I am researching The KY and TX Coleman's and have found several gaps or things that do not make sense. For instance, I've seen different wives listed on the census documents but same husband and same children.
I'm wondering if anyone knows about this line of Coleman's and if there was any Indian or African American relatives. My great grandmother has 3 different names and her family has two last names. I've been told my whole life that she was full blooded Indian. I've always been told that her name was Martha A. Chestnut, she's also listed as Torney Chutney Chesney and Tomey Martha Chesney. Her sister is Lavinda Flynt Chesney, however their actual birth last name is Wofford, sometimes spelled Woford and Wolford. She was married to David Crockett Coleman but there is no record that I can find of a marriage license.
So I'm wondering if there was adopting or something else going on in this particular time.
Also, does anyone know anything about any dealings this Coleman line had with slaves?
Any info will help! Thank you
