John Colahan (Coolahan) married Ellen Flattery around 1839 in Clontuskert Parish, County Galway. They left Ireland around 1840, and settled in Schuylkill County in Pennsylvania. I would like to contact others who are researching the Colahan and Flattery families.

I have a Margaret Colahan (Coolahan) in my family tree. Born abt. 12820-21 in Lawrencetown, Co.Galway. I don't know the parish. Her parents - John Colahan, Farmer, and Hessy (Esther) Hughes. She married a Peter Egan in Lawrencetown and they came to Australia in 1838. Please advise if you think she may be related to your John Colahan.

According to the Woodford Heritage Centre, there are over 350 baptismal entries for the Colahan/Colohan surname in the Ballinasloe/Portumna area, with the greatest concentration in the catholic parishes of Ballinasloe (Kilclooney), Clontuskert, and Laurencetown (Kiltormer).
There is no record of the birth of my ancestor John Colahan (pronounced Coolahan) who was born around 1817. However, the baptism of his first child, John Colahan, was recorded in Clontuskert parish in 1840. John Colahan and Ellen Flattery left the infant with grandparents and emigrated to Schuylkill County in Pennsylvania, which was a magnet for many other Colahans in the 1840s and 1850s.
At this point, I have little information on the family in Ireland although it appears that John had a brother Patrick (born around 1815) who married Bridget Kenny. Patrick and Bridget had a daughter Margaret born around 1838.
In looking at the baptisms for Clontuskert parish, I noticed an 1840 record for Michael Egan son of Peter Egan and Maria Coolahan.

I just rang in to the Colahan message page and found your message regarding John Colahan. I am trying to find the parents of and Irish birthplace of my ggrandfather, Thomas Colahan. He was born "in Ireland" on 15 Oct 1831. He came to the USA around 1836, to Schuykill Co. PA, where he married Mary Reilly, also born in Ireland. I thought the similarities could be related. I do not have names of his siblings. Can you help? Thanks, Kate

Can you provide additional information? Thomas' middle initial if any. The name(s) of his children. Where he lived in Schuylkill County. His date of death. This will help me check my records. Patrick, Allentown,PA.

Think Thomas' middle initial is "C". His children were Thomas Edward 1861; Ann 1864; Martin 1867; Mary 1869; John 1876; James 1878; and George 1883. He served in the PA
L Reg. 5th Art and the PA G Reg. 6th Inf. He moved to MN At the end of the Civil War. Date of death abt 1904.
Married in Harrisburg PA to Mary Reilly in 1859.
Thanks, Patrick! Katherine in CA

Schuylkill County records show that the earliest Colahan declarations of intent for citizenship were Edward in March 1833, and Thomas in July 1839. Edward's son Thomas was born around 1831 and died in 1885. He served in the 96 PA INF "I" Company. If you are correct about your Thomas immigrating in 1836 as a child, then it may be worth researching whether he was the son of Thomas who declared for citizenship in 1839. There was a history of Schuylkill County published in the 1840s by Israel Rupp which listed Edward Colahan Esq. of Port Carbon and Thomas Colahan Esq. of Bellmont as subscribers. The 1850 Census could establish whether this Thomas had a son Thomas born in 1831, and also identify the name of his wife, and the names of other children. My notes show that there was a Thomas Colahan baptized January 8, 1832 in Clontuskert Parish. His parents were Thomas Colahan and Maria Lynch. It would be worthwhile checking the microfilmed record to see if it lists the date of birth.

Bellmont is in East Norwegian Township. I have found the Census Index to be unreliable. It may be best to do a search of all households in the township, or consider all of the possible spelling variations for Colahan (including Callahan which appears in Schuylkill County records).
