Hi John,
Many thanks for your reply. She and Alfred are my paternal grandparents who both died before I was born so my only source of knowledge of them was via my Father. He told me that Kezia was Jewish but this is something I have not been able to research. Do you happen to have any advice on where to start on this please?
Regards
Mike

William Coldwell/Coaldwell (b 1695 southern England, d 1802 Horton (Kings) Nova Scotia) is my ancestor. Wife was Jane Jordan (1717-1796). They were married about 1733 in Stoughton, Massachusetts. They are buried in Gaspareau Cemetery, Gaspareau (Kings) Nova Scotia. The family lived in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. They had 10 children. The family moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut about 1745, then to Nova Scotia about 1758 except for my ancestor, Ebenezer Coldwell/Caldwell, who stayed in Massachusetts because of disagreement with his father's political leanings (Loyalist). I have not seen DNA results for anyone in this family. Unfortunately, my family "daughtered" out long ago, so no direct male descendent in my line to test. I have much information on this family.

Horton, Nova Scotia, Nov 2, 1802

William Coldwell died at this place October 28, 1802, in the 108th year of his age. He was a native of England, and remembered the coronation of Queen Anne. He served in the British Navy upward of ninety years ago; afterwards he became a settler in New England, and was one of the first adventurers on the Isle of Sable for the relief of the distressed castaway there. He was one of the first settlers here in 1760. He left behind him a numerous progeny, upward of one hundred of which, to the degree of great-grandchildren, reside in this place. He generally retained his health and bodily strength to that degree that he could cut wood and walk to his neighbors without a staff till last year, and till his death retained all his mental faculties to a surprising degree, and, as he lived the life of a Christian, so at death he testified his confidence in a blissful immortality.

Brian

There is a further complication with Scotland. There is an entirely separate family originating in Flintshire named Caldwell which occasionally gets mixed up with the English Coldwell familiy and I assume also possibly with Coldwells. One way to possibly sort this out would be by DNA testing of male Y chromosome. I have a project with FTDNA aiming to do just that. It would be interesting to see if we are closely related or quite different families. See https://www.familytreedna.com/login.aspx

Are linked to the Coldwell family of Nova Scotia?

Regards John

Thanks for your thoughts John, this could be an explanation, however I am also curious about the existence of a town and a burrough near Aberdeen in Scotland that are both named "Coldwells". Out of curiosity, I tried to communicate with a cousin who is attached (capacity unknown) to a university there without any success. So the quandary continues on my end. When I have more time I will try to come back to this and see whether the names you have quoted indeed appear anywhere in an old hand-drawn family tree that has been handed down to me.

Regards,
Brian

Hi Brian

Interesting. I had not thought of that problem.

I am doing a one-name study of Coldwell see www.coldwell-roots.co.uk

I believe that Coldwells could be a variant of Coldwell. At some point a Coldwell child may have got named Coldwells.

It may have started with JOSEPH COLDWELL Birth: 14 APR 1801 Christening: 10 MAY 1801 Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London, Father: JOHN COLDWELL Mother: ANN
Will (Coldwells)
of 7 Sanford Lane Stoke Newington Middlesex gardener died 27 Apr 1873
Proved Principal Registry by John Coldwells of 5 Bridge Place Stamford Hill builder the son the sole executor. Effects under £1000
Buried Abney Park Cemetery

I would appreciate if you could add anything to this? Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards John Coldwell johnkcoldwell@gmail.com

Not to be confused with Caldwell, Coldwell or Couldwell, the multiplicity of these names should have an apostrophe before the 's'. Commonly we see Coldwells when referring to Coldwell families - the distinction should be made by using Coldwell's so as not to confuse us who are Coldwells'!

My full name is Albert Brian Coldwells, born in 1940 in England and emigrated to Canada in 1943. i find the search for my relatives on Ancestry is complicated by this common misuse of the manner of reference to multiple families.

I am looking for information on my 2nd great-grandfather. He was married to Susan Spradling/Spradlin in Knox County, Tennessee in 1847. They resided in Miser Station, Friendsville, Tennessee. They made trips between there and North Carolina. My great-grandfather was born in North Carolina but resided in Miser Station. I believe there may be ties to the Underground Railroad and the Quaker Community as far as I can tell. My 2nd great was not in either Union or Confederate Army during the war. I find this unusual given the time and location of their homestead. Any info that would shed light would be greatly appreciated. I cannot find any records before a marriage certificate in 1847,
Etta Davis Whaley

Well, I had a few names already from Ken and was able to find some other researchers that listed Chares Coldwell, from England but I didn't know where in England. I finally found a Hockenberry researcher that looks very thorough as it has info that must be from death certs, etc. He listed Charles as born in Netherthong, Yorkshire, England. So I went on google and did search under Netherthong and Coldwell and your message with the 1841 and 1851 census showed up.
Would be interested in your pictures and other info and I just started this for my brother in law and don't have any documentation except from ancestry.com.
My brother in law was born in Altoona in 1946 and now lives in the Baltimore MD area.
Thank you
Karen McGrady
knsm4@comcast.net

I'm sure we have the same Charles Samuel Coldwell. Your William H is brother to my Laura Isabel 1873. I think I have a picture of your Charles 1897 and his brother Freeman as children. I have a pic of Charles 1844 and Emma, too.

Charles' obit says he was "born at Thong's Bridge, near Uderfield England, on Dec 14, 1844." That's a typo.. it's Huddersfield. Do you have the obit? His death cert says father Samuel Coldwell, mother Martha Wood. I went to England in 2004 and found Thongbridge, near Holmfirth. I got some English census/baptism booklets which you see posted in three messages here.

1841, Martha, 25 (prior to Charles' birth)
Sarah 50 and Joseph 56.

1851: Charles son age 12 (an age mistake I think)
Martha, daughter, age 36
Sarah Coldwell, head, widow age 60

1861: Charles son 20 unmarried
Martha daughter 45 unmarried
Sarah head 70 widow

Martha is unmarried again in 1871 and 1881. So what's up with that? Was she a Coldwell all along and never a Wood? There's no mention of Samuel anywhere. Her death cert says "daughter of Joseph Coldwell". Though I do find a Martha born to Joseph Wood in 1816 in the area. It's a mystery! I'm happy to share copies of what I have.
There was another child for The Rev. William Coaldwell (
Immigrant) and Jane Jordan, one Jonathan Coldwell b. 1746 Fairfield, Connecticut - d. 1843 Gaspereau, Nova Scotia. Jonathan married Rosannah/Susanna Pyke. Jonathan & Rosannah had a daughter, Waittie\Waity Coldwell who married William O'Leary. Please advise if you require any more descendants. As for ancestors, I have only bare bones for Rev. William's mother, Mary Edwards, but his father, William Coldwell Jr. goes back into a very rich ancestry with over 10,005 names. The Rev. William supposedly is my 12th cousin 7 times removed.

Best regards.

I see that the silver box was up for sale at Tenants Auction, Yorkshire, in July 2011. It was described as:
A Victorian Snuff Box, William Summers, London 1865, of rectangular form with incurved corners, engraved throughout with panels of leaves within strapwork, presentation inscribed .... to Bugle Major Caldwell By the Officers of the Leeds Rifles ... 10 Dec 1880, 7cm long, 3oz 15dwt.
The name is mis-spelt with an a instead of an o but that is a common mistake. Nicholas Coldwell was living in Leeds at the time and he was a Bugle Major so the box was definitly for him.
Re the photograph. It could be Nicholas Coldwell but I would like to know its provenance. Do you have any more details? I would appreciate a copy.
Regards
John
john.coldwell@btinternet.com

Hi Bernard
I think you are correct. He was a drum major in Leeds in 1861. He retired before 1871 so I guess the silver box is dated around that time. Can you tell the date from the silver mark?
Regards
John
www.coldwell-roots.co.uk

The variations in spelling of Coldwell (Colwell, Caldwell, Couldwell etc.) is common. It is particularly confusing because Colwell and Caldwell are surnames in their own right with different origins from Coldwell. See my web site www.coldwell-roots.co.uk

I may be able to help with finding your family as I now have 12,000 Coldwell names (not all on my web site yet). Can you tell me where Hettie and William where married? Did the family originate in England or perhaps Canada, Nova Scotia?

William N Carroll was my husbands great grand dad. We have the name COLWELL for Hettie in a family bible. However, we have seen it as coldwell, and caldwell. Father: Edward Caldwell and Mother Henrietta R H Caldwell. William and Hettie's children:
Paul S Carroll
Margaret Carroll
Claudie A Carroll
Kirby W Carroll
Esther Juanita Carroll.
The fathers name was taken from Ancestry, not the family Bible. jt
