My ggg-grandmother is Mary (Polly) Coile. The information I have is that she was the daughter of James and Nancy Coile of SC.
She was born about 1798 and married James Paul about 1818 in SC. The Paul family was living in Madison County Georgia in 1830 and 1840 census, and in Oglethorpe County in the 1850-1870 census. Polly and James had six children.

Any information about Mary Coile and her ancestors would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is going to help or just muddle things up, but here goes:

Over the last few years of working on this, I've come across James and Nancy Coile and wondered if they might be the parents of my ggg-grandfather, James Coile, born in NC in 1800, but later moved to Oglethorpe County, GA (which is next door to Madison County - my father was born in Comer, Madison County, but lives just a couple of miles over the county line in Oglethorpe).

I've never been successful in finding anything at all about James Coile's ancestors or siblings.

However, just yesterday I found the Coile entries on the A-D section of the 1860 Oglethorpe County census. James and his wife Mary were listed, as were 10 of their 11 children, with the exception being a daughter whose married name was Martin and thus would've been on another section of the census. There were only two Coiles I couldn't identify, a Joseph T. Coile, whose age was given as "8/12", leading me to think it was supposed to be "8-1/2", and a Nancy Coile, aged 90.

Nancy Coile's name jumped out at me because I know that the other Coiles are my family, and yet here was this lone 90-year old woman on the list. This got me wondering if Nancy Coile was the mother of James Coile. The age would be about right, putting her at 30 in 1800.

The reason I mention this is that I wonder if your ggg-grandmother Mary (Polly) was the older sister of my ggg-grandfather James Coile, and if Nancy was the mother of them both.

Do you have any more information about James and Nancy Coile?

Sybil,

Like Debra, I am researching James Coile/Mary Barnett. In my research, I did find burial information for Mary Coile Paul (from findagrave.com):

Birth: 1802
Death: Apr. 11, 1884

Wife of James Paul

Burial:
JAMES (JIMMIE) PAUL
Sandy Cross (Oglethorpe County)
Oglethorpe County
Georgia, USA

There is not a picture of the headstone.

Debra, if these dates are right, she could be the "younger" sister of our James. :)

I also found burial information for a Nancy Coil in the same cemetery:

Birth: 1780
Death: 1870

Burial:
JAMES (JIMMIE) PAUL
Sandy Cross (Oglethorpe County)
Oglethorpe County
Georgia, USA

In the 1850 census, Nancy's age was listed as 70 years old and agrees with the birth date on the headstone. She was included in the household with two Moses Bridwells, one 75 and one 45. I have not found any connection between them.

In the 1860 census, Nancy's age was listed as 90 years old and was included in the household with James, Polly, and Thomas J. Pall (Paul). I'm assuming they are the same Nancy.

If you have any documentation that James and Nancy are Mary (Polly)Coile's parents, that would be very helpful to me.

That's all I have for now.

Tim
