My descendants are:
Nathaniel Comegys & Helen
George Comegys & Elizabeth Cochran
Lydia Comegys & Frank Bolton
Janet Bolton & Theodore Bacharach
Ellen Bacharach & Harold Armstrong
Gardner Armstrong & Valarie Jasper ...

My search began for names for my daughter but its turned into a passion instead and she's now 4mo old.

So sorry for not responding sooner!

This is my mother-in-laws great aunts (I believe). My MIL said she remembers being at her sister's christening and her grandmother (Lydia Naudain Comegy) had her sister arrive and she remembers her being very "High Society" and having a lot of jewels, etc. That was Natalie she was speaking of. My MIL also shared that was the impression she had and she was a very young girl when she met her. She did say, she didn't remember seeing her again after the christening.

According to grandpa and my MIL, only 4 girls:

Lydia Naudain Comegys
Natalie Worrel Comegys
Helene Spencer Comegys
Mary Elizabeth Comegys

My MIL also shared they used to spend a lot of time at the Spencer Farm and they were cousins. In the family tree I've set up from asking questions from my MIL and her father, it has a branch that's related to the Spencers, another branch which is related to the Worrel's and another branch which is related to the Naudain's.

I don't know who Lydia Ann Comegy's is. I show it as Cochran. I show Naudain as in this spelling.

I know Lydia had 2 daughters: Francis & Janet Elizabeth. Aunt Fran is around to ask questions but Grandma Jan passed in Nov 2004. Jan had 3 daughters, one is my MIL Ellen the other two are Aunt Wendy and Aunt Susan. Each had 2 children.

I think Natalie had one daughter but I'm not positive on that and I think her name is Catherin, I think.

I remember my MIL correcting me that it's not Helen but Helene with an "E" at the end.

I've listened to the stories my MIL has shared about her family, both sides.

I hope that helps. I didn't know the husband for Mary Elizabeth and my MIL did know that Helene died not that long ago. She remembers the funeral or remembers being notified of the funeral.

Regards,

Valarie Armstrong
val-armstrong@hotmail.com

It is a pleasure to contact other member of the family; We are decendant form Jaboc Esq Baker and Hannath Smith too, the brother of Catherine Baker, John W. Baker went to Trinidad Cuba and changed his family name to Bequer(looking for a similar pronuntiation). My father organized our family tree. I have a translation of a letter of Mr. C. Comegys relating that he married the sister of John Willimas and that he had the documents of the family
I am looking for information about Jacob Esq Baker and Hannath Smith. Do yu have any information about them?.
My father said that Jacob came from Ireland but other members of the family talked about England. About Hannath I found some information in Internet, aditionally I found that there is a bunder of papers of the Smith family in the PHS related to Comegys-Baker " 1725
Smyth family. Papers, 1785-1897.
(1,000 items.)
Correspondence and legal papers on the estate of Jacob Baker, his son-in-law John William Baker, who lived in Cuba, and son-in-law Cornelius Comegys. The responsibility for the estates all eventually devolved to Isaac S. Smyth, Comegys' son-in-law. (John W. Baker's estate was particularly confused by the claims of illegitimate children. There is some family and other personal correspondence, including letters, 1816-1855 of John W. Baker to his sister Catherine Comegys, and business papers of Cornelius Comegys.
Purchased, 1955
Apreciating your comments.
Best regards
Manuel Bequer

I now agree, only four children. In the 1900 census Lydia Naudain was called Lydia Ann.

Note to Manuel: Y-DNA-67 testing by FamilyTreeDNA.com would be a good way to learn more about your Baker (Bequer) heritage! It is possible that the entire male line in our part of the Baker (Bequer) family is in Cuba. In his 1818 Will, Jacob Baker mentions only two children, your ancestor John William Baker (changed to Bequer after he moved to Cuba) and his sister, my great great great great grandmother Catherine Baker Comegys. The name Baker is very common in English-speaking countries. Therefore, DNA testing may be the only way to learn more about our Baker ancestry. There are more than 500 people in the Baker family group of familytreedna.com

Here is information on the Internet about the Will of Jacob Baker:

"BAKER, JACOB. Philadelphia. Esq. November 6, 1818. July 6, 1820. 7.165. Friends: Caleb North, Dr. Thomas Sargent, both of said city, in trust for my daughter: Catharine Comegys, wife of Cornelius Comegys, half of my messuage and ground in Philadelphia adjoining land some time in possession of Thomas Smith, ground late of Thomas and Sarah Moore
and of Thomas Leiper. Also my messuage and lot adjoining land, granted by Samuel Emlen to Elizabeth Smith. the other half of said property to son: John W. Baker. Letters to Catharine Comegys. Exec: Daughter: Catharine Comegys. Son: John W. Baker. Witnesses: John P. Little, Peter Thomson."

http://swoodbridge.com/Genealogy/Wills/Baker-PA-Wills.txt

Also, there is on the internet a photograph of a home--still standing today--that once was owned by Cornelius Comegys and Catherine Baker Comegys in about 1804. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~comegys/bi...
